Found empty labeled geocache box

Total newbie here. I have read about geocaching but have yet to try it. My question is, my son brought home an empty geocache box clearly labeled as a game piece. After expressing my extreme disappointment and telling him what it was, I wanted him to put it back where he found it. Since it was empty, I placed a few things inside it and brought it back to the location that he took it from. After checking the map of the area, I noticed that this location is not charted on the map as a location for a cache.

What should I do? Should I leave it there? Since it's no longer on the map, I would assume that no one is looking for it.

That's rather interesting...

It was completely empty? You say it was clearly labelled as a "game piece"... Do you remember seeing any reference GC number on the label - That would help us to identify it.

I wonder if it was one that had been muggled? Maybe it was found elsewhere, taken, contents removed - then the empty cache box discarded.

Good of you to be so caring.

Sounds like it may have been archived. Can you give us the location? Someone (perhaps a reviewer) will probably be able to tell us if you found an archived container. And maybe someone else can check the other sites to see if it's listed anywhere else. If it isn't, personally, I would retrieve the container so it doesn't end up being geojunk.

It was what appeared to be an army type ammunition box and on the side it had a sticker saying it was an official geocaching game piece. It had lines for identifying information but all was blank. There was nothing on the inside but my son had begun storing his own personal items in it but he swears that nothing was in it when he found it. He is a teenage boy though so who knows if he is telling me the truth. Ugh. I put a few random things inside it and we put it back.

I guess this makes him a muggle?

It is located on the West Ashley Greenway behind Triangle Bowling Lanes. The address there is 1963 Savannah Highway Charleston, SC 29407. There is a path that leads directly to the greenway and there is a concrete tube there. I could go back there after work and take a picture of it.

Looking at the map there is no cache - PMO or otherwise - listed there. There are also no puzzles or multis in the immediate area, so I read the descriptions of the ones a bit farther out. None of them sound like the one your son found, based on what they say the final cache container is, or based on the fact that they've been found recently (no one saying they're missing). It could be the final stage to a long-distance multi or puzzle, but that's probably less likely.

I'm guessing it's a cache that's been archived... in which case it would be nice to either figure out who owned it so they can get their ammo can back, or give the can back to your son son it's not geo-trash. :D Maybe some long-standing cachers in the area found it when it was active and could provide some insight? Hard to know though.
