Private cashes open to public April 20th only

Logan Landing

Recommended Posts

This was a sincere effort to introduce new ones to geo-caching as well as to offer geo cachers in the area to explore wooded land and find new caches. The gate is open, there is no need to interact with employees, no sales pitches. Just pick up the coordinates and you are on your way. A day of food, music and fun as a thank you for our community.

If you are interested, please PM us, if you are not, why waste your time flaming? When life squeezes a person, out from that person comes what is inside.

Below is a list of guidelines, thank you to the user below. This posting does not infringe on these.

Commercial geocaches are disallowed.

Cache listings perceived as commercial will not be published. A commercial cache listing has one or more of the following characteristics:

It has overtones of advertising, marketing or promotion.

It suggests or requires that the finder go inside a business, interact with employees and/or purchase a product or service.

It contains links to businesses, agencies, commercial advertisers, charities, or political or social agendas.

It contains the logo of a business or organization, including non-profit organizations.

It contains the name of a business or commercial product.

These caches have been set by campers in the park who wish to share them with the public on this day. This is the only day the park is open to the public.

How is this cache a "Private Cache"? You appear to have signed up for an account today, the cache you reference is a Traditional (non-PMO) cache placed 2 weeks ago. There are no others within the imediate area of the cache you reference. Please explain....

We are hoping to drum up some interest in caching by opening our private caches up to the public for one day only. We have 6 private caches here. This is a gated community but we are having a spring festival that is open to the public on Saturday April 20th only.

How to find it?

Look for the cache entitled Camp 'n Boat here in Alabama. It will take you to our entrance and a public cache.

http://coord.info/GC48NV6

We have been looking for cachers to visit us for our spring festival. We would love to have a table or booth set up at the festival to get more people involved. We tried to contact a couple of local groups but none have returned emails.

Your private caches would need to be reviewed before they could be posted publicly by Groundspeak.

A one-day-only cache would not pass the review process.

There seems to be a whiff of commercialism as well.

The Guidelines are here:

http://www.geocaching.com/about/guidelines.aspx

The Help Center also has extensive articles about placing caches and the review process:

It doesn't matter if the cache is temporary or not. If it's in a gated community, it's not actually accessible for the average geocacher.

Were they even placed with the permission of whoever runs the place? I'm pretty sure that to the paranoid people who run a gated community, a cache would seem a security hazard.

Sounds like the OP is the owner of the RV resort, so I'm guessing he has granted permission.

I'm still stumped as to why a gated RV park would have caches at all?

This sounds like pure commercialism, trying bring the public in for a sales pitch.

Oh, sorry...a "spring festival".

The cache in the OP is a publicly accessible, 24/7, 365 cache. The rest of the caches in the park have been set offline by campers who have agreed to let these be hunted by the general public on a specific day. No commercialism, no sales pitch, no employees. Folks like you and me, nothing "upper" about them except they are good people. I sincerely hope the rude comments above get removed before these hard working people see them. Shame on those of you who are so quick to flame.

What you perceive as rude comments, I don't believe were intended as being rude. Be aware that there are some post things to elicit "flaming" responses, and those are quite common occurrences here in these forums.

What you see here, are folks that have long practiced the rules (guidelines) of geocaching.com. One of those guidelines specifically address "permanency" issues regarding cache placement. In other words, there is no such thing (as far as geocaching is concerned) as listing a temporary cache, much less a one-day placement.

Those posts are simply a knee-jerk reaction to what you posted. No, I am not calling those posting such as being jerks -- I looked at and read through your post (before there were any responses), and even checked the maps of your area to see what caches were listed -- but I did not respond. I too, felt a knee-jerk after reading it. I merely bit my tongue and moved along -- a rare occurrence.

You really must consider that we deal with private property issues all the time. It pretty much is our creed to uphold the ideals of private property ownership as sacrosanct. Inasmuch as you have and reside in a gated community, and now invite geocachers in to run "willy-nilly" about the area, it does kind of have an odoriferous quality about it -- at least, from our point of view.

I am not saying that your intentions are other than honorable, not at all. It is the fact that your park is open to the public for only one day. As such, the invite to go geocaching therein, cannot be supported by this site. Many, as you so noted, may well be repulsed by such an invite. Many, many times before, such invites have shown such to be little more than promotions or commercialism. Consider if you will, how these folks should react after hearing/seeing so many similar invites before.

Edit to add: Most likely, the forum moderators will not edit out the "flames", as nothing to this point has violated any of the rules of these forums, that I can see. It remains as an open discussion.

You may, if you so desire request this topic be closed, making it inaccessible for further postings, but it will probably remain open for viewing.

Sorry you didn't hear from the local Geocaching organizations. I think the best thing to do would have been to post in local forums. It's pretty late for getting the word out right now.

From YOUR website.......(bolding added)

Loaded with comforts and amenities, Logan Landing is a private, gated community with a pool, clubhouse, beach area, boat ramp and dock and much more, including a full time resident manager. You can also enjoy our private fishing lake and our canoes and paddle boats.

I noticed you edited your original post. Your citing of the GS guidelines does not change the appearance of the commercial nature of your "opening of the gates" to the local geocachers.

Thank you for those positive, helpful comments, those of you who chose the peaceable, upbuilding road. It makes good sense to lock this topic, I will ask the mods to do this. We are trying to work within the confines of a system as we can, we cannot do more than that. What benefit comes from ascribing negative comments to effort? Truly peaceable people would celebrate the effort, not discourage or condescend.

This event WILL continue, those who wish to come and enjoy the festivities may come with no strings attached. The rest can stay home and read about caches found and fun from their couch.

Locking this would be unfortunate as 1> the comments have been on topic 2. informative and 3. not rude.

Trying to bypass guidelines is bad enough however trying to do it on the website that set up said guidelines seems somehow much worse (i.e. rude). The comments posted are simply those taking you OP at face value and commenting.

Good job (some of you)fellas, I asked the little girl who works in the office to get this out here so that everyone interested could enjoy a few hours of hunting new caches. Her brand new exposure to our game and to the site geocaching.com is this cyclic argument. I could not believe it when she told me what was happening till I saw it with my own two eyes. To the guys who think this is a commercial event, that some pinstriped fat man chomping on a cigar is squeezing the last few dollars from your children is behind this, you are wrong. EVERYONE of those who placed a cache for the personal enjoyment of the game is a registered user, some going back to 2003.

Did those of you who flamed, oh yeah.., flamed(although the respondent who does not think it is flaming is very eloquent) this notice the moderator within this topic? If this was an unsanctioned event, why can you still see it, read it and flame it? When you state that this event is breaking rules, but the mods do not act, who is the one with egg on his face? Everything you state without an action is moot. The moderators know their job, do you attempt to train them? Arrogant.

What rules is this event breaking? Bring it before the mods, not in this topic. They will make the necessary adjustments. Till then the Ignore feature on this site is getting a work out, it is very functional.

Sam, please don't make it worse by claiming your wife Suzanne is just some girl from the office (that you manage) who never heard of geocaching before.

Thanks for adding that bit of pertinent information, NJ Admin.

It's interesting how the very basic Guidelines have been ignored by the OP and the person who has placed the cache in all this discussion.

A note to the OP: completely editing your post(s) after they have been quoted is an exercise in futility.

A person with no experience with geocaching, apparently no attempt to experience it, is accusing other folks of not being cachers?

It is true, that little girl in the office is my wife, of 24 years. A beautiful girl with a muscle disease, which is why she cannot geocache, or hike, or walk from the parking lot to the store without a cane. Manage? Uhm, no. I am not smart enough to do what she does, she puts me on the title because she loves me. I clean toilets and rake leaves. So ok, I get defensive, it felt like she was being attacked, I'll take a mulligan on the above gentlemen. We are each of us responsible for our own score card to the Great Official in the sky.

Geocache guidelines firmly in place, event still on going ;) a win-win for all involved. Another cache was hid, I am going to look for it tonight. Yesterday I lost my cart for about half an hour walking into the woods and not marking where I parked.., AND a hubcap. Ron found it for me when he and Scott hid the last cache.
