RedShoesGirl Posted January 4, 2013 Share Posted January 4, 2013 I should be hitting Route 66 on January 20th (give or take a day) and plan on doing most the route the first day... at least you don't have to worry about rattlesnakes. be aware, cell phones don't work on all parts of the mother road. and it's cold out here! temps drop quite a bit after the sun goes down. That's good to hear, I was kinda concerned about rattlers and I do have my trial of onstar if I get in trouble. I did plan on caching after dark and we will bring warm clothes but if it does get too cold it may stop us. yes it is too cold for snakes and torties to be out and about. and hopefully the wind won't come up. we get some warm spells here and there so maybe your visit will coincide with some relatively warm weather. but have fun no matter how many caches you actually find! this is a railfan's idea of paradise too. vagabond Posted January 4, 2013 Share Posted January 4, 2013 We did it backwards staring at Morgan springs and National trails and going to Kelbaker road, coming back a month later and finishing our best day was 479, we started a little before daylight but some were not the 66 series also we took our time. If your going to be in the area for a few days why not try the planes trains and cars it's in-between the 15 the 395 and the 58, all dirt road but doable in a car just watch where you stop. We hit the trail hard at 6:00 am, just as the sun was starting to light up the sky, found the first 10 or so with headlamps. With my daughter driving and my son and I finding the caches, him opening them and me signing them we got on quite a roll untill 11:00 am when we stopped at Amboy crater for lunch. My daughter decidedshe wanted to catch a lizard and after cashingthe third one it perched on a rock and she managed to pick up the rock with the lizard. It then started climbing on her and even when she put it down so we could leave it would run back onto her. Anyways, after we left it started gettin hot and we all started getting grumpy and things started to slow down till we packed it in at 1:40 pm and drove to Needles. I did pop into Arizona and picked up a virtual and traditional to log a new state. Total find count for today: 506 caches. There was a tie for closest guess but Mastifflover is the winner for staying under. bamboozle 512 Mastifflover 500 Membership will be upgraded next weekend when I return to Vancouver, congrats.
