SombreHippie Posted August 13, 2003 Posted August 13, 2003 So, last night we were out for a drive, randomly realizing we didn't know where one of the larger roads in our neighborhood actually went, so we followed it. We then realized as we got further and further away, into a neighborhood we'd probably never heard of or been to in our entire lives living here, that the plan for the night had become "waste gas." Grabbing the GPS, we decided to see what caches were around instead, and we found a set of 3 in the same park that I fortunately actually had print-outs for in the car, so we headed out that way. Parked at the end of the cul-de-sac, and proceeded to find the trail it talked about on the print-out, and started following it. Got down the trail a few metres, and saw a large campfire towards where we were headed. We looked at eachother, shrugged, and continued on. Once we got parallel to the campfire, the people asked us, "Do you speak?" We answered, to which they asked us what we were doing. "Wandering...?" "Ah, good. We thought you might be the cops or something. Either turn left, or come join us!" We decided to continue up the trail on our cache search. 5m later, the trail drops off into a sandy field containing 2 large dumpsters... We wandered into it a bit, turned off the flashlight, and looked at the GPS. Apparently we were 125m away from the cache. We looked in the direction of the cache. We then realized that it was directly across that field... no... that wasn't just a field... that's the green of a golf course. *blink* We looked at the cache sheet again... "This trail leads to a VERY PRIVATE golf course! DO NOT TAKE THIS TRAIL! Instead, take the other one." ... Doh! #1 reason to read the entire line instead of just the beginning that gives directions down a trail. So, we backtrack, and this time decide to wander towards the campfire, seeing as we had nothing really better to do. Ended up meeting some very welcoming and generous older folks (well, we're 20, and they were probably mid-40's). We introduced ourselves, and all shook hands, then they welcomed us to stay and hang out around the fire with them. We found ourselves a place to sit, and enjoyed the fire while the others told stories amongst themselves, intermittantly telling us about this place, and asking us questions. Upon finding out where we were from, they laughed. "You really are lost, aren't you!?" Sitting at a campfire on the beach on the river under a full moon near a very bright Mars at the height of a meteor shower with good people, it turned out the night wasn't just a waste of gas. We had an awesome time. After spending a few hours there, sitting, talking, and enjoying the fire, we wandered back to the car. In the discussion on the way back home, it ended up that we'd both found our mental happy places last night. Fire, beach, clear night, full moon, shooting stars, good, welcoming, generous people, drink, cheer, merriment and a GPS. My favourite DNF yet! Quote

Sounds like a great time. That is a big part of why I like geocaching. You just never know what interesting thing or event you will come across.
