Cre8chaos69
Total newbie here. I have read about geocaching but have yet to try it. My question is, my son brought home an empty geocache box clearly labeled as a game piece. After expressing my extreme disappointment and telling him what it was, I wanted him to put it back where he found it. Since it was empty, I placed a few things inside it and brought it back to the location that he took it from. After checking the map of the area, I noticed that this location is not charted on the map as a location for a cache. What should I do? Should I leave it there? Since it's no longer on the map, I would assume that no one is looking for it. Quote Link to comment
+T.D.M.22
Leave it there. There are other geocaching websites. It could be one that hasn't been published yet, or it could be part of a mystery, or multi cache, which won't show up om the map. Was there ANYTHING at all identifying it? A GC number, or the owners name? or even a logbook? Quote Link to comment
+The Blorenges
That's rather interesting... It was completely empty? You say it was clearly labelled as a "game piece"... Do you remember seeing any reference GC number on the label - That would help us to identify it. I wonder if it was one that had been muggled? Maybe it was found elsewhere, taken, contents removed - then the empty cache box discarded. MrsB Edited January 16, 2013 by The Blorenges Quote Link to comment
+ngrrfan
It could also be a Premium Member cache, so it is possible that the OP can't see it on the map because they are not a PM. Quote Link to comment

Someone (perhaps a reviewer) will probably be able to tell us if you found an archived container. And maybe someone else can check the other sites to see if it's listed anywhere else. If it isn't, personally, I would retrieve the container so it doesn't end up being geojunk. Quote Link to comment
Cre8chaos69
It was what appeared to be an army type ammunition box and on the side it had a sticker saying it was an official geocaching game piece. It had lines for identifying information but all was blank. There was nothing on the inside but my son had begun storing his own personal items in it but he swears that nothing was in it when he found it. He is a teenage boy though so who knows if he is telling me the truth. Ugh. I put a few random things inside it and we put it back. I guess this makes him a muggle? Quote Link to comment

The address there is 1963 Savannah Highway Charleston, SC 29407. There is a path that leads directly to the greenway and there is a concrete tube there. I could go back there after work and take a picture of it. Quote Link to comment
+redwoodkestrel
Looking at the map there is no cache - PMO or otherwise - listed there. There are also no puzzles or multis in the immediate area, so I read the descriptions of the ones a bit farther out. None of them sound like the one your son found, based on what they say the final cache container is, or based on the fact that they've been found recently (no one saying they're missing). It could be the final stage to a long-distance multi or puzzle, but that's probably less likely. I'm guessing it's a cache that's been archived... in which case it would be nice to either figure out who owned it so they can get their ammo can back, or give the can back to your son son it's not geo-trash. Maybe some long-standing cachers in the area found it when it was active and could provide some insight? Hard to know though. Edited January 16, 2013 by redwoodkestrel Quote Link to comment
+hzoi
Hopefully we can get a reviewer in here that can look through unknowns, multis, archived, and unpublished caches around that area to figure out in which, if any, category this ammo can belongs. Quote Link to comment
Cre8chaos69
I will come back and check to see if anyone has any further info. I will probably swing by there over the weekend to take a pic of it. It will probably be too dark when I get off work to wander on the path. Quote Link to comment
+Need me glasses
Could it be a cache that has not been published yet? I remember reading somewhere on these forums that it is a good idea to place an empty cache first for a few weeks to see if it gets muggled (which I thought was good advice btw) Quote Link to comment
+T.D.M.22
It could be one that's not published yet. I've never heard to put an empty cache out first to see if it gets muggled. If I was to do that I'd put a $2 LnL instead of a $15 ammo can. Plus it could get muggled after a week, month or 3 years. But It is possible. Quote Link to comment
+The_Incredibles_
Being that you found it empty, it was likely muggled. Perhaps it's not even in the original location. My suggestion is to leave a smaller (cheaper) container in it's place with your email address and an explanation of the situation. Keep the ammo can for now. +Cache-witch
I think it might be this archived cache : http://coord.info/GC22ADY Reported muggled (but empty ammo can left there) in June 2011. Cre8chaos69, I'd suggest you contact cache owner bswannie to check. Maybe he will want the ammo can back. If he doesn't, then keep it for when you're ready to place your first cache Thanks for investigating and trying to fix this cache! Quote Link to comment
Cre8chaos69
Thanks to all for your wonderful advice. I will probably pick it up this weekend and hang on to it and attempt to contact bswannie to find out if he wants the ammo can. Thanks again you guys! Quote Link to comment
