Add selected trails to GPS map

There is a group of caches nearby on a system of hiking trails. The trails were added recently to OpenStreetMap but are not on my GPS, since I did the map update a while ago. I would like to lift the trails from openstreetmap and place them as tracklogs into Mapsource so I can export them as traces to my GPS. I understand i can do the whole map update, but that involves re importing maps from half the country. As this has happened to me a few times now I wonder if there's a simple way to get the selected features into my GPS? This is what I have to work with:

Garmin Etrex Vista HCX

Mapsource

I know how to export a tracklog from the GPS to Openstreetmap. I do it all the time. However, the only export option I see from openstreetmap will export the entire map area, not just selected features. also, the export format is not a gpx file, its various permutation of picture files. I believe that would loose the intersection coordinates.

I'm going to send this to the top one more time before I let it die.

I see you as having two options:

1. Download the OSM data for the area you're interested in, and convert it to GPX. I have a feeling this would be fairly difficult and the result could be pretty messy, because the GPX file format just isn't meant to hold this kind of data (interconnected ways, areas, etc.).

2. Update your maps. This would capture any and all updates to the map, rather than just a select few, and would be light years easier than doing option 1.

Is there a reason why you don't want to do a full update?

I would like an option besides a full update because the full update requires me to

1. Request, receive and download the target tiles

2. Upload them to mapsource on my PC

3. Combine the tiles with the topo maps

4. Write the whole mess to the the GPS sim card

The last step usually process over the course of several hours.

I generally go through thr full update process twice a year. Yes, I could do it for a few trails that were recently added, but an alternate process to insert tracks (like the way I update my GPS for trails I added) would provide another, more flexible option.

You might be able to find someone who has done it already. E.g. http://mapas.alternativaslibres.es/downloads.php or http://talkytoaster.info/ukmaps.htm

I regularly add to the map and update my GPS every couple of weeks from Talkytoaster's uk site. But I just checked your profile and it looks like you are in the US, so maybe this site would be suitable: http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/

Yup, that's the site I already use for my full update. Garmin only permits one map file on my GPS data card, so if I were to grab the updated tile I would loose the rest the maps on my GPS.
