Carriages / Coaches

Recommended Posts

I just spent some time searching, and I can hardly believe it: Is there no category for static carriages and other horse-drawn vehicles?

I only found the Covered Wagons category, but this is very specific.

Time for a new category?

What are the odds that I would be thinking the same thing when I took some pictures of a Wells Fargo carriage static display in a casino in Reno, NV this past weekend? I was just about to consider writing this topic in the forums and then I saw this pop up. Great minds think alike. B)

I love the idea. Create a Horse-Drawn Carriages group/category and invite me as an officer and this category should fly through the Peer Review process faster than a gun-toting Wells Fargo rider being chased down by outlaws.

Here are my initial thoughts for this category. Please comment if you agree to those points!

1. This category is for animal-drawn vehicles (horse, mule, oxen, dog...)

2. On static display (no active ones)

3. On wheels (carriage, coach, cart, chariot, wagon...) or runners (sleigh)

4. Indoors and outdoors.

5. No covered wagons, they have a dedicated category

6. For transport of goods or persons. (This excludes animal-drawn machinery like mowers or plows that can go to the Agricultural equipment category.) Is there a gap in between? I couldn't find any examples yet.

7. If there are more than one vehicle at the same location, combine them into one waymark. It's not about every single carriage, but more about places, where you can find some. A carriage museum is one waymark; I don't like power trails.

Group name: "the Coachmen"? Other ideas?

I've always considered drays as old ag equipment but, having said that, never submitted one to the Old Ag Equipment category. Had I done so assume would have been denied. I haven't submitted any to Old Ag Equip so one of many to remember. Drays in Oz are popular front garden ornaments. They were used in agriculture and forestry & drawn by oxen. Now-a-days they are in a poor state of repair which adds to the appeal. Drays in general had no coachmen but were under the control of a bullocky who walked beside the oxen using calls & his whip to guide them.

Have also seen the occasional coach of the Cobb & Co. variety in museums or parks.

An interesting idea which will have my support. (Edited to change font)

Due to limited resources this took longer than I expected, but finally I have compiled a first draft:

It appears you have one waymark for a collection such as in a museum. What about a situation such as Old Alabama Town in Montgomery, Alabama, where buildings have been moved to a site? For example, there is a working area with a wagon for hauling cotton and a residence area with a carriage house with a carriage.

Excellent writeup, fi67! I fixed a few grammar errors and cleaned up the wording a little bit to make a few sentences easier to read. I also changed the category name and replaced 'Static' with 'Permanent' since you used the word numerous times in your long description. I think it sounds better. I can't wait to see this go to Peer Review!

Do you think a couple of photos imbedded in the long description describing what we're aiming for in submissions would be good or do you think the majority of Waymarkers will figure it out?

I also don't like the idea of grouping multiple static displays into one waymark. For instance, if numerous carriages/coaches are found in a museum, each static display could tell its own story/history. By forcing numerous displays into one waymark would not give a specific carriage/coach display its own personal story to share with the world.

Seems fine. There is a similar display to that mentioned by xptwo at Jondaryan in Queensland with relocated structures based around an old woolshed. It's described by the owners as a museum village. Some carriages are on permanent display, others still in use. Documantation is spelt documentation.

Thank you for your thoughts on this!

I will add some pictures once the text is fine.

Regarding the marker texts: adding the text to the description would make the marker text available for web research, often these description are not available anywhere else in a accessible format; but maybe you are right, sometimes it can be lengthy and does not really add to the overall quality of a waymark. I will soften the requirement to a recommendation.

Combining objects into one waymark: Recently, there have been more power trails than there used to be a while ago. They are not really interesting for anyone, except if you are mainly in it for the numbers. If you allow dozens or hundreds of waymarks in the same building, this is going to happen, and they would not spend a lot more time on all these submissions than they would on a combined submission for the whole site. It is true, every single item in a carriage museum would have a story to tell, but nobody is going to do the detailed research for that, when standing in front of a whole bunch of wagons; and no visitor is ever going to read every detailed description when visiting a site with dozens of waymarks of the same category. So I see this argument as valid, but very hypothetical. Someone might add great stories and valuable information for individual objects, but in real life this would not be going to happen. The site restriction will have a positive impact on the quality of the category as a whole, I am sure.

But I did not think about those museum villages, we some around here as well. In a very spacious area it makes sense to allow several entries, because they are not as closely related as in an indoor museum. I am looking for a clear wording to define the limits. Any help?

One possibility would be to put a limit on how many one waymarker may post at a given museum or complex. For example, the Woodmen of the World category limits each poster to four markers in a given cemetery.

First, this is a wonderful category concept! Kudos for following up on this.

The category as written is well thought out and covers most of the essential points.

The policy on Waymarking a museum or other concentration of qualifying objects is well-taken, and is consistent with most other categories where these situations exist. Museum categories don't allow for Waymarking each individual display, even though they each may have a story to tell. (The exception may be sculpture gardens, but that is different from a museum.) Would we waymark every train in a train museum? The provision for areas where the objects are spread out gives some flexibility. Even a single waymark can do justice to a group. Just put in a little more effort - more photos, more detailed description! Seems simple enough to me.

When it comes to markers and plaques, I would lean toward including the text more of a requirement, or at least a stronger request. There can be some flexibility if the markers are extremely long. Sure, once again, it takes more time and effort to do this, but the results are worthwhile. As you mentioned, this may be the only place this information exists on line. This is one of the valuable contributions that Waymarking can make!

It will be nice to see this category on the grid!!

Will this category have a more appropriate icon at some stage?

Don't worry - just had a look at the Group Details page & a logo hasn't been selected so ............................will await with anticipation the final design. A pug nosed Vee Dub just doesn't cut it.

Congratulations! I'll try to create on the next weeks, but I'm totally okay if some other Waymarkers would create one.

Thanks! My first car was a 1971 VW super bug (1600cc motor) so could see some resemblance to it.
