+Chief301
There are two main types of maps you'll want for your GPS...topographical maps and routable maps Topographical maps show detailed terrain features like elevation changes, wooded areas, waterways, streets and roads, etc. They are mainly designed for off-road navigation, in other words straight line or as the crow flies. A good site for free topo maps is GPSfiledepot.com The second type of map is routable street maps. The Oregon 450 is capable of providing turn by turn driving directions with the proper routable maps installed. Not spoken directions like a vehicle satnav but it will show the route on the map and beep when it's time for you to turn, along with text directions. A good source for free routable street maps is Openstreetmap.com. The two maps are overlaid on your Oregon's preinstalled base map and when navigating to a Geocache (or any other waypoint) you can switch back and forth between on road and off road navigation. The on road mode will try to keep you on existing streets and roads, so once you reach a parking area you switch to off road mode for the final approach to the cache. Link to comment
