Haunted Halloween Theme Cache?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have a cache theme idea I was thinking about, but I want to get some feedback before I go ahead with it. Here is it:

I was thinking of creating a “Haunted Canyon” Cache around Halloween. On Oct. 30, 31 & Nov. 1st, I would set the cache up with scary graveyard type props. The rest of year, I would turn it into some type of more traditional cache (still with a spooky theme) and if goes well, jazz that cache up again come next Oct. 31.

"The Haunted Canyon" cache would be hunted for ideally at night. I would give a start GPS coordinates. Then any geocacher would have to follow some type of reflectors to the actual cache site (maybe I can find reflector eyes). On the cache web page, I would give the beginning of a very scary fictional story of what was once down in the canyon. At the actual cache site I would have scary stuff set up (e.g., a grave stones, cob webs, possibly a strobe light that is triggered by a motion sensor). I would have a take only cache container with candy in it (I know food is not a good cache item, but its only for three days). I would also have the rest of the scary story for cachers to read in the dark canyon.

The rest of the year, I would just have the cache container and put scary or glow in the dark type stuff (no more candy).

I live in San Diego, CA. I know of a nearby public land canyon that is infrequently traveled. I am pretty sure I could set something up there without it being disturbed for a few days.

This is NOT a temporary cache. Though the type of cache experience would change.

I already emailed this cache description to the SoCaAdmin to see if it would get approved.

What you people think? Please post any of your ideas on how I can make this a really cool & scary cache site (but not too expensive).

You'll have to clear up your definitions to get this approved.

First I don't think this is an Event Cache. They are organized events. Potlucks picnics or meetings.

Temporary caches are not allowed. Changing caches after a set time is frowned upon too. Maybe you should call it Scary canyon cache. Bring it out around Halloween. Just don't make it a Halloween theme. It would be strange to search for a halloween cache in July.

I've seen several night-only caches. Glowin the dark stuff doesn't work very well. High visability reflective tape works pretty good.

1st Annual Halloween Radioactive

I'm co-planning this one with several other teams, which may very well become an annual event depending on how well it's received. If you look to add some theme games or whatever into the mix, it could go off very well.

Perhaps you could take a few ideas from there. If you need further details (descriptions are a tad vague), just drop me an e-mail. We're working out details and will be adding new information periodically.

high-visibility tape is too obvious. Glow-in-the-dark paints are completely invisible in daylight, and activate by blacklight the best. You can do a great series of blacklight-themed caches with the proper planning/materials. The paints being used for this event are bio-degradable, and will disappear after either being walked on or rained on.

At a recent sci-fi club picnic, I got a few of my fellow attendees to go find a nearby cache with me. This got us to talking about neat cache containers.

I have a life-sized model skull. My thought was to build a hinge so that the top opens up and paint it too look like it had been burried in the ground for a number of years. I ultimately rejected this cache container idea because of the fuss that would be made if someone found it and called the cops.

For an event cache that was only going to be out for a short time, this might work. If the cache was going to stay longer, it should probably be replaced with a more traditional container.

I had that idea too for a permanent cache. I found a medical supply place that had cheap plastic rejects they couldn't sell to the medical colleges. I was going to place a *fake* skeleton in the desert with the skull as the cache container. For added thrills, I was planning a few other surprises in the cache.

In the end, I just got too lazy. Making this cache was far too time intensive.

I think these ideas are all pretty awesome, and the idea about getting the coordinates to a certain area and then having to follow a scattered trail of glow in the dark paint or something would be awesome and make it IMPOSSIBLE to take at day (which is a good thing)

My only question, and this is more or less reguarding my own plans for a night time cache. But I was wandering if a cache that would require people to buy blacklights, or find/borrow would be abiding by the "Commercial Caches / Caches that Solicit" policy of geocaching.com I'm pretty sure that this would be exempt from that rule, because technically it could be considered a cache that you need special equipment for, but if people could only do it at night with the aid of a blacklight, is that abiding by policy? Like I said, I'm not trying to get you in trouble, or to second think this, but I'd just like to know your opinions, and I'll definately get the opinion of my regional approver person when and if I submit a cache using the blacklight idea, but like I said I just want to get your opinions.

PS. Sorry if I repeated myself, it's been a very long day, and I'm tired.

Not only acceptable, but done and a bit of a challenge. Tamo's Clan are a bit twisted, in a fun sort of way.

Black light cache, 1 of several they have done.
