DDavis84
I just picked up a Garmin eTrex 20 and I am looking for a program that I can load my waypoints, routes, ect onto from my hikes. Also, what are the best maps available? I would prefer free maps but I'm willing to buy if the difference is drastic. I've heard MyDashboard and Basemap in passing, not certain what those are and I'd rather get some backround before I download them onto my computer. Thanks! Quote Link to comment
+unabowler
I like Garmin's BaseCamp pretty well for mapping out routes and such. GSAK is great for customizing and refining pocket query results. Quote Link to comment
+eusty
There are lots of free maps for the Garmin, where are you from? GSAK is a fantastic program, but if you are just using routes and tracks then Basecamp Quote Link to comment
Andronicus
What advantages does BaseCamp have over MapSource? Quote Link to comment
+NanCycle
What advantages does BaseCamp have over MapSource? My understanding, and as I was told by a Garmin CS rep, they're basically comparable products, but MapSource is the old version and BaseCamp is the current version. Quote Link to comment
+EScout
Since your Garmin keeps track and waypoint data in GPX file format, just drag them over to Google Earth. Quote Link to comment
alandb
What advantages does BaseCamp have over MapSource? It supports Garmin's BirdsEye satellite imagery. Quote Link to comment
DDavis84
Thanks for the replies. My main use for the GPS program will be transferring waypoints from hikes and hunts onto topo or aerial maps. Quote Link to comment
+coggins
Thanks for the replies. My main use for the GPS program will be transferring waypoints from hikes and hunts onto topo or aerial maps. They you will want to get BaseCamp. MapSource development has been abandoned by garmin, so any of the new features that your eTrex 20 has/does such as Garmin Custom Maps, Photo Navigation, Adventures, BirdsEye, Full Geocache information etc... are not supported with MapSource. +StarBrand
I use basecamp and Google Earth. Lots of free maps are available for the Garmin units - try gpsfiledepot.com Quote Link to comment
