Viking Dragon Shield Geocoin created

The samples of my first Geocoin design are in!

The coin on the first two photos is a LE and will remain colorless. The coin on the last two photos is a RE. Seven different versions will go into production and six of them will be for sale in different shops. The seventh will be the AE and only available through trade.

The front is designed after a traditional wooden Viking shield. I choose for the dragon design on the shield to make it more complete and because I really like dragon coins. The wood grain came out perfectly, you can even see the nails. The edge is made to look like pieces of metal placed like scales and nailed to the shield. The runes around the edge on the back are for you to decipher, as you can also deduct from the text in the middle. That text is a verse from the Hávamál, part of the Edda, a collection of Old Norse poems from the Viking age. To complete the design there is a Viking/Celtic knot as background for the text.

I hope you like my design. I surely am proud of them and think they look great. I will post an update when I receive more information from the mint.

I love the antique bronze plain finish. The wood looks great! I hope to be able to get one of the LE's.

I generally like the design, the coin looks good as a coin, although the dragon is no viking style. I also have to disagree with your use of runes. Never forget that runes were not meant to transcribe English... there are some sounds (th, for instance) that fit and have their own sign, and others (sh, for instance) that don't and generally don't work well with runes; and there were rules to follow to use them correctly. Plus, "than" does not mean the same thing as "then".

If you need some help with runes, send me a PM, I'll be glad to be of some use.

I really like this coin! I had an idea to make a shield coin in similar fashion, but I just couldn't solidify it in my mind the way you did here and it's really well done. I'm partial to the all metal look, but the strong contrast in the colors is beautiful. The wood grain is fantastic. Just really cool all around! I'd love to trade with you when you're ready :D

The pricing of the Viking Dragon Shield Geocoin in our shop:

RE editions: € 9,95 incl VAT / € 8,22 excl VAT (outside Europe)

LE (75 pieces) editions: € 10,95 incl VAT / € 9,05 excl VAT (outside Europe)

As version E is preferred by so many people, we have decided to change this one into a RE edition.

There will be a few sets (of 7 pieces) available containing the AE edition.

Availability of the coins: last week of October.

Today we decided on the names for the 7 versions. All names come from the worlds of the Viking Gods.

Version A is named Sleipnir, the Eight-Legged War Horse of Odin. Not only is he the swiftest horse in the world, he can carry Odin across land, sea or sky, and from the Halls of Asgard to the Realms of the Dead.

Version B is named Helheim, the Underground Nordic land of the deep-frozen dead, ruled by Hel.

Version C is named Asgard, the Home of the Aesir Gods. Ruled by Odin and Frigg, the halls of Asgard have been built to withstand the onslaught of giants.

Version D is named Yggdrasil, the giant ash tree at the Hub of the Universe. Yggdrasil is home to an abundance of wildlife both magical and malicious. Dew from the Yggdrasil supplies mead for Valhalla, and when the world ends in almost total devastation this tree will still be there, containing seeds for the next crop of beings.

Version E is named Valkyries, raving warrior ladies who descend from the skies and take the dead to Valhalla, the Hero's Heaven. They are a team of forty Viking warrior maidens on horseback, led by the goddess Freya.

Version F is named Mjollnir, the Hammer of Thor. It was crafted by the Dwarves and every time this hammer is wielded, lightning issues forth.

Version G is named Valhalla, Odin's Heavenly All-Inclusive Afterlife Resort. Dead Viking warriors are escorted there by the Valkyries for an afterlife rich in booze, punch-ups and uncouth language.

I love the way the texture comes out on the Asgard coin, and the colours on Yggdrasil!

Will all versions be on all websites later (except AE)? I'm thinking that shipping might be lower for me from wellner.se, but I won't want to risk not getting the versions that I'm hoping for.

was going to wait until the full sets came available but didn't think my wife would enjoy me doing that especially with the new kid just arrived.

so i sat here staring at my computer debating for the last hour... yggdrasil, asgard or sleipnir... finally (painfully) decided on asgard! can't wait!

I'm very happy that so many cachers like this design and the coins themselves. Thank you all for your positive comments and of course for buying the coin(s). I can only hope that if I were to embark on a next coin project, it will be just as successful.

And where can we find a Mjollnir version?

I just checked the shops that are selling the Viking Dragon Shield coins, but non of them have the Mjollnir version currently listed. They are most likely sold out, but you could try and mail geocachingshop.nl if they have one left.

They were never there :( I ordered them minutes after the release, but they never showed them in the shop. I'll ask WJ.
