Geocaching Haiti

I am heading to Haiti in about a month for a trip with my church. I searched for available caches in Haiti and there are only 7 "active" caches in the whole country. One of the active caches is on the private cruise beach that I will not have access to and the others that I looked at had no more than 1 or 2 logs and the containers were replaced each time. None of these locations are anywhere near Corail where we will be working.

 

I guess what my questions are... Is there a way to still approve a virtual cache on a case by case basis? I have made 2 separate trips to Haiti in the past and wondered about caching there. In Haiti, if I set a traditional cache it will be picked up within 20 minutes of me leaving it there. That's just the way it is. Would it be better to try to setup an earth cache?

 

Also, if I place the cache in Haiti is it considered bad form to go ahead and log it as a find? I know that it is generally considered bad form to log a cache that you set in the states. But in an entire country with less than 10 caches with the chances of them actually being there slim and none... Can a person catch a break here?

If you have an interest in and knowledge of some aspect of the local geology, sure. Just as a cache to be a cache, not so much. This is an opinion, not a guideline issue. I'm sure an Earthcache could be created for the area, and it would, obviously, survive more than 20 minutes and give geocachers something to find while in Haiti.

Considered bad form by whom? you? you'd be the cache owner, you can absolutely give yourself permission to log a find on your own cache.

 

I wonder about your proposed maintenance plan for this. You're not able to replace it more often than perhaps once a year? and you know it will disappear "within about 20 minutes" ;-) If there's a routinely used spot by your church or affiliation of churches, perhaps church members can be recruited to keep an eye on it.

I have had similar problems visiting countries that have no or very few caches. This summer for instance I was in Paraguay, which has few caches, and none where I was.

When I spoke with a local geocacher about this and that I missed to get a found cache for this country I got the info that there is a way to get the country loged all the same.

 

Simply create an event in the place that you are visiting.

If there are no local or tourist geocachers visiting the event there is of course a problem, as there has to be at least two geocachers to log as atendees to get the event approved, I think.

The best thing is to set up the event as soon as possible so the word has time to spread around and hope for the best.
