Create a badge for cachers to add to their profile

Hi,

I Have a series of multis set around the lost medieval Churches of Norwich UK. They are

Losing My Religion First Verse

Losing My Religion Second Verse

Losing My Religion Yiddish remix

Losing My Religion Cover Version

Losing My Religion Digital Remaster

 

They are all slightly different and the last one is a 5/5 T/D What I would like to do is give anyone who finds all of them and in doing so visits the sites of all the lost Churches within the city walls a badge that they can paste on their profile.

I have seen it done before and indeed have one "Going for Gold" on my profile but not being either an artist nor computer whiz I have no idea how to go about it.

 

Please help and if anyone could produce one for me that would be amazing. I think it has to be done so that it can be cut and pasted using HTML codes but Honestly I have no idea.

I can help you with this. You need to create some kind of image on your computer using some sort of photo editing software such as Paint or Photoshop. Once you have created an image you are happy with, you need to save it somewhere on an internet server. You can use personal webspace, flickr, shutterfly, or even upload it as an image to one of your caches (like the final) - lots of options there.

 

Once it's stored somewhere on the internet, it will have its own web address. Save that web address somewhere.

 

You can invite people to display the badge you created on their profile by offering them some html to insert into their profiles (or wherever they want to share their achievement). Use this code, but replace the web address in it with the correct address for your badge:

<img src=http://thewebaddressofthepicgoeshere>

 

There are a couple other things you can do also. If you want the badge centered, you can do this:

<center><img src=http://thewebaddressofthepicgoeshere></center>

 

Or if you want the image to also be a link (like to the geocache page) you can do this:

<a href=http://theaddressofthegeocachepage><img src=http://thewebaddressofthepicgoeshere border=0></a>

Here's a little souvenir I made just now. It's got a stylized version of an angel like the one from the REM tune, and 5 stars for the 5 multis. It's just an idea. Once you settle on a design, it's simple to include a little HTML in a profile, as mentioned.

That is fantastic. Love it!! I was just struggling on Paint trying to think ideas and flipped back to forum to find just what I was looking for. Many thanks. Can you help me with next bit. As I understand it I need to upload this to either flicker or my web site then I can copy the location is that the next step?

Load it to the cache page.

Add a Note and use Add Image option.

You can either date the note to before publication, or delete it.

 

The photo will show in the cache page gallery.

When you upload it to an image hosting site you will want to look for the direct link to the image, eg. http://www.website.com/image.png

 

Then it's really easy to make the basic html code for it, it will just be.

What is the URL (address) of the image you're trying to use?

 

One common mistake is to use the URL of an HTML page that displays the image, rather than the URL of the image itself.

Upload the image to Geocaching.com. You could upload it to a cache page (any page, even an archived page), or to your Profile (Upload it as an "avatar", but you don't need to use that as your avatar). Once it's somewhere on the site, it will have an address something like this:

http://img.geocaching.com/user/0f2aa699-fac3-4f51-a557-77de54ef62df.jpg

 

Be sure you're using a URL that starts with "http" (not "https") and ends with "jpg" (or GIF or PNG, a browser-friendly image extension). Then it will work fine.

Yes! You did it!

 

Click the thumbnail, and the image pops up in a window. Right-click that full-sized image, click "properties", and that's the URL you needed:

Put that in the HTML on your page, and it should work!

The flikr photo URL should look like:

However... You may have the flikr settings wrong, as there is an "S" in the http part, which stops people copying the photo.

How did you get the URL of the image itself? I always get roadblocks from Flickr, so I don't use it for anything except to post the handful of pictures allowed.

 

Is Flickr a suitable storage place for souvenir images such as in this thread? If so, how do I get my Flickr settings un-wrong? I'd keep the info handy for the next time this comes up.

Have a couple of EXIF viewers. (Never know when they will "come in handy" )

 

As for flikr settings, despite having/had 2 accounts, I'm not too certain.

But do know there is a Public and a Private setting for photos.

Used to use the site to post photos for a blog, and used Public to link them to show on the blog.

 

(It's the fact the link has HTTPS, rather than HTTP, at the start of the URL that it is not showing as an image link...)

No. If they cache with someone that is premium they can still find it.

If the photo shows in the cache description, I'm stumped!

I right clicked on the photo and then clicked on properties - that gave me the URL (using ie - I think slightly different if you are using a different browser)

re photo showing in cache description - I have decided (maybe not the best way but the only way my brain can get round it) I will type out the code, print it, scan it, save jpg somewhere and paste link to the jpg - that should show simply the code (cos it will think it is a picture) and not link to the picture.

 

re size of picture - ideally it should be about 1/6 of the size it is - but am not sure how I can reduce it. Would the reduction be some more HTML? cos at the moment the picture is simply the size geocaching.com makes it.

How do I add a badge to my profile?  I attempted a cache series today & whilst I had 2 DNFs I did attempt them all & the CO instructions do say the badge he created can be claimed for attempting the series.  I have no problem copying the URL but cannot find where to dump it on my profile pages.  Thanks.

On your Profile page, select the settings gear icon on the right side tight under the photo region.  It should bring up your account settings page.  If it is not already there, select "Profile Information" from the drop down box.  Paste the html into the "About" section at the location you desire.

Thanks for the quick response.  Easy when you know how!  But puzzled by locating it as it is determined to snuggle up to my "about me" text, no matter how much space I try to leave.  Shall play around now I have the principle.

Look to see if <br /><br /> is both before and after your badge html.  That should give you a break between your badge and what comes before and after it.

I have suggested as a feature that GS create a "Badges and Achievements" tab for our user profiles.  Because the "About" tab is the only one that is user-editable, it's used for third party stats, badges, custom souvenirs, and pretty much anything else.  It would be nice if the "About" tab was just used for geocacher Bio information and other editable tabs created for stats and achievements.

Good idea.  This is what confused me initially - I was looking for somewhere to paste in the badge.  I don't really feel it is part of my profile info.
