Geocaching as an online dating service??

Any developments with this potential love story?  Be sure to take her to an active cache.  If you get her out in the woods and can't find it, she might start to question the motives of the men she's meeting.  :)

Lol..no, nothing to report there. We talked a bit after the initial meeting on the phone, and it turns out she had some real issues with the fact that I frequently go caching on SUNDAY. Welcome to Utah, I guess. Just a different brand of religion, if you ask me.

I always go caching on Sunday. Perhaps that's part of my problem. :)

Quiet day when everyone else is at church is a perfect time to go caching. Things are pretty quiet around here on Sundays, too. Did you meet her at a church dance?

Sign up for a 5k race. Lots of active, adventurous women looking for active, adventurous men. :)

So how come you never gave me this tip before?

Jamie

You lookin for a date, Darlin? What happened to your hiking buddy? When I told you I was doing the races, you never appeared interested in tagging along. Given your financial situation (as noted on another thread) the races would be the place for you to go. Free food and drink. You're intrigued now, aren't you? :)

I might have to do that...a 5k is what, three miles? A little pain in the name of love might be just what I need. What could be more romantic than a bunch of gatorade-swilling, sweaty singles? Hmm...sounds a bit like most of the dances I don't go to anymore.... B)

You could also take a dance CLASS instead of going to these dances. I'd love to see a few men in my tap class. However, the other women in my class are not the kind who would be involved in geocaching. This could be just a 'southern belle' problem, though. These gals can be pretty hoity-toity sometimes. I haven't met many friends down here who are game for a weekend camping trip. Then again, my Wisconsin friends don't like it either. Hmm....maybe I need new friends!

I think that a lot of men expect women to jump at the chance to geocache(and I do believe that everyone should try new things!), but they aren't willing to find out the other interests of the women. I think a lot of men want to meet a woman who isn't afraid to get a little dirty, but they turn their noses down at trying something the woman is interested in or anything less 'manly'.

Now, I have mentioned geocaching to some people I work with (men), and they looked at me like I am crazzzyyy. I feel sorry for them. They should find their inner-child and take their kids on a treasure hunt. Memphis lacks exciting caches, but chances are, you have a lot more scenic beauty than we have down here, so I'm surprised you don't have more women taking part. They have no idea what they are missing. Pack some wine and glasses next time you have a cache-date and sit down to enjoy the view. She'll appreciate that you're creating a 'moment'.....as long as it's not on Sunday, of course.

THAT, my friends, is what is wrong with most men . . . they want to meet naughty bad-girls. Why do you think Mopar was initially interested in me? He thought I was a 'ho . . .

 Now he knows the truth

Happy caching and stuff! B)

Actually Maliberry has been pretty accurate here on ways to meet women. Take dance classes, I reccommend ballroom or Latin and bringing wine, cheese, and glasses when you go Geocaching with a woman is a great idea.

I think she needs to start writing a column for Today's Cacher, Ask Mailberry.

I'm flattered you like my ideas. Thank you.

I wouldn't worry about not having a partner before signing up for these classes. There will likely be a single woman in there to be paired with, and, if not, the couples will run straight to their single friends and tell them about the eligible male taking a DANCE class. They will flock to meet this man who isn't afraid to learn something new. You'll have plenty to pick from, and you'll get to dance with all of them.

As far as wine and cheese, great idea. I wouldn't bring music unless you're with someone you know very well or it will appear too much like a geo-seduction. Someone you don't know as well might react better to the comfortable 'quiet' of the scenery. Oh, and find a scenic cache. Don't take her to a garbage dump to look for a micro. I like the game, but, those, I could do without.

We've all had moments where we find ourselves in places so beautiful, so amazing that you know this is what heaven must be like, and you feel empowered and able to conquer anything that comes your way, a place that feels like a secret and only one you could share with someone who can appreciate it just as much as you. Just find someone who can appreciate it. If you're a Sunday cacher, tell her when she is through with her church service, you will take her to appreciate God's creation. Who could possibly argue with that?!

Celebrating with Moho's Bro

In keeping with how we met, we spent yesterday on a five mile hike to do a really great cache.

We have done 367 caches together in 15 states since we've been together. Looking forward to doing many more and enjoying many more wonderful experiences as a couple.

:) Happy caching and stuff! Lots and lots of stuff! :(

I'm using various online dating sites...anotehr way to meet people. there is one particular lady I'm in contact with. Told her about geocaching and she's very excited about it. She also likes to do outdoor stuff like camping and fishing. We've not met yet, but definitely will before too long. Online dating sites aren't a sure thing...haven't actually met anyone yet,but I've been on this only since December, but have met several ladies online. So it's another option to consider.

Okay, time to put in an explanation of the wings and beer comment above....

I just started geocaching in July with a borrowed GPS and an Idiot's Guide to lead the way. At first, I would automatically print out the encrypted hints and hope for the best. After about three weeks into it, I came to a certain cache locally that stumped me twice, so I sent a note off to the owner begging for mercy. When I didn't hear back from them, I sent a note off to another cacher that had found it, CTTrampers. He replied with a welcome to the game and a hint that helped me find that micro in the end. He also, after a couple of exchanges via email, encouraged me to come to a Wings and Beer night and meet the other geocachers in the area. I like wings and beer and was curious to see what sorts of people were involved in this game, so I went. As luck would have it, I met he, his wife, and baby in the parking lot and we walked in together. They in turn introduced me to the only other cacher there yet, Barefoot. I had a new TB to release that night, a yellow kayak that wants to see lots of paddling destinations, and when I put it on the table Barefoot scooped it up and said he was taking it. Turns out that he's a paddler too, so that was a great find for my kayak. The whole group was very friendly and welcoming, and I left there with a positive feeling about this new community I had met.

I started going into ClayJar's chat and lo and behold, there was Barefoot again. We exchanged some emails, spent some time chatting about caching and getting to know each other and came up with a plan to hook up for a day of caching at Selden Neck on Labor Day, Sept. 6.

We both work in jobs where holidays off are unusual, and this was one of those rare days. The plan was to get as many of the caches on the island as we could before darkness and then grab a bite to eat. The sun was just lighting up the mist rising from the river at 7 AM when I pulled in to the launch area to find Barefoot there already. We had a grand time paddling around the island, slipping and sliding in knee deep mud, scratching the heck out of the tops of my feet because I opted to wear Teva's (stupid decision, by the way), and scrambling up and down and around the island. We found all 12 by mid afternoon and were sitting down to one of his homebrews and discussing the best plan of attack to get back across the CT River when another caching pair showed up. We had a nice chat with them and headed back out onto the water. Again, our good friend Karma was with us and there were no cabin cruisers out to mow us down in the few minutes it took to get across the channel. We loaded up our boats on our trucks and decided that since the day was still sunny and warm, that we'd head up to Gillette Castle and try for the two there, then go get some eats. We found one of them, but not the other. By then we were tired, hungry, and thirsty so it was time to go find some sustenance. We made plans to hook up for the Hammonasset event to ferry our own boats to the launch and take out site and went off to our respective towns 45 miles apart.

We spent the Saturday at Hammonasset hunting out as many caches as possible (17?) before ending up on the beach at 1:30 in the morning to see the tribute in light from the World Trade Center - 100 plus miles away. As the saying goes - the rest is history.

We're having a grand time together, thanks to a micro in Westport and a Wings and Beer night! ;) Now you have to get him to tell his version..... <_<

This scenario sounds somewhat familiar . . . other than the TB exchange at a Wings and Beer night, that's pretty much how Mopar and I got together.

It's that island . . . I know it is!! ;)

Good for you!

I can't actually run 5k. I've tried a couple of times. Is that a negative?

Sign up, show up, and walk the 5k. Then sign up for another one, show up, and walk again. Keep doing it. Even if you can't run it, at least you're out there doing it. I can't run the entire thing either. Yet.

I've never actually "met" anyone on a 5K walk/run. I'm too shy. I could probably meet somebody at a dance class, but I don't really have any desire to go to a dance class.

I've been very shy all of my life, so I really do know how you feel. I moved away from everyone and everything, and then landed in a career where I'm forced to meet new people every day. I have learned how to be professionally-friendly in situations where I might feel shy, and it keeps me from looking mad, stuck-up, unfriendly, uninterested, bored, withdrawn...etc. People have always asked me "what's wrong, why are you so sad", and it made me feel like I belonged in a Zoloft commercial. I am not unfriendly or bored or uninterested, etc. I'm just a little shy and trying to blend. I'm used to doing everything by myself, but if it's something new, I won't do it alone because I feel awkward. I felt so awkward at last year's geo-wing-thing that I didn't go back this year. I wanted to go and didn't. I knew I'd be too shy to join a conversation, and poor JamieZ would be stuck babysitting me all night. He was one of the few who talked to me last year, and I think that was just because I was his ride home. :P haha.

You need to step out of your box and do a few things you don't think you'd like. You might actually enjoy yourself. That might not be a dance class, but try some new things. I certainly had no interest in going to the "car show", but I had a FANTASTIC time. Who knew I'd enjoy that?! I didn't want to go, but I did anyway and I had a great time. I didn't think I'd get into the book festival that I (with a friend) went to yesterday, either, but I learned so much listening to the authors' presentations, that I'm going back today. I don't know one author from another, but I now know the four who signed my books yesterday. There's a speaker today that I'm certain I'll learn something from, and none of my friends are able to come with so I'm going alone to hear it. Things like this are easy to go to because you can sit and listen without having to talk.

Pick up a community news flyer and find out about some of the events going on near you and try something new once a month. You might look inside and have no desire to go to any of them, but if you do what you've always done, you'll get what you've always gotten. Be open to new things! Even if you don't meet someone nice (and I think you probably will), at least you'll be working on the shy thing. As far as the 5k walks, keep doing them for the cardiovascular benefit, and eventually, you'll become a familiar face to the others, and maybe they will be the ones to start the conversation. Beg a friend to go with a few times until you become familiar with it. Maybe they will discover a new interest, as well!

I don't really like those 5k things. I can do that geocaching. I do occasionally see people hiking, but they usually just say "hi" and walk off.

Once again Maliberry its the nail on the head or this case finds the benchmark. Go out and try activities you have never done before, there is always someone willing to help you out. When getting involved in other groups it will take a couple of times beofre the regular members adjust to you, part of that depends on how outgoing you are.

If you get involved in a new activity, offer to help plan their next function, its a great way to meet the other members by being active instead of lurking.

I'm telling you Today's Cacher should start an "Ask Maliberry" column.

Happy caching and stuff!

It's not a problem at all.

I never dated prissy girly-girls. A woman can be feminine without being prissy.

I expect women to get dirty, and to kill their own dadgum spiders :D

Nothing's worse than camping with a woman who goes ballistic every time something natural touches her... ack the spider! ack the mouse! ack the snake! ack mud!

I don't allow my nieces to be prissy. So when I visit, I catch snakes and stuff for them. When they visit me, they're encouraged to go play in the dirt/whatever. I'll buy 'em fishing rods before Barbies :o It's a double bonus for me because I get to see them loving the outdoors AND I don't have to clean 'em up after because they aren't mine.

I like to load 'em up with sugar before sending them home too, but that's another story.

It's so wonderful to hear all these happy stories!

Here's a tip: Don't go into any activity looking for that someone. Just go to make more friends. If something is to develop it will be a lot better if it stems from friendship based on common interests than on two people looking for love/companionship.

There's a developing geo-romance happening in the Chicago area.  HMMM...Wonder who they are??

Could it be Dairy & SemperFiWags? <_<

Heheheh. Sorry I'm so late coming in to the conversation, but since I never really read this forum, I missed this whole saga. I knew of Mopar and Geo Ho, but never read the juicy details.

SemperFiWags is FAR to flighty to settle down yet. Every stereotypical blonde joke you've ever heard could cover her personality. At 9 months, she's just not ready to settle down yet.

As for keeping this thread on topic: congrats to Mopar and Geo Ho. It seems a rare thing to keep relationships more than a year these days (how unfortunate). You have a jewel there.

I'm purposefully not saying who is the jewel and who has the jewel.
