vdirects
Hi, I am brand new to Geocaching. The site makes it look easy. Just choose a cache and get started. But I cannot find the coordinates. When I click on the geocache that I want, where do I find the coordinates to manually put into my GPS device? All I see are the written clues by the hiders. Also is there a guide/document that outlines how to do this? I'm so confused. Quote Link to comment
+Gitchee-Gummee
Yes, the site does make it look easy. But, playing a piano is easy after some practice. Here is the best way to find caches near where you live. With your GPSr, obtain the coordinates of your home. You'll need to enter those into your Profile. At the opening page of geocaching.com, find the YOUR PROFILE drop-down menu > Select ACCOUNT DETAILS > On the right side of the page, locate a box that says: Your Location. Click the change link > Enter those coordinates into the search box and press [sEARCH] -- the map should show a pointer at those coordinates > If you agree with what it shows, go to the bottom of the page and select [save Changes] (it only needs to be close, anyway). If you do not agree with what it shows, you can click and drag that pointer to where you want it, then [save Changes]. --------------------- Sign out of geocaching.com and then sign in again. Those coordinates should now be in the search box on that opening page. Click the search icon. It will bring up a list of local caches for you -- closest descending to furthest. You can access that map from near the top of the cache list page. That should get you going. Good Luck, and have fun! The coordinates are in the blue colored information box, near the left side. Coordinates in bold print. Edited September 19, 2012 by Gitchee-Gummee Quote Link to comment

It's a good thing to learn how to input coordinates manually. Once you start searching out multicaches, you're going to need to be able to do that. Here's how I input coordinates into our gps as a Basic Member using loc files: 1.) I first create a folder on my computer called "Geocaches loc files". 2.) I go to the cache page I want, and click on "LOC waypoint file", and save it to the gpx folder on the computer. 3.) To get the caches into my gps, I use GPSBabel: http://www.gpsbabel.org/ 4.) Hook the gps up to the computer and download the caches with GPSBabel. is there a guide/document that outlines how to do this? I'm so confused. There's various sections/articles that are geared to the new cacher. First, when you go to http://www.geocaching.com/seek/ there are a series of tabs: "Learn", "Your Profile", "Play", etc just under the banner. There's a drop-down menu of items under each one. Under "Learn" is the link to "Geocaching 101": http://www.geocaching.com/guide/ The Help Center is a valuable resource, with tons of information: http://support.Groundspeak.com/index.php The Guidelines can also be helpful to the new cacher: http://www.gpsbabel.org/ B. vdirects
Thanks, everyone Especially, MsRubble and Chief301...Turns out I thought I was logged in when I was not. I didn't see the coordinates because I wasn't logged in (D'oh!) Quote Link to comment
