Grey icons

While I don't like the new icons much either but did Coca-Cola engage it's "community" before changing the recipe? Or Microsoft before changing Windows XP -> Vista -> Windows 7 -> Windows 8? or any number of other companies making changes to their products? Sometimes it seems we expect more from GS than we expect from other companies.

As a matter of fact those companies did and do. Coca-Cola used a flawed survey method, testing only the first sip, in order to come to their conclusion about New Coke and in the end reversed their decision. Microsoft has a well established testing process leading up to beta releases of their products. In today's age of crowd sourcing, collaboration and social media it is possible for companies to try and receive consumer feedback at a cost that makes economic sense.

I don't think the icons are all the bad. I just happen to like thebruce0's logic and approach. I think it provides better feedback for _my_ needs, other's needs may be different.

Let's call it a bug report after all, Moun10Bike. It appears we are not receiving the icons for the Found and DNF, Disable Listing, or any of the others now. It is therefore all coming out as text instead. Check the logs on any cache page. I've done the CTRL-F5 to force a cache refresh, and these icons are not appearing.

Are you using Greasemonkey skripts? I've same problem and after I had disabled Greasemonkey, icons worked perfectly... My problem is with "GC little helper"...

Indeed. Would be nice if some day, gc.com would quit putzing with things that are strictly cosmetic, but wind up breaking decent scripts.

I've read all of the posts on this subject. I've seen a few people mention the red star / blue star issue for the D/T ratings but I didn't see an answer as to what that is all about. Do the different colors mean something different? Or are they all transitioning to blue but some red ones are still showing up?

That Blackface icon is racist
Really? Are the yellow face icons racist too? How about the red face icon? And are the green face icons somehow offensive to anyone? :yikes: And isn't the violin associated with the music of the Imperialist West? :signalviolin:

Sorry that you have never studied history and culture. Try it sometime. Maybe they'll put up a swastika icon next?

Good grief.

I'm the biggest bleeding heart liberal for like 60 miles and I think you're taking this too far.

I would also like to point out that using red and green is a horrible idea. Lots of people can't tell the difference because they are color blind.

In all fairness... there are the hover-over "tool tips" if somebody can't tell the difference.

If you want to see what it would look like with various types of color blindnesses, try this page:

Sorry, Harry. I've gotta agree with Mr. Mischief on this one. You're being a little silly here.

Wow that slipped in fast, I had almost thought that Godwin's Law was untrue, but it was only a matter of time.

Yes that was a step overboard and it is time to calm down. There have been a bunch of attacks on Groundspeak. Some people complain that a site never changes, then they try and improve the look and others hate it. The discussion on weather you like it or not is fine, but some of the attacks, analogies tossed out, and the direction this is going is not. Reign it in please so no time outs will be given to you or your friends.

Thanks for stepping in with some cool-headed moderation!

I will say, though, that I don't hear many people complaining that the site never changes. I do, however, hear a lot of complaints that suggestions don't get given adequate review and too much energy is spent on things that were never asked for.

That's the Bookmark List icon. The only way I knew that was to open it and see the filename. Would anybody on this planet ever guess that was what that shape meant? Apologies to the icon designer... I'm sure you're not feeling very good about this thread right now, but really... how does that shape represent a bookmark list?

Oh c'mon man!

If you get close enough to the screen, squint your eyes, and hold your tongue just right you can tell that is clearly a book with bookmark sticking out of it.

I think.

To bad, don't like the new icons.. i miss the color :(

When did grey stop being a color?

I think the icons now look a little flat, regardless of what color they are. Adding a little color gradient, fade effect and/or boarders to the icons would to help make them look a little less flat.

Gray has never been a color. Gray is a shade.

Thanks for that, but I've pretty much given up on Greasemonkey fixes to the website. They need to be updated almost every time Groundspeak changes something, and sooner or later they are useless. I used to love it, and still thank all the Greasemonkeys that spent their time trying to improve things for us, but I've resigned myself to accepting whatever Groundspeak decides we need, as much as that sometimes stinks. They should wise up, but history has proven time and again that they won't.

But thanks for the grease!

??? Fifty Shades ???

Yes, thanks for this, but I still can't deal with the grey. I'll play with this and see what I can figure out.

If they simply took the grey ones and used a darker color for contrast instead of a lighter color, all would be right in my world. Eventually, I'll learn the new images, but that will be impossible for the ones that I can't see.

I've read all of the posts on this subject. I've seen a few people mention the red star / blue star issue for the D/T ratings but I didn't see an answer as to what that is all about. Do the different colors mean something different? Or are they all transitioning to blue but some red ones are still showing up?

They should all be blue. If you are seeing the old color, it's because your browser is not recognizing that the image has changed and it using the one from it's cache. Hold shift and refresh the page and you should see the blue stars.

I've had to do it a number of times as each star group is a different image.

It is a long standing convention within the Graphical User Interface that disabled or inactive features be 'greyed out' and whilst I really don't care what colour the DNF icon is, having a multitude of grey icons (log visit, watch listing, bookmark listing, personal cache note, write note and not blue smiley DNF) old and new users will assume that these functions are disabled. Please have a chat with your web team and get them to read up on web site useability and user experience.

Also in the UK we have a number of laws that govern how accessible a website must be for people with differing abilities. Use of similar shades of the same colour (grey on grey for example) is particularly difficult for people with visual impairment. If you feel the need to have a set of unified icons, then I would suggest using a colour with a better contrast to the background colour.

FWIW, I really like thebruce0's proposed set of icons, and he has demonstrated what I was talking about in some of my earlier posts. Within less than a day, a user has already produced a much better solution. If Groundspeak had asked for improvements/suggestions relating to a new set of icons before making the change, they could have had a much better end-result without all the headache.

I've not much to add to that statement. I'm not sure if asking the community would really lead to a stringent redesign but I hope GS considers now suggestions from this thread and improves their first design.

Even if they had asked us to take a look at the new icons before they where implemented and they didn't undergo a significant redesign I think a lot of us would have felt better about it just because they asked.

I've never seen such a bunch of whiny babies in my life (and I used to teach kindergarten).

Change is good. Embrace it and quite complaining. Geesh.

Change is good, but should we all read Fifty Shades of Grey to understand this change?

That would be a really good idea! If everyone is reading that book they certainly won't be in here complaining!! <_<

But will reading the book help us understand why people "complain"?

How would life be if indifference takes over? Would it make this forum, this website and even this game more enjoyable?

So, how will the new schemes fit there? Especially the PQ page?

What a tough crowd.

Perhaps Groundspeak should run their future releases through Usability Analysis and Focus Groups.

It is a tough, but above-average crowd. Thus, they don't need to QA anything they do. If there are gaps in the feature set, someone in the community will fill them.

Think GSAK, Greasemonkey, Stylish and other community-supplied solutions.

Agreed. Since there was no advance notice of the changes made to the icons or colors, the first day I logged in and saw the new grey icons I thought it meant that these features were now disabled.

When I first saw these grey icons I thought something was wrong with my computer or site.

As it is I have to switch from progressive glasses to computer glasses in order to see anything. The color change just makes it very hard. I also found it hard to see when I am outside in bad lighting, using my iPhone.

Personally I was ok with the old way, with a few exceptions. I often got my d/t mixed up when scanning caches.

I also would love my dnf to be (blue) on my cache search map so I can know I had been to that cache before. (that was a request long ago).

No matter.

I appreciate groundspeaks many efforts to constantly improve and make changes. In this case I think we just got too much, too fast, too drastic without warning. I rely on color with my not so great eyes. The tiny greyish icons all look too much alike. simple designs were good.

The TB icons are especially hard to see and are confusing enough with the many options. I would love to see colors like green grabbed and or retrieved, red dropped, yellow discovered, ...sorry about those who are color blind. Maybe the up down arrow can still be used.

Thanks for that, but I've pretty much given up on Greasemonkey fixes to the website.

That's why I maintain all the greasemonkey scripts I use regardless if I wrote them or not. They break too often and that's because they rely on specific layouts, IDs and classes in the HTML.

This stylish "script" (it's really just a CSS style) is as generic as possible. They only way it will break is if they move/rename the icons and it's very trivial for anyone to fix that themselves.

I just tested my Stylish style on Chrome. Just remove the two top lines starting with an @ and the last curly brace. Then use the Stylish plugin to write a new style and paste in the modified text. Finally add a "Applies to" of "URLs on the domain" on "www.geocaching.com" and save.

First off, GREAT that we have a way to update the updated icons with the ones that seem pleasing to the majority here (and I would guess out there, if Groundspeak would use them...).

Second, I have no idea what you mean above about how to enter this stuff in Chrome, or even Firefox for that matter...

Third, while it is great to use monkeys to suppress what the hamsters are doing, it doesn't send the right message to Groundspeak. What they need to hear is that we like the bruce-O icons better. If we just use monkeys, they won't hear from us, or understand that what we want is different from what they have launched without warning.

The cache pages have been steadily becoming more visually difficult for folks like me who are in their 50s. Even with the page increased in size I find it visually difficult to read it. I think this site needs to consider the fact that there is a wide range of ages who geocache and read the pages. Give us older folks a break please and make the pages visually friendly to us again. We need contrast and color. Not shades of grey and similar shades of bland colors that blend in together.
