Photo competition May 2013

Recommended Posts

On the way back from the Flashmob tonight I took some great sunset pictures let's see your sunset/sunrise pictures

The rules are:

1) The photo must be cache related and to do with a specific UK cache (any type including events), caching series or caching trip - please include a link to the cache or the GC.... code so we can see where the picture relates to.

2) Maximum of two photos per caching team or cacher.

3) A new thread is started each month, with the OP stating these rules.

4) The winner each month is decided by the winner from the previous month - the new winner starting the thread for the subsequent month. They may set a theme if they wish.

5) Follow the theme

I'm not sure if these photos are close enough to count - while it is the exact route we took home, they were taken on an earlier trip so I will understand if they are disallowed.

I plan to return to this one at some point, when I can spare the time, but though the cache owner permits a find just by going near to the fort and taking a photo, my view is that devalues the cache and it would not be acceptable to me. If we do go back it will be with climbing gear to try to put a rope up to the cache from the boat and get up there to sign the log :) .

These two were taken when doing "East Lothian Quartet - Aberlady Bay" (GC4Z93P4) My link, part of Firth of Forth's excellent series. Aberlady Bay is well-known for its impressive sunsets and this day proved no exception. Hopefully the links work as I've not tried this before.

Edit: well it says "You are not allowed to use that image extension on this board". Any idea why not?!!

An annoying inconsistency between the forum and the main site. I usually save as PNG - that works in both places.

Edit: no, wait, your JPGs work just fine. Here they are:

(Replace "small" with "log" in my URLs to revert to the original size)

Perhaps you mistakenly tried to post an image link to your log entry instead?

Thank you, I! Let's see if this works:

I'm not sure whether the second one here was the one I wanted to post (not sure whether I loaded it onto the log page at all), and it leaves me baffled as to what I'm doing wrong when I tried to link them from my own website.

To get your photo to show in the post above, you need edit the post: Click 'Edit', then click on the tiny icon of a tree and paste the URL into the pop-up box that... ummm... pops up.

Thanks Mrs B. That's what I tried last night. I've just done the same thing to edit as you recommend, but as with last night, it told me I wasn't allowed to post that extension on the board.

I'm obviously signed in, otherwise I wouldn't be able to type this, so I don't know what else I can do to make it speak to my computer/me.

It really shouldn't be this complicated, but that's why I've not entered this competition before.

I went to the link on your first post and clicked the picture... the pic comes up on a page of it's own... then copied the URL and pasted as in Mrs B's post

I got the same error when I tried the URL from your "let's see if this works" post ????

Appears to work for me, and I am using the instructions Mrs B has given you.

That's exactly what happened to me

I spent over an hour trying to upload the 2 photos I posted in September (I had to disqualify myself that time as there was no water in the pictures :o )

You should navigate to where your image is the only thing on the page.

The address (URL) will be something like http://img.geocaching.com/...blah...jpg -- copy that URL.

Then, to put the URL into a forum post, you type something like this:

  • ---------------------------------------------------
Here's my photo of a dead badger:

    ---------------------------------------------------

If the forum says, "You are not allowed to use that image extension on this board", then it's because it doesn't like the image type (the .jpg bit in this example). IIRC, it's happy with .jpg and .png but not .bmp. If I've got the wrong image type then I tend to load the image into Microsoft Paint and then "Save As ..." a different format.

This one was taken a couple of years ago after a wonderful frosty November day tackling several caches en-route to Scafell Pike and back over Glaramara (http://coord.info/GCY5WW, http://coord.info/GC1ABT0, http://coord.info/GC2PDXW, http://coord.info/GC1RNYC, http://coord.info/GC1D25C, http://coord.info/GCTC4V).

The nearest cache to the photo location was From on high on Glaramara - http://coord.info/GCTC4V

What about photos taken at sunrise, but not actually showing the sun? Are they allowed?

Don't see why not

It's been a frustrating month for good sunsets :(

I know we have the option of recycling old photos this month, but surely half the point of geocaching-related activities, photo comp included, is to get us out and about. FuzzyBears, make the weather improve!

Congratulations to milvus-milvus This months winner.... So close between LOTS of the entries but to us this one just got it's nose in front as the end of a 'perfect day'

It's a bit old (July 2010) - but this was snapped on our way back from The Old Byre in Dervaig on the Isle of Mull, only 2/3 mile from the cache.

Hmm, a nearly three year old photo. Good pic, but what a waste of time this month's competition's been for those of us that bothered to get out and take some snaps. I do hope that next month it won't be another case of just raiding the archives.

No matter what you do in this pastime, you always get a whinger!! <_< This is only a bit of fun, get out and find some plastic for crying out loud. :P

You should be with me on this one, HH, as your best effort this month was from 2009. Go to the bottom of the class.

It wasn't just my best effort, it was the only effort I made this month. B) You need to look at the comments that were made with the older pictures and the reply the OP made about them. So please go back to class!! :P

The OP response to the older pictures only confirms my objection: this was a competition best entered without bothering to leave the house. Boring.

Well I know I was most certainly outside in the open air doing caching when I took my photo. It just wasn't during the time frame that you wish it to be!!

Oh dear, my first win, and a controversial one...

Ach No! I wouldn't have said one teddy out of the pram was controversial. The OP made it quite clear that old photo's were allowed. If I! thought that was unfair, then (s)he shouldn't have entered. It's sour grapes that's all.

Well done on winning it is a super picture. :D :D

Now I remember why I stopped coming on this forum......

I don't see anything to say it must be taken in the month of the comp.... it is your choice to do it your way.... If you win you can set the rule that it must be taken in the month but until then why not just congratulate a fellow cacher on his great picture instead of your insulting post.

I was the judge.. I said old pics were OK in an earlier post... complain to me, don't demean a great pic just because you didn't win

Grow up and play the game it's supposed to be fun

I have nothing against the winning photo; it's a good pic. Just a pity that your choice of rules meant that this month's competition was an archive-mining exercise for many. Never mind, Dave, setting the rules doesn't always work out as one might hope - better luck next time (if I've not frightened you off). Cheers.

How about couch potato for a theme, then we really won't have to leave the house, only take a picture of our computers whilst doing a German virtual cache...... :P:lol:

Whilst you are wrong about everything else (now and in the past, future and in all parallel universes for all time ... trust me, I've done the calculations), I've got to admire this suggestion - well played :anibad:

One problem... I didn't set them I copied them from the month before ... and when it's your turn to judge, good luck with proving when they were taken.... All anyone needs to do is log a DNF on a cache nearby during the month or do a maintenance visit on one of their own caches if they really want to dig out an old pic to enter

This comp is getting less and less pictures each month and more rules means there will be even less Keep it simple and FUN
