Carbon Hunter Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 (edited) Hi all After a lot of planning, discussion and work by the GoSA team (the organising committee for the 2012 MEGA event in Gauteng) - an event has been published which we trust will make MEGA status in the coming weeks. It is understood that Cape Town (Western Cape) was initially selected as the venue and unfortunately it had to be changed at short notice. KZN took up the reins and I am sure that Cape Town will be back in the frame in the coming years. It is great that after breaking the ice in Gauteng, that South Africa can even consider another MEGA on such a regular basis. We look forward to support from all SA caching community - and hope to have a bumper MEGA event. The venue will be Giba Gorge (basically below the first toll gate as one drives from Durban to Joburg on the N3). Step 1: Please log a WILL ATTEND log on the cache page This will enable SA to apply for and be granted official MEGA status (it makes it easier for all events in the future too). This is not a binding obligation - but just a desire to attend with possible numbers (e.g. one caching account with 2 adults and 2 children - indicate 4 to attend in your log). Thanks and looking forward to the journey together. Edited January 15, 2014 by Carbon Hunter Quote
GEO936 Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 It is wonderful to know that a fantastic MEGA is unfolding in the awesome city of Durban. Just to make it clear, Cape Town are still busy working hard to host the next Mega after this one. We await for a confirmed date in 2015. The CT Planning Committee need to meet at the end of this month, and hopefully we'll have a better idea of where and when the 3rd Mega will take place. CT had some delays with their planning, which was putting the 2014 hosting under pressure. When KZN were keen to host for 2014, it was the logical choice to rather go with KZN for 2014, thus giving CT a chance to continue their planning for the following Mega. We also already have the 4th Mega lined up for 2016!!! That's right - it will be hosted by the Eastern Cape community in PE during the long weekend of 1 May 2016.... PLEASE diarise that one and plan your holidays accordingly. In the meantime please post your Will Attend for a Mega Party in Giba Gorge - 4-6 October 2014!!! Quote
TechnoNut Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 Update 17 January 18h00 There are now 195 "Will Attend" Logs and we are still short of the magic figure required by Groundspeak to upgrade the event to Mega Status. Please - if you have not yet logged, do so ASAP, and also ask your friends to put up a Will Attend Log. Quote
Carbon Hunter Posted January 21, 2014 Author Posted January 21, 2014 We have reached the required milestone for Groundspeak to grant the MEGA status - now we wait for the Admin issues to be finalised and then we can see if the event will get official MEGA status (a formality if the admin things are finalised). Gaining excitement here in the KZN region. Lots of good ideas already flowing. Quote
Wazat Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 (edited) Well done guys... I have already got my first Event lined up and page is ready, unfortunately a normal event only allows 6 months prior to the date of the event or less to be published. I have set this up as Rhino Mega Meeting (Note the name will change once the naming standard changes for the Mega Event) which will be everyone's chance to meet and discover the Cape Union Mart Rhinos currently doing their best to raise awareness for the conservation of Rhinos... Unless Groundspeak allow me a bit of Leeway on the time, keep an eye out for publication in a couple of months. Edited January 24, 2014 by Wazat Quote
Carbon Hunter Posted January 30, 2014 Author Posted January 30, 2014 Well the KZN Cachers gave the official go ahead and elected a core of a committee for the MEGA planning last night (29 January). the MEGA is a go - so watch this space and looking forward to lots of interaction, ideas and most of support from all the caching community. +cincol Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 If there is anything that I could do to assist I would be prepared to throw some weight into the mix as well. Feel free to contact me with requests and I will see what I can contribute. Quote
Carbon Hunter Posted January 31, 2014 Author Posted January 31, 2014 Hi all (especially KZN cachers) - please note there is 3.5 km exclusion zone around the MEGA venue for new cache placement. This is to allow for new dedicated MEGA caches to be placed so that we all have some brand new caches to find (and try and get 9 or 10 icons in a single day) - plus to have some of that uniqueness and excitement for the MEGA event on the day. If you have some ideas or plans - please contact Tarisma (Dave) or Afrika Rocks (Grant) and your plans could well be included into the MEGA. thank you for your understanding. Quote
Carbon Hunter Posted February 4, 2014 Author Posted February 4, 2014 Hi all - I need help please. I am looking for interesting topics for speakers at the next MEGA. In particular, I'm looking at drawing on experience from our caching community. Are there any really interesting cachers out there (or can you point me towards them) that may have something to teach other cachers? Some topics I have thought of: Caching with kids Caching in education / schools / home schooling Caching with disabilities Caching with dogs Extreme caching etc... Any ideas welcomed. Please send me a PM - thanks Quote

Please send me a PM - thanks How long would you envisage these "talks" to be? Would they be formal [lecture room type] or informal? Depending on the specs you require I would be happy to talk about caching in different countries. I have experienced caching in 24 countries and could share some experiences / photos / etc if that would be suitable. Quote
Carbon Hunter Posted June 30, 2014 Author Posted June 30, 2014 Just a bump on the thread - less than 100 days to go now to the MEGA. Are you guys still on track to be there? Also - anyone that is coming that would be interested in helping out for an hour or so around the various activities (manning a table, running a WhatsApp group for notifications, helping at the registrations/arrivals table, etc. ? There are a few jobs looking for hands - so any help would be appreciated. There is certainly excitement building among the organising committee - with clothing designs already finalised, coins ordered etc. Quote

Carbon Hunter Posted October 30, 2014 Author Posted October 30, 2014 Dear MEGA Attendee As a thank you for attending Africa's 2nd and KZN's 1st MEGA event, the organising committee would like to give you a little gift. Below is a link to a book that covers guidelines for placing a new cache in Africa and for urban caching safety in southern Africa. Click here to download the PDF We trust that everybody travelled home safely and we look forward to many more good times caching together. Thanks to all who have given feedback on the MEGA event and for playing your part in making it a successful event. Kind regards, MEGA KZN 2014 Organising Committee info@megakzn.co.za Quote
Carbon Hunter Posted November 7, 2014 Author Posted November 7, 2014 Remember to make you logs - the events are going to be archived shortly. also check your bags to make sure you have all the TBs logged that you have in hand. Quote
Carbon Hunter Posted November 24, 2014 Author Posted November 24, 2014 Great news. The KZN MEGA committee handed over the profits from the MEGA to the KZN Ezemvelo Honarary Officers (Rangers) of the Tembe Elephant Park at an event yesterday. A donation of R15,000 was made on behalf of all involved in the MEGA. This will be used for Elephant related research (contraception program and collaring/tracking were mentioned specifically). The excess funds came after sales of merchandise, donations, registration fees, raffles, sponsors and the tight financial management of our Treasurer. Well done to all involved. +cincol Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 Great to have been able to be part of the MEGA and that in some way I contributed to the handover. WELL DONE to the organizers. Quote
