Fledermaus Posted February 28, 2003 Posted February 28, 2003 I wonder how many people have placed caches near to or on military bases? A situation happened yesterday in the small community that may be of interest to those who have placed caches in such locations. For details, please go to the following web address: http://tv.ksl.com/index.php?nid=5&sid=11294 A geocache was mistaken for a bomb, when it was discovered under a bridge near the Hill AFB in Roy, WA. +EraSeek Posted February 28, 2003 Posted February 28, 2003 Actually, that was Roy, Utah. Not Washington. Still, a bad idea! I found one like that in Everett and called it in right away to be archived. No one needs those kind of problems right now. Quote
+IV_Warrior Posted February 28, 2003 Posted February 28, 2003 I know of a virtual that's on an active base. The info you need is just a few feet inside the gate. The base has security forces at the gate, you can't just drive right in, but as long as you have photo ID, they'll let you go in to get the info you need. You're still within view of the gate guards at the point you need to be. I had a pleasant conversation with one of the guards about geocaching and GPSr units while I was there. Turns out he owns a GPSr for hunting purposes, and is looking at replacing it, and wanted to see mine and know what I thought of it.... I'm lost. I've gone to find myself. If I should happen to get back before I return, please ask me to wait. Quote

During high alerts you get your car searched. I left my GPS lying in the seat turned on when I got out. It was during the last Orange Alert. I was riding with someone else. They said nothing asked us where we were going and off we went. It was a hassle but worth seeing the cache object. I'd never dream of searching for something near a base that was a physical however. beatnik Quote
+Jamie Z Posted February 28, 2003 Posted February 28, 2003 There is a micro hidden at Camp Shelby, just south of Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Camp Shelby is a military training base. It is gated and guarded, and you have to present ID to enter, but the public is allowed because there is a military museum on the base. The first time I went there (took me two tries to find) and saw the guard station and the concrete barriers, I was sure I was in the wrong place, so I pulled off the road to double check the cache page and the coordinates. I believe it was placed by someone stationed there, and in my opinion, is one of the neatest caches in Mississippi... even if it is a micro. Jamie Quote
+Renegade Knight Posted March 1, 2003 Posted March 1, 2003 That's why bases have fences. Outside is "non base" Inside is "Base". If a park was up agasint a base who the heck cares if a cahe is by the base so long as it's not in it? I can see not having one at the gate, or by a guard tower. Normally bases own land area larger than the fenced area. Wherever you go there you are. Quote
