New Category Icons

Recommended Posts

You are working hard ;)

Nice the new icons, thank you :D

Agree, they look profi. I have no other idea on my mind, so Lumbricus keep drawing :anibad:

I will, on Monday. Nice that you like them, I know they are not super good, but better than nothing at the moment.

Two other icons I thought a long time are:

Gargoyles: lion_statue.gif -> fa257697-c10d-471b-afe5-9dcec62358a9.gif?rnd=0.08402193

and

Sphinx Statues: sculpture.gif -> 5a00f94b-647d-41c2-a550-9640e826b51d.gif?rnd=0.7954676

and now we will go on with new ones.

Yes I missed good icons for those two categories since years. But I would prefer a sphinx seen from its side not a front view.

I really like the classic style icons made by lumbricus.

Thanks.

I tried a sphinx from the side view, but I couldn't do it well. It looked too bad.

LEGO Sculptures and Models: e8000796-0135-4250-9c55-1d999c289d49.gif?rnd=0.2625849

Looks nice, but IMHO the connection to LEGO is not absolutely clear. It's a good minifig when you know it, but it could also be Waymarkman.

Maybe just some bricks would be more obvious, and the category is looking for something larger than a minifig anyway, isn't it?

Tourist Stamps Photos: fccc5396-ff19-4558-ab7c-03e95e14b6ba.gif?rnd=0.2640039

I have special feelings to Tourist Stamps Photos :anicute: .. as they are like national sport for some people in Slovakia (and Czech Republic). I thought existing icon is fine, isn't it? Or at least it's theme. I drafted my idea quickly (big icon, 24x24 icon, existing icon):

a49de91b-a62f-40cb-9ea9-d78183938a00.gifbbf5d18a-e1ac-47ed-b5ba-d48e664ff9da.gifRealWorldReproduction.gif

Edit: Maybe explanation of slightly different style (shading of "wooden stamp") - it is much more difficult to draw circular shapes just using pixels without any shading. It always looks ragged. Thats why I used shading in the stamp. Angular forms are easier to draw in raw pixels.

Hi Rikitan,

why not, it looks good.

But please create the 24x24 without the Waymark arround it. In my opinion it fits better if its in the square format like the other icons.

I'm looking forward to see this version.

lumbricus

I agree with removing the waymark shape around the picture for the icon. If you compare the ones with the waymark around them, with others that use the entire space, the waymark takes up so much of the valuable space, that the picture ends up being too small to tell what it really is - especially with such an intricate picture used for the Tourist Stamp Photos. Some categories that use a simpler picture might get away with losing space and still be descriptive, but I don't think it works for this category.

As far as the two versions of the Tourist Stamp Photos icon presented by Rikitan, I prefer the one on the left, with the round wooden stamp. I realize it is harder to do round and make it look right, but it looks more like the Tourist Stamps of the submission photos in the category. Nice work with these!

Thank you, so if you like it, I will improve it as per your suggestions.

Auction Houses: ddc7aede-1430-4dbc-a963-1b8aec9e06df.gif?rnd=0.6210749

Why not but please: 3 2 1

Or only at ebay?

I think it's an ebay thing. As in, the time is running down.. 3.. 2.. 1.. Sold!

The live auctions that I've attended go more like this: The bid is $250.. do I hear $275.. $275.. do I hear $260.. $260.. the bid is $250 to bidder #47.. going once.. going twice.. going three times.. sold to bidder #47. So, I would think a physical Auction House would be 1 2 3. But I'm sure most people would be more familiar with the ebay style of auctions.

Either way, I think it's an improvement over the existing icon.

Hi,

some interests in improving the 'USA Historical Markers' icons?

I worked through the first nine:

After much deliberation, ;) moving from left to right, I'd have to say, "Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, and Yes". These are much more descriptive, colorful, and pleasing to the eye! Not to mention, a good deal of work - nice job!

Someone noticed that original (unique) icons are being changed to a slightly different and of poorer quality ones :(

Just now was creating a new waymark and suddenly looked at the icon I thought I had the wrong category, then closed the page and went to open the category again and after some more confusion I realized that the icon had changed.

I hope they do not change any more icons that are originals (unique) that is very confusing.

I agree that icons that are not original (unique) are changed, for example the Historical Markers that are all equal only change the letters (as Lumbricus is doing) or the Benchmarks that also only change the letters and other similar cases, but i do think that the originals (unique) ones should not be changed. :(

Hi razalas,

no need to worry. We did a test run with some icons. The idea is to match the icons. About 1000 icons have the size 24x24 pixel and are without the "grey Waymark" shape. About 80-100 were designed with the grey Waymark shape. For the grid they are scaled from 41x41pixel to the 24x24 pixel. That is the reason that they are very tiny in the grid.

Here is what I'm talking about, 5 examples:

I wrote with Waywizard, he also thinks that they fit better with the existing icons, but we are happy to discuss it here. The old icons are still existing so they could be loaded up again if the community like.

P.S.: @razalas: "...are being changed to...poorer quality ones..." I did my best that they have a great quality, if you look at the examples, are they really of such a poorer quality?

Hi lumbricus, when I said "poorer quality ones" I was referring to the size. Fewer pixels means smaller quality.

...Dude, when do you sleep?:laughing:

The detail of the image is much clearer now. These look great!

Good question! Pixels everywhere around me...

There is a cure for that, but it involves a camera, a GPSr and a long walk...

Of course, if you're OK with all those pixels floating around your head, by all means, keep at it - you're doing great!

Link to post

First of all I must say that you are doing a fantastic job, with pixel-art. Thank you. :D

In my opinion we should keep the original icons, I know they are different but they have the style of the artist who created them.

Also think that we are forgetting that the icons are not only used on the grid, and so this icons compared with the other style even with the "grey Waymark" shape have much more quality (when I say quality I'm not referring to the artistic work but to the number of pixels) as you can see in the images below.
