Here is a clip from our local news. These cachers talk about being "obsessed and addicted" I would say so, but not in a good way.

Based on the treatment to other cachers both publicly and privately things have been less than friendly, to say the least.

Look at this publicly posted note on one cache, publicly calling out other cachers finds- based on nothing more than assumptions.

 

"Went out after a bit of caching to do some maintenance on my own caches along the south end of the Loop. Stopped here as I felt this was a really easy find and the previous DNF's I can understand as this cache wasn't there, missing, gone. Even the tree it was on and it looks like it was taken out for some time now as the stump has even darken up. So I don't know about the three finders after, unless did they really do any caching, think not or just getting numbers, disappointed. I will email them. This cache now will be archived as there is no more hiding spot. Sorry to those that didn't find and thanks to those that really and I mean really did find it."

 

I have also been on the receiving end of similar correspondence of this manner from some of these cachers. Sometimes over something as small as an NM logs.

This type of "obsession and addiction" have given us many poor quality, dangerous and illegal caches. But if you raise concerns be prepared for nasty messages and accusations. When I got into caching I was under the impression there was some type of community spirit involved. After seeing how some cachers treat other cachers, I think we will just do this on our own. One of those cases where a few can ruin it for the many- because they take it too far.

Unfortunately there are folks like that in every type of game, sport, or other activity.

Yes. I would say that someone has a compulsive obsession. As seems common with some forum posters. According to the guidelines, COs should delete bogus logs. If the cache has been missing, if the tree has been chopped down, then the log is bogus, and should be deleted.

Why you should take offense to this astounds me. If you think that guidelines should be ignored, then perhaps this is not the proper hobby for you.

In the quoted log by the alleged CO, my only concern would be that they didn't visit the cache location soon enough after a 'rash' of DNFs to preclude the bogus 'I was there so I deserve a smilie' logs.

 

Seriously, this is Geocaching: go to the posted co-ordinates, find the container, and sign the log. Then claim your find for the cache.

NOT: go to the posted co-ordinates and claim a smilie because you were there.

I watched the video clip and also read your post. I don't see anything to get upset over?

 

If the tree the cache as hidden on has been gone for some time, there was a string of DNFs and then a few people claimed a find, I would probably write a similar log.

 

If seen similar things happen on caches here. The cache is obviously missing, then in amongst the DNFs, there is a 'TFTC' or 'QEF'. LOL, you just have to laugh. Of course, a cache owner should deleted such logs.

Same here. I'm trying to figure out what the correlation is between the video and what the OP wrote in their post. The two aren't even in the same ballpark. If what was in the video is enough to set the OP off, this REALLY isn't the hobby for you.

I didn't see a correlation between the video and what the OP posted either but I'm not complaining because the reporter in the video was really cute.

I'm with the paddleman on this one. Nice even reporting, except for getting the start date wrong. (Unless caching didn't start in Ontario until 2001 and they are being provincial about that fact?) She was interested and cute. The two escorting cachers were up front about their level of involvement and not scarygeeky.

 

Heck, my wife has said I'm obsessed with caching at times too. But yesterday she told me to take the dog and go caching and get both of us out of her hair for a few hours.

 

If the OP has issues, perhaps she should either deal with them directly at the source, or write a more coherent post to clarify what the point is. I don't seem much of a connection between the OP issues and what is shown in that clip either.
