My first EarthCache

Recommended Posts

I just submitted my first EarthCache for review last week.

I have been wanting to do one for awhile but was trying to find the right place. I was very surprised this area didn't have one so I am pretty excited about having an EarthCache at it. In fact I am think about another one near by.

What is the typical time frame for having one reviewed?

I sent mine in last week and have not heard back anything. I would have expected at least an email saying they were starting to review it. O-well I hope the review process goes smooth.

Good luck, lmao! The review process for earth caches can take a bit longer than regular caches. Don't worry though, they will get back to you. Be prepared to make changes. Best of luck.

Hello there, farrtom, and thanks for putting together your first earthcaches. I checked your status since I was worried when you said you hadn't heard anything. You should receive a system-generated email acknowledging receipt of any new cache submission once it's enabled for review.

You have one earthcache properly submitted for review on October 31, and another that hasn't been submitted yet. I see you are off to a great start, with excellent documentation of your permission conversations with each land manager.

Since earthcaches are far more complicated to review, and those reviews are done by a very small group of trained specialist reviewers, the normal expectations for review turnaround are quite different than, say, a typical geocache hide in a shopping center parking lot. Delays of a week or more are quite common.

The answer to that is, "good things are worth waiting for!"

Farrtom, like Keystone said, it's a complicated process done by a small group to review an earthcache. I've created three earthcaches and each one was a different time frame when it came to reviewing. I'm sure it also depends on what's in the queue at the time you submit.

My first earthcache was published only two days after submission with the two subsequent ones taking one to two weeks. Keep up the good work though and continue to create earthcaches! You're on your way to being an earthcache master!

I heard back from the reviewer today with some minor suggestions on changes they would like to see. I have made them already and hopefully they will be happy and publish it.

I am a big fan of EarthCaches, and have finally submitted my first. I e-mailed the reviewer with my thoughts, and the Park Commission as well. Received responses with suggestions quickly from both. Researched the site Saturday. Worked on the page Sunday. Sent to the park commission and reviewer on Monday. Received historical and park service suggestions from the park commission on Tuesday. Reworked the page on Tuesday, resubmitted on Tuesday. Received permission on Wednesday. Submitted the cache for review on Wednesday. It was published on Wednesday. (No finds yet!)

I am very impressed with both the reviewer and the county park service! It was a pleasure to work with both!

A friend was working on one in a state park. The head ranger is a geocacher, but was unwilling to commit to approving the EarthCache. Did not answer mail or e-mail. A shame. That was an interesting concept.

So it was pleasure to work with the county park service, which worked quickly, and with good suggestions. Thanks, county park service!

I am still waiting to hear back from my reviewer on the changes that were made after the initial review comments were sent to me. It has now been over two weeks since I submitted the changes for approval.

Did you also post a new Reviewer Note to let him know the changes were made? And perhaps even send an email to the Reviewer's caching ID? Both help make sure he is aware you have made the requested changes.

Congratulations to your Earthcache :)

Unfortunately, yours is a few thousand miles too far away for us, but we'll be renting a car today to pick up one or two just outside our normal caching area :)

It published yesterday!

I am working on a couple of others but I wanted to get one done first before I did the others.

Farrtom

Thank you for starting this thread. I am working with the land manager now to get permission for my first earthcache. Your thread will keep me from worrying about having fallen through the cracks and knowing what to expect.

Wish me luck.
