What Do Others Do with Benchmarks That Aren't on GC.com?

Thot

Personally, I don't do anything with them. I usually only even find them by pure luck and observation, maybe I'll take a picture and capture the HH2 coordinates, but that's it. Personally I have no interest in Waymarking, so there's nothing else to do but ignore them and move on. I sometimes like to imagine their importance to somebody else, but that's it.

I usually find these while doing other activities. I found a "Defense Mapping Agency" benchmark from 1982 at an old coastal defense battery in Marin County, CA while hiking. I just snap a picture and move on. I've claimed a couple on Waymarking.com but have decided I only want to concentrate on finding the ones here at geocaching.com. Just makes it simpler.

Where can I find out how to do this?

Thot, you can read the "Ngs Forum Faq" at the top of this forum (the NGS forum was merged into this one a year or so ago), then I encourage you to ask questions in this forum. Because the NGS database is used by professional surveyors, it's vital to understand the correct process, terminology, etc. before attempting to submit recovery reports.

For some odd reason I will be in Bridgeport Ct on Thanksgiving. (Invited by a friend of a friend of a friend... Don't ask.) Checking out what to do when I sneak out for a cigarette... No caches nearby, so I checked out the benchmarks. On geocaching, I find LX0846, about a mile away. Which seems to show in Google Maps as still there...

But, there is a series closer (LX7559, for instance.) They were set in 1984, but do not show up on Geocaching. I thought anything set before 2000 would show on Geocaching? Curious. Or were they set then, but added to NGS after 2000?

This is sort of unrelated but I was looking at benchmarks on Google-earth and came across three located on Midway Island (Atoll). I might be able to venture to Midway this coming summer so figured might as well try to find these benchmarks provided the opportunity. I've searched a bit online but cannot find any info (description). Finding the benchmarks shouldn't be too hard, with the coordinates provided, considering the size of the island

I was just hoping to find a description someplace.

Their data sheets can be found in the NGS database.

Uhm.. really important tip!

If you click on the NGS logo at the top, you'll be taken to the NGS datasheet. If you click on the GC icon, you'll be taken to the Geocaching page (if there is one). :)

Glad to see someone using my tool!
