TB Caches near Airports

In planning for our trip to Breckenridge in January, I discovered there is a TB Hotel cache right near the DEN airport. The Hippy Hippo is already packed with my ski togs so I don;t forget to bring him along. I think I rememeber seeing a cache near Hartsfield in Atlanta following another TB's thread once too. Are there any other airport caches out there and are they popular? If so I will hide one near RDU. I have already scouted out an appropriate tree in an easily accesible parking lot just off airport property. icon_biggrin.gif

First and foremost, THINK EXTRA HARD before placing a cache at or near an airport.

Here in Pittsburgh, we're lucky, because the airport is bordered by several parks and by a cemetary. If you're traveling to Greater Pitt (a hub for USAirways for so long as they last), there are two caches which have served very well as informal travel bug hotels because they're one exit away from the airport:

"Resurrection Aerie" is the easiest to find, for those who don't have much time.

"Robin Hill Cache" is a more challenging hike and hide, but it is in a beautiful nature preserve with nice trails.

Please try to visit one of these caches if you ever get to Pittsburgh. Thanks!

Next time, instead of getting married, I think I'll just find a woman I don't like and buy her a house.

I agree little green men, that in today's climate this is a sensitive issue. The site I have in mind is in a cache friendly tree in a wooded area behind the Hilton on the access road connecting the airport to I-40. I think that sensible cachers will be able to access the site without drawing undue attention. icon_wink.gif

wimseyguy,

That is a fine spot for a cache. I'm familiar with the area, having lived in Durham for 3 years to study ACC basketball. Somehow, Duke University made a mistake and accidentally awarded me a law degree.

Good luck with your cache. I may visit it sometime, as my sister now lives in Sanford.

I grabbed Builder Dan from a cache near Port Columbus International Airport here in Ohio... I live here, so obviously I wasn't planning on flying him out of state or anything.

Anyway, I snatched him up and took him 25 miles SE - after which someone promptly grabbed him and took him right back to the same cache he started from, right next to the airport. icon_confused.gif

And that was the last we've seen of poor ol' Builder Dan. Someone flying out of Columbus grabbed him about 4 months ago, took him into Canada - and he hasn't been heard from since. icon_eek.gif

I was hoping he'd have a good adventure... it was the first and only bug I have found, and I really geeked him up with some pics and a story. icon_biggrin.gif

(edit: I just dropped an e-mail to the last person to see Dan... we'll see if I can get an update)

The RDU TB Hotel cache is open for business just in time for holiday travel. It is an easy in/out on the way to the airport. The cache page is at:

Sorry I do not know if I have made this link directly, I am lo-tech, and earn my living with sharp knives and fire.

Travel Troll's secret bug stash (California)GC76C5 (now archived) was located fairly close to Burbank (BUR) Airport. It was located in a cemetery.

Grand Central Station GC4D38 is located across the street from the north runways of LAX--Los Angeles. The road it is on was closed for security reasons, so I was a little nervous to be poking around in the bushes in a semi-secure location.

Never at a loss to promote one's own cache ... icon_biggrin.gif

I looked extensively for a place to create a TB hotel near Newark airport here in the NY/NJ area in response to my TB's having difficulties in getting overseas. Nothing doing! No area was secure AND close to the airport.

So I placed the Hotel near major highway arteries that people might travel to on the way from and to New York area airports.

New York International Travel Bug Hotel and Casino

I even created a sister hotel in Auckland, New Zealand, too.

Though there are several in the area this one is most convenient for the airport. The road leaving the airport drops you straight onto Harbor Island- full of hotels, retaurants and marinas- and recently used to film a new Jim Carrey movie.

I just dropped my airplane themed TB bug here yesterday (my first TB!). She hopes to travel to many airport caches in her journeys.

After watching the how successful the LAX TB cache (Grand Central Station) is, I am creating one at San Jose Mineta Airport. It will be OFF of the airport but accessable by the Airport Parking shuttle so folks on a layover can get there without a long walk ot taxi or car. A VTA city bus will getcha there too.

That's a pretty scary cache placement. I'm not sure I'd want to be poking around in the parking structure at one of the world's busiest airports.

I agree, we should be sensitive near airports, clear plastic might be better than ammo cans

Just a note to maybe let you think a little.

In the UK we have temporarily archived our Airport Bug hotels due to the recent security scares, particularly near Heathrow & Gatwick. Both of these airports have been surrounded by the military looking for anything suspicious.

The thoughts being that if anyone was seen wandering around near the airports with a gadget in hand, then it could be seen as suspicious behaviour and I'm sure that the police would act first & ask questions later, so alot of time wasting. Also as the caches are mainly ammo boxes then I don't think that they would last very long if found!

The Heathrow Bug Hotel was one of our caches and we've archived / removed it due to ongoing security concerns. Despite it's location one mile from the airport in a nature area, there was still concern about it's proximity to the airport.

Whenever I am traveling, I get the coordinates for all of the airports involved. Then I do an advanced search by coordinates to find the nearest caches for each. If there're any TBs going my way, I'll pick 'em up! I'm in the process of scouting a few locations for Ronald Reagan Washington National. I was going to put one on the airport property, but a cop started asking me questions when he saw me wandering around (averaging coordinates).

I am an airline employee and am working on getting permission on hiding a mini cache on airline property about 1000 feet from the Anchorage terminal. Will be in a public area right off the street.

If I get approval, it will be an easy one to reach on foot while at the airport.

Wrote my manager about this yesterday, hope to hear back soon.

My girlfriend (Newtie) and I are considering placing one at Essex Skypark in Maryland. We have permission from the property owners, and we actually have it placed there (Newtie and I are just arguing over whether or not it's a good spot). So yeah, when I send it in for review, it will be a good airport cache icon_smile.gif

New cache near Anchorage Airport.

You can get there via a couple different shuttles if you are stuck in the terminal or wish to drop off/pick up a TB.

Have fun when you visit Alaksa!

GRB Green Bay, WI. While not exactly on what some would call "The beaten path," GRB has one called "Tenner's Bug Hotel." It's just north of the airport and is just a short drive away. Actually it's within walking distance if you have the time (and less rotundity than I.) Hmmm... maybe if I walked that distance more often I would have less of aforementioned volume.

There are a few bug motels around Minneapolis St. Paul airport, but the best known is inside the Mall of America. Think how many familys vacationing, stop there on their way in and out of MN. Some folks even fly in just to go to that mall for the weekend. Best of all, you can find it with out a GPS.
