broken off hobby knife blade found in cache

We sometimes find WRONG items in caches,

we always look carefully what is in a cache, maybe there is a little tiny micro coin

we dont like to miss..

Today we found with our smallest girl alot of caches,

in one of the supposed to be kids friendly

there was a SHARP hobby knife piece along with all the plastic toys !!

lucky she did not poke arround with her little fingers too much.

We actually thinks a bad person put it in here on purpose to cause harm to small kids !!

see the picture in my log here:

http://coord.info/GLA8JNRJ

--- my log google translated----

sorry it is funny translated, but you get the idea, I think...

we grabbed all FDF caches today, nice tour, good and easy caches in a good area,

Only one child was with us today.

MEGA shock HERE!

we found a piece broken off a stanley knife blade inside the cache!

what the XXX thinks people!

A geocacher looks always thoroughly what is in a cache perhaps there could be a TB or Coin.

when you find some CLEARLY wrong items in a cache,

you MUST take it out and away,

it should be fun and safe for kids to mess around for plastic toys

when they find and open the cache first!

We have obviously fixed this huge error. so children can return here and enjoy themselves without getting injured.

Unfortunately, the 1000kr as Bitten put in the cache, is not here, but we grabbed a nice picture of her funny log text,

see my other picture for that.

we always take bad stuff out,

if we just did it in silence, all people will maybe think it was a nice thing to leave ?!?!

my idea is : if I tell lound and clear what kind of bad things I found and removed

people will maybe see my log and learn and think,

I try to help people understand sharp, pointy items are NOT good !!

just like : food, candy, lighters, fireworks, tampoons, condoms, cigaretes, drugs, pills,

bullets, needles, glass, and so on, just to name a few of the items I found and removed !

I am mostly amazed the previous finder either did not see this ?? left it ?? ignored to remove it ??

Sometimes people just haven't read the guidelines clearly enough. All you can do is remove the objects. You could email the person, if they state clearly that they left the item. Be polite, cite the guidelines, thank them for their consideration. Then, move on.

Also, from time to time, caches are found by muggles. If there is a stash note, it says "If you take something from the cache, please leave something in return" (or something like that). I've been to caches found and logged in the logbook by muggles where they have left cigarettes and knives. All I do is remove them, and keep on caching.

You have found the items in the first quote, yet you still think kids should open and rummage a cache before an adult inspects it? That doesn't make sense.

Good that you removed it! A cacher noted in a find log on one of my caches that they removed a half-used can of skoal (chewing tobacco). You just gotta wonder if it's cachers or muggles that do this.

I found a cache with an unused shotgun shell in it. Needless to say I removed it. Kept it though and ended up getting a 12ga shotgun to use it in :D

The most dangerous thing that I have found in a cache was a loaded mouse trap. What would be painful for me might break a little one's finger. I've also found gay porn.

By the way, my Google Translate came out a bit different. Mine says that you "have obviously rigged this huge roar. so children can return here and enjoy themselves without getting injured". I'm thinking that a huge roar might scare them. :)

I could be a good idea to dump a cache out on a tarp and inspect the contents before grubbing around too much.

Once or twice I have been surprised by live scorpions in the cache. :yikes:

I have no idea how a scorpion gets into an ammo can!

Perhaps it was hiding under the skirt of the lid and fell in when we opened it?

Having found all the items (and more) on OZ2CPU's list (multiple times, and sometimes in combination) I think the real message should be:

Don't let the kids dig through the cache until you have taken out anything dangerous or undesirable.

You can proclaim the message to not put that stuff in there, but there will always be someone who thinks it will be clever to leave things like that.

This thread reminds me of the most dangerous thing I've found in a cache which was a live bullet. Fantastic item to hide especially in the hot Florida sun...I mean, seriously... We of course took it out and properly disposed it.

From time to time, I've found some inappropriate swag. It's funny to think about later. In one case, I found a broken lightbulb, a condom, and a Pocahontas doll dress - what a strange combo!

Just yesterday I found a used shotgun shell in one.

I found an old surgical glove once. When I first opened the box I only saw the tip of one finger poking out and I immediately thought it was a condom...so I overturned the box and realized what it was when everything came out. I'm sure someone thought they were being cute or funny when they put it in there, not realizing how others might perceive it.

Maybe we should make a COMPLEETE list of WRONG stuff we found in caches ??

it could be scary and amusing :-)

maybe even remember to take pictures while you are out there to prove your wierd find ?

by the way : in some contries like mine, even USED ammo is illegal to carry !!

also if it is only ONE.

There is nothing like, sir I just found it in a geocache, and I was on my way to your office with it.

it is the same if you find a bag of drugs, guns, knifes, or such stuff.

We too just found a live bullet in a cache last weekend. I've found matches multiple times, spent ammo, a lighter...that's mostly it for dangerous stuff, luckily no porn....and also luckily that none of it was with my kids present. I just remove it and make note that I removed the items in my log, if only to make aware to the future caches to beware of what they may find, later on.

I checked the picture and that is indeed a snapped off piece of utility/hobby knife. Maybe it was put there with malicious intent. But it's also possible that it ended up there accidentally. You intentionally snap off the end of those blades with a pliers to get to a new edge. Maybe someone snapped that end off and it went flying and ended up in the cache.

At any rate, like the posts above noted, I would never let little ones rummage through a cache container unless I had checked it first.

>Spent ammo, once "spent", is no longer dangerous.

YES.. we all know that.. but still NOT legal to have in your pocket !!

at least not in Denmark, no joke !!

good point !

but this is exactly what 99.99% of all caching families do :-)

kids LOVE to find it, open it, and search it for stuff,

they be quite angry if we pick it up, and check it first,

it is like we open their xmas present for them.

As you can see above, apparently "all" didn't know that and other than you, everyone here (so far) is from the US.

- There are very few States here where spent ammunition is unlawful, but not necessarily illegal and all the exclamation points you can muster doesn't change that fact.

I'm curious, and please don't get me wrong, none of these belong in a cache, and I have removed all of these except brass shell casings. I'm just curious how seeing a bullet or a lighter or a book of matches is going to harm a child. I'd be more concerned about an over-sized sex toy or porn material because that might force a conversation that you weren't prepared for in the middle of a geocaching hike, but a bullet?

... over-sized sex toy ...

You might think it was oversized, but that's regular to some of us

Anyway, I don't think the bullet/lighter/matches issue was specifically to do with children asking questions, but more that they could be dangerous, and are not really suitable in a place where kids might find them unsupervised.

Yes, but the post I was responding to said that she was present and was glad that her children were not.

I understand those items are against guidelines.

And sure, most just take 'em out and forget it.

- But I see this as a parenting issue too...

Common sense dictates kids shouldn't be left unsupervised in the first place.
