Is There Something Similar For US?

Looking at recent profiles, and wondering if we have something similar to this link for the US caches? or if anyone knows how to create one?

Groundspeak needs to do something like this for Challenge caches (provide badges the folks can add to their profile - then remove the requirement that Challenge caches cannot be logged even if found unless you complete the challenge requirements).

IMHO those are not pretty and I would not want them. But the concept is very similar to this http://badgegen.com/ which runs through GSAK. I have them on my profile.

There's also a thread for discussing something like this in the Feature Discussions and Suggestions forum here.

Word of the Central Ontario Geocachers badges has made it all the way down to Texas, eh? :D I'm actually American, but live pretty close to them, so I knew about that webpage, and have seen them on many of my "neighbors" profiles. I always love the first sentence on that web page:

Napoleon once said, "With a handful of ribbons I can conquer all of Europe" .. although he likely said it in French...

To answer the question, no, I am not aware of any other Geocaching organization who has made such awards for putting in your profile. Maybe you could make American Specific ones yourself? Why not join, and ask at their forums if you can copy the concept? Maybe even just re-working the HTML a little bit, with permission, of course. It does not look like a particularly complex web page.

EDIT: Dang, posting the same time as Pup Patrol. I think his answer is much simpler, and straight to the point.

I still have problems with gsak, leaving it up to my other 2/3rds to figure out.

- But those centralon thingys seem military-like to me and (I personally) don't care for the resemblance to military honors worn on uniforms.

Badgegens and similar appear more "everbody" friendly.

I thought the only reason people used them was so others would time-out trying to view their profiles.

Central Ontario Geocachers.

They are medals, not badges.

Just a fun project for our local group, never intended to be picked apart and criticized by the international crowd.

If you don't like them, then it's no big deal, eh?

I hope to check out the fourm this afternoon, and talk to how it was done, I personally think its a good concept and I think many cachers will agree!

It was brought into these forums and I simply gave an opinion.

Many who were in the military have "campaign ribbons" and maybe a few medals (not badges).

- And some may think it's not that big a deal. I do.

stats are fun :-)

more stats are more fun.

it motivates us to find more, do more, see more,

we use badgegen, but needed to ask a pro to set it up

it is not easy to figure out from scratch your self,

so if that is what you like too ? ask a friend for setup help :-)

see my profile if you like to see how it can be done too.

Don't take this as a criticism of the medals because I'm generally in favor of some sort of virtual badge/medal but I don't think the COG medals are a good model for such a feature. As you suggest, they're just a fun project for the local geocaching community and it's pretty evident that is that case from looking over the list of medals available. I'm not just talking about some of the specific local caches listed that are located in Central Ontario. Some of numbers based medals can be reasonably be obtained (i.e. 100 caches in a day) based on the geocaching environment in central Ontario. Those numbers would never work on a global scale (which, if GS implemented some thing like this, it should), where in many places finding 100 caches in a years would be effectively impossible without some significant travel. IHMO, if GS implements some sort of virtual award system it should be as equitable as possible and not just for those that have the luxury of living in a place with a cache dense environment.

Not too many people know about project-GC yet, but I think it will go on to be very popular. I did not know about them having stats for your profile yet, thanks! It needs some work though. Look at my profile. The very last thing "these didn't make the list" got cut off. And if you try any of the tabs at the top of the statistics HTML output, they don't work, they take you to his website. And none of the links for caches work either, they again take you to his website.

I haven't played with it too much yet, but there is a new free GSAK type program written by an author from the Czech Repubic, Geoget Like Project-GC, it is fully authorized to use the most holy, highly guarded, Geocaching.com API. Czech it out, pun intended.

That's due to limitations on Groundspeak's side of things(I think). If you don't want an automatically updating image of your stats then you need to download the static html file provided and all links/tabs should work fine without being redirected.

The second link has badges that are showier. The first link has elegant ones that could be made from cloth to be sewn onto a jacket, or made into medallions to be worn on the front of a shirt like a US military general! B)

Edit: Those Canadian badges are so fantastically cool I may move to Canada just to earn them!

OK, I have the static stats from Project GC in my profile now. Works good, all the links and tabs work too. I've got stinkin' badges!! I don't really care about stinkin' badges, but here you see you can get GSAK style badges from the much easier to figure out than GSAK project GC. Oh I have a blue belt too, although I have no clue what that means.

Oh, I found this on the bottom of the badge page on the Project GC statistics:

BadgeGen are implemented with kind permission from Kyle, the creator of BadgeGen, all credits should go to him.

Not all of the original badges have been implemented due to technical limitations.

The ones that currently are missing are:

The Benchmarker, The Waymarker, The Night-Owl, The Scuba-Cacher, The Travel Bug, The Coin Collector and the Flag Badges.

Wow... Pretty amazing stats... Mine are lame compared ;)

The belt is also relevant to your stats and is calculated by certain things you have done...

You can see my stats at my geocaching.com user profile.. It is an example of what it looks like on your profile. If you have your stats uploaded to your gc profile, you can click on 'more belt info' or more badge info or something like that. It will show what you need to get up to the next level, and what you need to get up to the next belt. I can't attach a photo as I'm on the ipad ATM, but check it out if you like...
