Lambbear
Newbie here my question is How common is it to not find a cache, we are new to this but we have not found 3 out of 10 we looked high and low reread the glues logs hints and we either missed it or it was not there is this common or is it just us thanks [] Quote Link to comment
Apes77
I'm a newbie here too. I just found my 19th. Today we searched for seven and of those we found four. It's hard to know exactly what I'm looking for sometimes. It can be really tricky at first to get your "geoSENCE". I ALWAYS ALWAYS read the logs from the beginning to see what others say and I pick up on clues this way. Remember things aren't always as they seem, look up and look down, check in sewer grates, could be under a lamp post, could be a fake sprinkler head or even a fake outlet cover. Good luck! +Panther&Pine
We're at around 10%. Some of those caches are really buggers to find. Keep looking you'll learn the standard hide methods in your area. Quote Link to comment
cerberus1
It might simply be new to the hobby and yes, they could very well be missing. You didn't supply the difficulty and terrain ratings. So far, you're ratio is great. There's so many hide styles, you're bound to miss a few. - And you'll find the longer you're playing, the harder it is to find the "easy" ones. Quote Link to comment
Team Bostradamus
I'm new to caching too, I just started a month ago and couldn't find my first three in a row... after I read through previous logs on nearby caches I went after the ones that I knew were recently found and still there.. two of my first three were actually missing, the third I just went back and found tonight, after I got more experience about what to look for.. Don't get discouraged, DNF's are gonna happen alot... Good Luck and Happy Caching!! Quote Link to comment
The_Incredibles_
A 10-20% DNF rate is about average. Don't worry, caching gets easier with time. I still remember our 3rd find. It was a pill bottle in a stump (the only stump there) and it took 4 of us 1/2 hour to find. Edited March 8, 2013 by The_Incredibles_ Quote Link to comment
Lambbear
thanks for the information im glad it is not just me [] we have found some really interesting ones so far and it has been really fun we do alot of travel so its is something to do in our off time thanks again Quote Link to comment
steben6
I agree with the previous posts. At the beginning, it can be really tough to know what you are looking for. There will be DNFs. The more experience you have, the easier they become. You will someday find a really unique, clever, tough hide that you've never seen before - but the next time you search for one like it, you will know! Don't get discouraged!! Read all the logs and decrypt the hints for some help. If you do DNF one, you can always email the CO and ask for help. Most COs are more than willing to help out and can give you some useful advice. You will develop a geosense the longer you do it. Happy Caching! Quote Link to comment
Chief301
1. 3 out of 10 is a pretty good average for a newbie. I've been doing this for a couple of years now and I also have about a 10-20% DNF rate. 2. Those lamp post skirts lift up 😄 Quote Link to comment
T.D.M.22
I've been caching for a little over a year. I went on a 3 day trip to see some family, and found a whole one cache. Of course caching in Central-Northern Alberta in the winter isn't a great idea. You will have good days and bad days, don't worry. Quote Link to comment
FunnyNose
I'm up to 981 DNFs which is slightly over 8% for me. Quote Link to comment
The_Incredibles_
I'm at just over 10% and I haven't logged them all. Quote Link to comment
*GeoPunx*
I have been caching for about four months. My DNF % is about 8.5 right now. 5 of my DNF's were actually not there. I agree that when first starting out; it can be a bit difficult until you start to realize the types of containers people use and 'typical' hiding spots. Keep it up! +StarBrand
I don't find about 1 in 8 these days. Almost 70% of those get found by somebody else later on. The rest are really missing. I don't let it bother me. Quote Link to comment
SoonerCardsFan
Usually I average about 90% or better found. Then there are days like last Saturday that I only found 6 out of 20. Quote Link to comment
Lambbear
Thanks for the replys you all make me feel much better, we went yesterday and found 9 out of 10 so we are getting better I guess we found a super small one so we are happier now Quote Link to comment
murrayegger
DNF 51 Found 244 I would say that you are just fine. I found very successfully at the start since I was usually going after ammo cans in the woods. With urban caches I have had to rethink my strategy a bit. Also sometimes the caches could be missing.
