Would you go out on a night like this?

Recommended Posts

Ya gotta go for the smiley and calendar date filling, no question. Bundle up like you're the kid from 'The Christmas Story", you know, so you can hardly move your arms :) and go for it.

I've only got 2 days remaining and my calendar will be filled, and all before Tundra Tim, the leading geo cacher in Alaska. You can bet he's gunna hear about it.......more than once :)

LOL! Oh, the classic battle. While we were in the middle of our streak, my husband and I would have this exact discussion on many a stormy day/night. Often we would agree that we should let it go and stay cozy and warm...only to find ourselves feeling the opposite in a few hours and bundling up to head out for the smiley. That's the cool thing about this game - YOU get to place the value on the smiley and choose to go for it or let it go. :) It does make for a fun story to share at the next event.

After a big ice storm, the power was out at home so we thought we'd go out and have some fun. Here's a fun memory of cracking open the ice coated ground with a boot (the only thing we had in the car to use) to get to a frozen over geocache. Yep, the smile on my face says, "I can't believe we are doing this". :P

It's dark, raining and blowing a gale. And I have a gap in my calendar for today... What to do?

Should I brave the elements and go for the smiley or should I stay warm and dry, and crack open a beer (Hobgoblin, of course)?

Caching or Hobgoblin. Whatever the weather I suspect the beer would win.

Of course you could just find a cache tomorrow and sign/log it with today's date. Or wait until next year. Personally I think going out in nasty conditions just to tick a box is silly, but then it was 9 years before I filled my calendar and probably three years from the point I thought it might be a cool thing to attempt.

Do both.. why not right?

Yes - right answer! Mrs HGKF put on her cheesy Christmas CD and the rain had eased so there were two good reasons for getting out of the house. My daughter accompanied me and together we found our nearest unfound cache. It was a balmy 10 degrees (Celsius) so not so bad after all. Now celebrating with a bottle of the magic potion :D

Maybe a quick, easy, nearby, lamppost cache-n-dash and then a warm evening at home?

It's always easier to cache (or whatever activity you like) in "poor" weather, then it is to think about caching in "poor" weather. We do a lot of biking, when we are out and the rain starts we just put on rain gear and continue, BUT if we're sitting in a nice warm house, watching the rain it's so much harder to go out and get on the bike.

Who's in charge - you, or the calendar?

I told the calendar to take a hike years ago. There are times of the year when I just have better things to do. Sometimes I visit places that have no caches. Oh, and my longest streak is 10 days. And I'm loving the game because it's on MY terms.

*This* is exactly how I feel...

I would go get it but that is just how I am. We are working on a streak....however if we lived in a place that snowed and was very cold for a long period of time I don't think we would be doing a crazy long streak. It never snows here or gets to cold during the day. I am sure a week or so of that and the streak would be broken for sure.

I can top that! Longest streak 8 days, it was apparently in 2007, and I wasn't even trying, it just happened. :P

HOWEVER, as a 10+ year cacher, when Groundspeak first put out their own statistics, I noticed that I was also "without trying" at about 330 of the 365 Calendar days. I absolutely went out of my way to fill the calendar, and qualify for the many challenge caches all over the planet. Although I've only found the local one, that I can think of. Yes, I probably would have braved the rain last night, and had the beer after I got home. :)

I like the rain. Blowing gales? Not so much.

I haven't paid much attention to how many slots I've filled on the Groundspeak calendar. It just never seemed that important to me. My social calendar, on the other hand, is pretty important. My sister and I both have pretty quirky work schedules, so it's not uncommon for us to set up engagements months in advance, to coincide with days which we both have off. One year we decided to do a night paddle in Tampa Bay. Tropical Storm Barry decided to hit Tampa Bay that same night. Of course we still paddled. And, I found a cache on an island. The visibility, due to the sideways rain and choppy surf, was very poor. I could read my GPS, and we could barely make out each others navigation lights.

Since we survived, we decided it was an adventure.

I actually enjoy kayaking in the rain and have done it many times. It's the wind that can some times make it a lot less enjoyable, although I was giving a lesson one time to a couple of people in a protected inlet as a summer thunderstorm with lots of rain and wind hit. I used it as a learning experience to practice self and assisted rescues in the kind of conditions that would most likely cause a capsize in the first place and to demonstrate what can happen to to a kayak if you don't keep in contact with it at all times after a capsize (it can get blown across the water faster than any human can swim).

Oh, if were that simple...

I could go months without caching and often do.

- But I have another 2/3rds who says otherwise.

Can't tell you how many times I've been out in inclement weather over that calendar thing on days that have to be filled and she's working.

Now she wants to fill in the D/T grid.

- But it beats all the other chores I could get stuck with on the honeydo list, I guess. :)

Yeah, I know what you mean. It's only a game, but a local cacher has set a challenge cache and I looked at my geocaching.com calendar where I saw that it was fairly full. Then I made a note of the empty squares and they have been taunting me ever since! I have December filled apart from Christmas Day and Boxing Day and Mrs HGKF even suggested going for a walk (!). January has 11 gaps and my nearest caches are getting further and further away...

OMG this game can get soooooo stressful :)

All the little games with in the game, How funny. I've been out in weather I had no business being out in (nor any other creature), just to complete or continue some accomplishment with this game :) You'd have to be half crazy, but I'm OK with that.

I can't believe some of the streaks people achieve, The 31 days of August was pushing it for me, but I was crazy enough to do it :)

I hear 'ya. I am soon to reach my 10th year in a row without looking for a cache on Christmas Day.

I don't think I've found a cache on Christmas day either, but I have found a few on New Years Day. It's actually a really good day to go caching, especially early, as a lot of muggles are "sleeping in".

my most productive day is new Years Day. It's become my tradition of mine. An early event, then off for some caching around a new area, no matter the weather. In fact one year the Event hosted by cavyguy(GC390FE), out in Wasilla, was -20 and that's not the wind chill, and it was blowing. The photo on the cache page tells it all.

Gotcha beat,, I've been caching since early 2002 and since then, my best streakiness holds at 7. What can i say, my caching self esteem is shot... :(:laughing:

To answer the OP,, not for just a find. Now, if the cache i was looking at hadn't been found yet,, OH YEA!

One thing's for sure, this low number severely limits our chances of winning the coveted "Geocacher of the Year" award.

Going off on a slight tangent here.

A cacher we know decided to stay home on a dark and stormy night a couple years back. She still had many dates to fill and wasn't concerned that night about filling in that one. Some time later she got obsessed with completing the calendar and mentioned in a cache log regrets about missing that date. Did her a surprise favor by placing a cache nearly across the street from her house with publication held until that missing date. Figured that no matter how bad the weather she could finish filling her calendar on that day.

Well done hobgoblinkiteflier!

The obvious answer is do if it is fun. If filling in the calendar is fun then it is worth it.

As I am close to filling in my calendar, and a friend has set a bunch of calendar based challengs, I would go out and get it.

Tomorrow is a day I need in my calendar, and it is forecast to be wet and windy. So I'll go for a cache which doesn't require too long of a walk.

I made the effort to finish filling in the calendar days with the last ones to fill in this past October. It really started to feel like a job and I wasn't enjoying it as much. Now, i go out when I want and find as many or as few as I want to. My longest find streak is only 14 days and it probably won't ever get any longer.

We were on a streak and a major snow storm was forecast.

So the evening before the storm we went to the casino. I started winning and didn't want to leave, but MA pulled me away from the machine after midnight, and we went out in the woods with our flashlights and found a cache. The storm started at 3 am and was so bad we couldn't leave the house that day.

19 of my remaining 25 are between now and 22 Feb ... then 29 Feb, and 5 in May or August. Some of those 19, especially weekdays, might slip until 2015 or 2016. Target is to celebrate leap year with 366.

That said I went out for 2 (1.2km walk) in a gale this lunchtime so who knows.

The cache-and-beer option is the wisest post on this thread, by the way.

My longest streak is 4 days but otherwise I have the same mindset. I really enjoy geocaching but refuse to make it a chore.

The only thing in life more important then a cache-a-day is family (and you can always drag them, kicking and screaming, along). The harder it is raining or snowing, the more the fun the adventure. IF I make it to a nice older age, I want to tell my grandkids about my many adventures in life. Not that I was intimidated by a little bit of water or cold.
