Geocaching Names?

Hello LJMoore98.

This is a bit tricky because you haven't given us any information. I see you already have one cache out there. I'm assuming that the cache in question is one which you have in the pipeline? To be honest though, naming a Geocache is a very personal thing and can be dependent on many factors.

Can you name it after the place where it is hidden?

Can you think of something cryptic about where/how it is hidden?

It is a brand new year, perhaps something about New Year Resolutions or the fact that the world didn't end on 21st December  ?

I wouldn't get too strung out about it though. If you have hidden a decent cache, folks wont really be bothered too much about what it is called :) .

Good luck.

The cache will be placed in the woods near a tree

The cache is a small container

The cache is a new one

Do these woods hold any special significance for you? Is it somewhere you like to walk yourself or go with your dog? If so, how about something alliterative like Woodland Walkies, or Woodland Wander.

If you want to start being a bit clever, something like "You Can't See The Wood For The Trees" which implies searching for something well-camouflaged (what your finders will be doing) in a wooded area.

Quite often people like to refer to a book or film that the location reminds you of. Is it a bit like Narnia or a Grimms Fairy Tale location that someone like Little Red Riding Hood would have visited? Does the shape of the tree remind you of anything like a number or letter or hands or fingers which you can use to help you think of a name?

Is it a big Oak tree ("Ye Olde Oak Tree Cache" wouldn't look out of place), or it there lots of holly and ivy about like the song "The Holly and The Ivy"? Are the woods quite spooky as it gets dark so you could call it Spooky Woods Cache.

Tell us a bit more about why you chose to place it there and I'm sure I can come up with more.

You could simply name it after the wood, with no further adornment.

For example, if your cache was in the woodland that the A1082 runs through (just south of Sheringham) then you might call it

  • Sheringwood

(as listed on the OS 50K map) ...

... or one of

  • Broadwood's Dale
  • Eastwood
  • Maddis's Dale
  • Old Wood
  • Pretty Corner
  • Sheringham Wood
  • The Plains

(for the relevant patch of land as described on higher-resolution maps).

If you want to see a map of the location there is a very useful link to Streetmap which shows you Ordnance Survey 1:50K scale maps (the Landranger series). You'll find the link on the UK Geocaching wiki - it's the one at the bottom of the map list, "Ordnance Survey Maps". Just enter the coordinates of where you plan to put the cache (in any format).

OK, the MAGIC maps version:

http://magic.defra.gov.uk/website/magic/viewer.htm?startTopic=magicall&chosenLayers=bapbbogIndex&xygridref=615489,341453&startScale=5000

It takes a bit of getting used to. Good luck.

The link (MagicMapIt!) in the UK Geocaching Wiki to the main MAGIC map is much easier to use. All you have to do is enter coordinates. Automatically shows the correct layers.

What do you think of "Water Woodland Walkies" or "Wonderful Woodland Walkies"????
Which of th above do you like???

The names are fine. Reminds me of one I adopted, "Birdlip Walk", whose name I've never seen the need to change. I honestly don't think it makes much difference to finders provided the name isn't deliberately misleading or offensive.

All depends on what you're hiding, where you're hiding it, and what type of cache it is. Using something around your hiding area is always good. I found a cache the other day where the hider named it "Keep Off" because it was near a cell phone tower that had a sign on it that says "Keep Off", and of course the cache was right underneath the sign in a safe place.

If it's a puzzle, I like to name my puzzles after something I reference in the puzzle itself.

It's not about the name though, it's about the hide.
