+northernpenguin
Over the last couple months I've noticed that local events are no longer featured in the Groundspeak Newsletter emails I receive. In fact, no events located in Canada show up in the newsletter. Here's what I got in my August 19th newsletter, even though I am located in Ontario, Canada and Groundspeak has my home coordinates. I still get my "Recent Geocaches" properly. I'm missing a lot of upcoming events with this, and well it used to work properly here so I'm under the impression something got broken. I know there are closer events than these coming up, and they are in Ontario, Canada: Nearby Events Sittin' Round; Talkin' Cache 20 August 2013 292.25 km SW - Ohio - United States A Month of Meet and Greets - #20 20 August 2013 298.99 km S - Pennsylvania - United States 1/2 A Month Worth of Night Meet & Greets #3 8/20 20 August 2013 276.97 km S - Pennsylvania - United States Bike To It Flash Mob 20 August 2013 313.87 km W - Michigan - United States A Month of Meet and Greets #21 21 August 2013 292.38 km S - Pennsylvania - United States 1/2 A Month Worth of Night Meet & Greets #4 8/21 21 August 2013 276.97 km S - Pennsylvania - United States An Ice Cream Social for Day 21 of 31 21 August 2013 311.37 km SW - Michigan - United States Are You Still Sponge Worthy? 21 August 2013 202.23 km E - New York - United States The Eye Scream Social: Royal Oak 21 August 2013 294.3 km SW - Michigan - United States I Scream (for Ice Cream) w/ 10 Days Left! 21 August 2013 281.73 km SW - Michigan - United States Quote Link to comment
Keystone
Can you link to an event listing that's closer to your home and which was scheduled for August 20 or 21? Quote Link to comment
+northernpenguin
Can you link to an event listing that's closer to your home and which was scheduled for August 20 or 21? Not for August 20/21. On the other hand if the newsletter is next two days only.... it's lost it's value to me anyway. There's a large event cache this weekend in Ontario - http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=b392467c-a875-4293-aa45-3d7d34114794 Now that I look back at my August 12 newsletter I see one Ontario event located in it. The August 12 newsletter showed me events for Aug 12-16. Why does the August 19 newsletter stop at two days? Quote Link to comment
+northernpenguin
So it looks like it's not a bug, it's that I'm getting a report of the next 10 "close events" but since the newsletter considers a 500km drive "close" I miss out on more local events that I am more likely to attend. Is there a way to tell the newsletter to pull that search in a bit closer, so I can get less notifications about event caches in Pennsylvania and more event notifications for events in Ontario, say within a two hour drive? I'm 150km from the Bayfield one and 246km from L&A. I guess I live to close to event rich States to make use of the geocaching newsletter for events, because that Bayfield one is not in my list. Also there is an event 8km from my house on Aug 28th that isn't on this newsletter. Do you notice the average distance to a "close" event for me on the August 19th newsletter is over 200km? Pup Patrol
Geez, I just noticed that the distance in the newsletter is miles. Not sure why that is. I'll look into that. I guess all the "nearby" events that are less than 200 kms away are done with. Last week's newsletter listed these events: Vertical Challenge Pizza Party 6 14 August 2013 153.09 mi S - Pennsylvania - United States BIG visits COG 14 August 2013 34.05 mi NW - Ontario - Canada Hobo Campfire along the OC&T RR 16 August 2013 184.72 mi S - Pennsylvania - United States All Aboard the Flash Mob II 16 August 2013 184.53 mi S - Pennsylvania - United States GeoTrain II 17 August 2013 192.32 mi S - Pennsylvania - United States Geocaching 101 - Quadeville, On 17 August 2013 127.74 mi NE - Ontario - Canada International Geocaching Day & TB Race- Peta Mob 17 August 2013 159.63 mi NE - Ontario - Canada COG’s International Geocaching Day Breakfast! 17 August 2013 38.75 mi NW - Ontario - Canada 2013 International Geocaching Day 17 August 2013 151.19 mi E - Ontario - Canada HNAG First Annual Family Picnic 17 August 2013 111.14 mi S - Ontario - Canada B. +masterninja
Here's my list of Nearby Events from London, Ontario. I'm hosting the Bayfield's Meet and Greet Event on 24th of August which is 75kms from my home and plan on attending the Ice Cream Summer Social event August 25th which is 32 kms from home as well as BaconWarrior's Birthday Bash September 28th which is even closer at 18 kms. None of which are on this list. For the most part, not saying they aren't as good to attend, but way would I want to know about an event 175 kms from home. I used to get caches published out as far as Kitchener and Goderich areas, some 75 kms plus. Quote Link to comment
Pup Patrol
I've either gone blind or lost my marbles. I can't figure out where to make it so the newsletter shows distances in kms. It's configured in our profile to use metric units, and that works everywhere except for the newsletter. B. Quote Link to comment
+niraD
This should be a temporary anomaly, created by the combination of the 10-event limit in the newsletter, and the flood of events listed for the specific purpose of collecting 31 Days of August souvenirs.
