it was in a zip lock bag and tucked into a wooden sign.

Usually, a Geocache is a somewhat sturdy container, but not always. You may have found an Official Geocache! The coin is likely a Geocoin, a Trackable item. You can log it.

Whoever's coin it is, they've been wondering what happened to it (and they considered it lost forever if they marked it Missing). You'll really make somebody's day by making a Note or Retrieve log for that coin. You may then move the coin along to another cache, or put it back, or ask the owner what they'd like (by email or, even better, in the log if possible).

After a coin is marked "Missing", the log options are limited. If you want to log it but have trouble, just ask.

Just to clarify, you didn't take the whole cache, did you? The coin is meant to be taken from the cache and moved to another cache (not kept)...the "container" (ziploc bag....I use the term loosely 😒) and log sheet should be re-hidden as found after signing the log.

I only ask because sometimes when a non-cacher stumbles across a cache by accident they sometimes misunderstand the game and take the whole cache.

If you only have the coin, you can go here...

...and use the tracking code marked on the coin to log it as Retrieved from that cache, and move it along to another cache.

Glad to have you aboard (accidentally or not)!
