+Tharandter
Am I wrong or is there really no category for canyons and gorges? We have already a category for "Sinkholes" but not for gorges and canyons. What do you mean, is there a potential for a new Waymarking category? Quote Link to comment
+BruceS
I think the problem with canyons and gorges is their size. Where do you waymark on something that runs for several miles. Most sink holes are fairly small relatively (I know there are exceptions). Even relatively small canyons and gorges can be miles long. Quote Link to comment

But we also have numerous categories like 'Glaciers' and 'Natural lakes', which can be miles long, too! I think that's not the problem because you can add a variable like 'Coordinates location' where you have to locate the spot of the header coords. Something like 'Look Out Plattform', 'Entrance of a Gorge' and so on. Edited November 7, 2012 by Tharandter Quote Link to comment
+BruceS
I agree there are other categories that suffer from the same problem that does not mean it is a good idea to repeat the same mistakes. It was my main problem when the lakes category came up and remains my concern with that category. Quote Link to comment

Why a waymark must have a maximum size? If I want to visit the Grand Canyon, It would be nice if there was the possibility to log my visit in the category 'Canyons'. GT.US
I can think of some really spectacular named canyons and gorges. Agawa Canyon : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agawa_Canyon Columbia River Gorge: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbia_River_Gorge Maybe if there weren't a category for Canyons and Gorges, Places of Geologic Significance would work? +silverquill
I agree that creating waymarks for large geographic features is pretty meaningless. I was not in favor of the Natural Lakes category for that very reason. When I wanted to created a category for rivers, the same problem existed. So I limited it to three possible locations on the river - its origin, destination, or its confluence with another river. I suspect that most canyons and gorges could be waymarked in other categories. Scenic lookouts, several park categories, geologic formations, hikes and trails, etc. I'm sure there would be something. +Tharandter
I don't understand why such things like 'Gorges' can't get a own category and should covered in a general category like 'Places of Geologic Significance'?! Those places are a unique entity! If I use this principle, then 'Places of Geologic Significance' include lakes, glaciers, Arks and so on! There are hundreds of categories which fit into another or should be. The best example is the actual Peer review for 'Soroptimist International Markers'. Instead of a category 'International Charity Markers' there are categories for each of them (Kiwanis, Lions Club, ...). Those things annoying me anytime and are not rational! +lumbricus
Feel free to write a good category and convince us, why not? I like gorges, too. Some examples: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 -lumbricus Quote Link to comment
