+vonadel Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 Hi! I have a rather strange problem regarding geocaching.com; sometimes I completely lose my internet connection when I am at this site. Tonight my internet connection went down four times when I was trying to log some caches. And even when I was reading in the forum I lost the connection. No problems at other sites. I have to wait about 5 minutes before I have internet connection again. What could be the problem? Something in the Firewall? It's pretty frustrating. I have had the same problem o couple of times. I'm running Windows 7 64-bit. Best regards, /VonAdel Quote
+pppingme Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 Nothing the site could do could shut your internet connection down. Define what you mean by "losing internet connection", is your modem going out of sync? Quote

You could try a wifi hotspot somewhere else, to see if it's your home network (if that's where it's happening). I guess it could be something weird with your router, but that's just a guess. Google your problem, and you'll see a troubleshooting process by Microsoft. My laptop disconnects from wifi at random (it's kind of a bug in this model of Samsung computer), but I right-click the icon, and "fix the connection", and it's OK again. It's completely random. If I wait, then it fixes itself on its own, at some future time when it feels like it. ...Are you using a Windows 8 "Samsung Series 7 Chronos" laptop? Edited August 26, 2013 by kunarion Quote
+vonadel Posted August 26, 2013 Author Posted August 26, 2013 I guess that the problem I had yesterday was a general problem after all, because later my Internet-connection was shut down at other sites too. BUT, one problem remains. A problem I have had earlier, and that's why I thought that yesterdays problem was related to Geocaching.com too. The problem is that I can not upload a photo to this site. If I want to upload a photo to a log it always stop after about 8% and the internet connection is shut down. When I troubleshoot the problem in windows it says that the Internet connection was shut down and that the standardgateway was not avaible. Windows then correct this problem. But next time I try to upload the photo, the same thing happens. I am not using wifi but a direct connection from pc to router. I have tried to restart the router and even tried with another network cable, but no luck. When I upload photos to, say Picasa, I don't have this problem. Strange, what could it be? Quote
+vonadel Posted August 26, 2013 Author Posted August 26, 2013 (edited) He, I now tried with a laptop connected via wifi to the same router, and that went fine! So, I guess the problem is with my pc. Is it the firewall after all, or a setting in windows somewhere? Any suggestions? It's getting even more strange. When I'm using Internet Explorer it works! But not when I'm using Chrome which is my default browser that I like best (until now?). But I use Chrome on the laptop too, and there it works. *Sigh*... Edited August 26, 2013 by vonadel Quote

Is it the firewall after all, or a setting in windows somewhere? Any suggestions? How long has your problem been going on? Various browsers, PCs, Operating systems, and electronic components use the Internet differently. If a site's server is slow, everything will "time out" in its own way. There are many settings that could be adjusted, but start with clearing the browser cache and disabling some plugins you never use. You can clear "cookies", too, in which case you must log into the web sites again. Ever since I've had DSL, I've used a wifi/modem/router rather than the modem provided by the ISP. This helps me to figure out connection issues. If the original modem has the same problem, it's not the modem, and I can try my old PC and rule out a PC issue (and the ISP can't say it's the fault of my personal modem, since I'm using theirs exactly as they installed it). So the ISP usually says it's definitey the 3-foot phone wire from the modem to the phone jack that's bad -- it's never that wire , but I have to let the guy exchange it for a beat-up old cable anyway. But I'm guessing there's a temporary glitch along the Internet somewhere. I tried to access a file on my own web site last night, and the whole site was down for web serving. Yet there were no particular errors at the web host, and FTP (direct file access) was OK. And it started working like magic. My advice is to give it a few days and see if it clears up. The Internet stays very quiet about problems, servers get fixed with no fanfare, and things "just start working" again. You hardly ever find out what fixed it. +vonadel Posted August 26, 2013 Author Posted August 26, 2013 Thank you for your reply kunarion. I don't think wating a few days will solve the problem, because last time I tried to upload a photo was a couple a months ago, and the problem remains since then. I have tried to uninstall Chrome and then install it again, but no luck. I think it is such strange problem. I don't understand why the whole internet connection is shutting down just because I want to upload a photo!? Stationary PC: Internet Explorer works. Chrome -Does not work. Laptop PC Wifi: Chrome works. Both connected to the same router. Very frustrating. I don't know what more to do. Quote
