Observation Decks

Recommended Posts

So I've had the idea for a new category in the back of my mind for a little bit and I figured I'd toss it out here. I haven't put a lot of thought into it yet though, so I'm not officially going to propose anything in the near future. Just wanted to see what others though.

My new category proposal would be "Observation Decks" (I think)

What I'm talking about are all those special places tourists(mostly) go to get a great view of their surroundings. Specifically it would be some sort of structure with a viewing platform for the public.

Some more unique ones which made me think of the possible category are:

Penobscot Bridge and Observatory http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penobscot_Narrows_Bridge_and_Observatory

Thomas Hill Standpipe http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Hill_Standpipe

The Grand Canyon Skywalk http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Canyon_Skywalk

Some other would be:

Skyscraper observation decks, i.e. the 86th and 102nd floors of the Empire State Building

Decks located on towers like the three levels of the Eiffel Tower, the Space Needle, The CN Tower

Things like the Statue of Liberty, Washington Monument

and a bunch of others http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Observation_deck

There may be some redundancy for the category "scenic overlooks", but those are mostly just any particular place with a good view and mostly trailside. I'm thinking of a specific structure that has part of it designated for observing. Also, it could possibly be redundant with "Look-out Towers" but that seems kinda limiting.

Also, many of these would fit into other categories, but that isn't really isn't an issue.

I've been getting interested in Waymarking more lately and this is just something that came to mind.

The Grand Canyon Skywalk would be an awesome waymark, except for the fact that cameras are not allowed! (Unless I'm mistaken!). Your idea of a category for Observation Decks is worth proposing in the forums. Thank you for bringing the idea here so you can get feedback from other waymarkers.

Your right, they don't allow you to bring cameras on the deck. I think they charge a ridiculous fee if you want a picture of yourself using their own mounted camera. The skywalk is already marked under the Wikipedia category right now.

I just found another neat deck here: http://www.Waymarking.com/gallery/image.aspx?f=1&guid=48e24746-3c57-404d-a583-279a75fd1412

I like the idea for stand-alone objects, but not the ones mounted at other structures as skyscrapers or towers. The latter can be considered as a structural element of a look-out tower, even of every look-out tower. Stand-alone is something entirely different, sort of a horizontal look-out tower. I would really like to see that as a category.
