The pocket query page can be used for that as well.  The countries are in a select list.  Here is the complete list with the option elements showing the country ID:

My country isn't on that list. As home of the game, you'd think it would be there.

Yes, you´re right. But it seems not much appealing to me to waste at least half a day on the road to find a random cache. And so far I haven´t found a good enough reason to visit Luxemburg. Any suggestions? :)

I spent about 10 days in Belgium a couple of months ago and had the weekend free in between meetings so I booked a hotel in Ettelbruck for one night and took the train there and back.  My reason was simply that I wanted to find a few caches in Luxembourg.  I also got to stay in a nice hotel, have a nice dinner, and see a little bit of a country I had not previously visited.  I'm glad I chose Ettelbruck as the train wasn't running between it and Luxembourg City and they were putting everyone on a bus.

I do not see a country ID of 1 or 2 on that list.

According to this 2010 post, 1 is "unknown," 2 is the USA.  So much for "we're number one," I guess.

(I think I've suggested that the USA be added to the list of countries for PQ purposes, but so far no dice.)

I am curious about the Danube river cruise.  Although I've found some in Germany (on three different visits) and have 16 European countries (and I don't live in Europe), I don't have any in Eastern Europe.  It looks like that cruise visits 7 European countries I have not visited.

Hi - yes, it was excellent - started in Passau, Germany, and went down to the mouth of the Danube on the Black Sea. Not a lot of time for caching though! I only just managed to get one in Bulgaria with just 20 minutes to go before we needed to get back to the ship.

Just finished booking a new trip... Not a new country to visit but a new one to find caches. So country 28 is just around the corner and we still haven't been in Luxembourg yet...

As far as I know, it's never been possible to create a PQ with the USA as the country, and instead requires one to multi-select all of the US States in the States select list.   Since a PQ is limited to 1000 results it doesn't make a lot of sense to create a PQ with the U.S. as the region.

That would depend on what other filters you were using in your PQ. For example, I wouldn't think there'd be too many caches in the whole USA with both the tree-climbing and scuba gear required attributes set.

And when looking for caches places in specific months, it can be helpful to be able to run that search through a PQ.

Instead, cachers have to run an Advanced Search of the entire US country, then order by Placed Date, then scroll to find the specific month(s) they want, then put those in a List, then map that single List.  OR use Project-GC.

I supposed one could construct criteria which reduced the results to less than 1000 caches.   It's too bad that the main search page doesn't have Attributes or Placed Date as filters.

And yet the new search allows one to filter results using just "United States" and not specifying states.  See, e.g.:

17 results for US caches containing the word "herp"
4 results for US caches containing the word "derp"
108 results for webcam caches in the USA

So, no, pocket queries could do this just fine.  They just don't.

Since the "new" search allows one to set the United States as a region I would prefer to see attributes and other filters available in a PQ added to the new search rather than using two different forms for querying the same data.

Geocaching lists Gibraltar as a separate country for example. I'm not sure what the status of the Channel Islands, Isle of Man and Faroes are - or whether Kosovo is counted. Those sorts of places could easily push things up to the 54.

Kosovo is not counted... yet.  Well I'm hopeful when I say yet.  I only found 1 cache in Serbia and it was a token visit.  But I really enjoyed Kosovo and the few cache finds I got there.  Including muggling a group of KFOR soldiers from Germany at a cache - that was super funny: Pulled up near cache.  Wait while soldiers in uniform walk past the cache... no they're not walking past, they're pausing and hanging about by GZ.... oh I see, they're geocachers, let's muggle them. :)

So 225 countries must be our common goal :)

Unfortunally I am having hard times to add more countries in the moment. Therefore I consoled my self by baging 3 more counties of my State :D

Actually 250 (249 in that list plus USA)

The project-gc caches per area page (https://project-gc.com/Statistics/CachesPerArea?submit=Filter) which shows the number of caches in each country, shows a list of 243 countries (for some reason I thought it was 248 when I last looked) though it might not be showing countries which currently have no caches.   If I have time today I'll compare the lists to see the differences.

Someone smarter than me may confirm... but as I understand the list of countries comes from here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_3166-1

From what I read the GS list was based on the UN Geopolitical ontology which aligns very closely with the ISO-3166 standard.   BTW, I know the person that manages the UN ontology personally and have discussed the possibility of extending it to include 2nd level administrative areas (States, Provinces).

Not making any claims about being smarter than you.

Here are the countries in the official GS list (taken from the select list on the Pocket Query page, which excludes United States, that are not on the project-gc list.

 - Bouvet Island
- Cocos (Keeling) Islands
- Heard Island and McDonald Islands
- Nauru
- Netherlands Antilles
- North Korea
- Sark

The one interesting one on the list is Netherlands Antilles, because although it took awhile, there were once a handful of caches identified as being in Netherlands Antilles but are now either Sint Maarten or Saint Martin.

There is also a cache on what is labeled as Cocos (Keeling) Islands on the map but is listed as being in Western Australia.   There are also 18 caches shown on the map on the island of Sark, but they all are shown as being in Guernsey.

Fine. The GS API currently lists 252 countries (which includes {"id":1,"name":"Unknown"})

With the current cache submission process, is it even possible to create a cache with the country listed as "Unknown"?   What happens if you use the API to return a list of caches with id 1 (unknown) selected.   Although Netherlands Antilles still appears in the PQ country list (and can be selected a s region on the search page),  I don't think it's possible to create a cache with Netherland Antilles as a country.

"Netherlands Antilles" is in the drop-down list for the "country" field for a new listing, and can be selected. "Unknown" is also in that list, but if you select it and try to save the listing, you get an error saying "Please select a country".

Try and get out to Petra while there - it's an amazing place, and the oldest cache in Jordan is there (a bit of hike to get to, it's at the far end and several hundred feet up.  We made it during a half day visit, but couldn't see as much of the other sights as we like.  It's a good excuse to go back.).

done petra amazing and yes its an hike to the cache but well worth it

This is addressed in a thread on the project-gc message boards.  I can't get there from work because our net policy has blocked project-gc, but it's there.  (It's actually something I posted to answer someone's question, ironically.)

I don't see that you've been to Greenland - this I believe is one of the 54 project-GC lists for their Europe map.  So that might be it.  It was 53 until recently; Cyprus I believe is the latest addition.

Petra is amazing! Glad you managed to get there!

I've just booked a new trip, to Åland with a stopover in Helsinki in early May. It's a bit of a nightmare to get there on a budget on such short notice, but after half a day of searching I found the best solution via Frankfurt to Helsinki, and back via Munich. No interesting caches there for me (been there, done that), but at least I can stock up on German candy 😁🤣

I'll also spend some time for work in the south of Germany at the end of May into June, manning (womanning?) an oil rig. As we'll be running tours for interested people I'm considering having an event at the wellsite. Need to run this past my manager to see if this works. And if not: there are still a few caches within walking distance for me, and a beach on a swimming lake 😆

We logged country 28 last week on a 5 day trip to Iceland. We were there pre-geocaching (summer 2001) and now returned to see the northern lights. After 3 trips to see aurora in Tromsø, Norway, we ran out of things to do/see there. Amazing how things have changed in almost 18 years. There were more tourists now than in the summer of 2001 and the major tourist attractions had large restaurants and parking lots. Last time we just drove up to the viewpoints where there were only a few people.

Out of 27 finds, 14 were earthcaches, 3 (short) multis, 3 mysteries, 2 virtuals, 1 letterbox, 1 Wherigo and 3 traditionals.

We drove along the 60 traditionals powertrail but didn't stop at any of them, nor did we bother with the traditional 200m from our hotel.

1 traditional was DNF because the cache was missing but as someone threw down a plastic bag and some paper there were still founds logged. The cache now has 2 NM logs but the CO (from UK) has not been on the website since November 2017 and logged no finds since 2015. Maybe I should add a NA.

I would be hesitant to do this in a foreign country (a blow in, an expression sometimes used here to call non locals; someone who 'blows in' and then by the nature of, 'blows out' again), unless the countryside was thick with geocaches, and although they have geocaches there, I would not describe Iceland as 'thick with caches'. Or at least as I found it in Spring of 2015. (Photograph: May 2015)

I don't remember many large restaurants, but perhaps they have been built since 2015. A lot was closed also then, as there were not many people on the roads. One stretch I drove through the white, only had 28 cars recorded (both directions - one was my car) all day for instance. There were more tourists in the south. An interesting country to visit. Maybe one day I will get another chance to visit when it's green; rather than white, black and brown.

You saw the aurora...I am jealous, as I never saw it.

I'd log a NA. I hate throwdowns regardless of where they are. Most likely a vacation cache with no maintenance plan.

We saw it but it was less spectacular than what we saw in Tromsø, Norway.

We only had one clear evening/night sky during our stay but during the day we had some nice sunny periods. At least it was better than expected.

Nope. The cache was placed in 2004 and has many OM logs up to 2015 but the CO now seems to have left the hobby. I'm sure someone will step in and place a new one as it's near a landmark.

Would it not be better if it were archived and then a new cache placed that will be maintained?

You are presuming a new cache will be placed. In many places that won't happen. Then no cache. You mightn't mind that, but others will.

I found that on 12 May 2015. I remember the statue, but not the cache.

Yes. in 2015 in Tromsø, the aurora lasted several hours and was 360° around us and moving very quickly. In Iceland it lasted about an hour and was rather faint. It was less spectacular than on photographs and to the naked eye looked like a fluorescent cloud with a faint grey/greenish color. On our second trip to Norway we went on a workshop aurora photographing by  a professional photographer. We learned a lot about the needed settings. Settings are RAW format, ISO 2000, f4, 4sec shutterspeed, manual WB... Nikon D7500 + Tokina ATX 2.8 PRO DX 11-16mm. In Tromsø the same setup but camera was D90 and ISO 800.

I think someone will place a new cache there as it is a tourist spot. It would be best if a local placed it (or at least maintains it).

I have the same feeling with many traditionals

We noticed the same in WA driving from Perth to Exmouth. 20 minutes between cars was no exception (in July). Driving back from Monkey Mia to Denham one night (after an aboriginal walking tour) we saw no cars at all except for the police car that came sneaking up on us when we were standing still next to the road shining the car lights into the open spaces next to the road to see the roos and wallabies B).  Friendly guys though but I'm sure we were acting "suspicious".

Same here.  Looks like I never posted the nice photo I got of the statute.  I'd do it now, but my work blocks my photo site.  :P

It's common in Australia away from urban areas on some roads to drive and see few cars. I have just returned from nine days away and there were places we saw few cars and we were not way out west in remote areas either. The Alpine Way was one road with few cars and the Araluen Road was another. A bit sloshy the last one, as there were road works happening on the dirt road.

Thanks.  Which one was that - the B24J Liberator cache on the Majuro Atoll?  If so, yeah that was amazing and well worth the expense and organisation to get there.  I'm currently in Hilo on the Big Island Hawaii at the moment, nearing the end of this trip but it has been super awesome.  Still lots of logs to catch up on (where I was caching on GPS instead of phone due to no data).  Palau was spectacular... just an incredible piece of paradise on earth that I have never seen anywhere else on the planet.  There are colours there in the water that simply do not exist anywhere else on the planet.

And as a result of adding Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Guam, Northen Mariana Islands and Palau to the list, I'm now on 83 countries! :)

Happy caching!

Off on a cruise for our anniversary - Shanghai to Sydney.  Hopefully I will be able to add 3 new countries:  China, Hong Kong and South Korea.

South Korea is on me todo list along with Taiwan - they should be fairly easy for me as I can fly direct to them both, or one then the other. I'd love to do North Korea... does holding an event count? Lol

Unfortunately Hong Kong doesn't have a souvenir, despite there being a lot of geocaches to find there. (Singapore has a souvenir, so don't know why Hong Kong doesn't, and it's not included in a China souvenir either). The others I don't know about. Enjoy your trip.
