You will find the answers for this type of question if you read through the Guidelines:

http://support.Groundspeak.com/index.php?pg=kb.book&id=11'>http://support.Groundspeak.com/index.php?pg=kb.book&id=11

You really should read the Guidelines a few times before considering hiding caches.

Lots more information can be found in the Help Center:

Secondly, when hiding a cache how devious and cunning should you be?

As much as you want to be. If you want people to actually find your caches, you might want to think about just how "devious" it should be. Or you will run the risk of getting a lot of DNF's, which will require you to run out and make sure the cache is still there.

Personally, I don't waste a lot of time on "devious" hides. I'll look around for a while, read the hint, and if I still can't find it, I'll move on. I really can't be bothered spending more than 20 minutes on one cache. If it's a micro, then my patience is even more limited. But that's just me. Other people like these types of hides.

Thanks for the advice and the link.I've no real intention of hiding any caches yet,i'm just airing some thoughts for future reference.

Cheers.

#1....I would suggest, as everyone else has, that you please first read the guidelines for hiding a cache. Then read them again. They should answer any question you may have and prevent you running into any problems.

I would also suggest strongly that you go out and find a bunch more caches before you think about hiding one. You have been signed up for 3 days and have found 4 caches. You still have much to learn, Grasshopper. Play the game awhile and make sure you're going to stick with it before taking on the responsibility of owning and maintaining a cache.

The answer to your question, however, is .10 mile or 528 feet.

#2...Again, since you are brand new at this, what you think is "devious" might be pretty easy for an experienced cacher. Veteran Geocachers have seen every tricky hide in the book and might spot your hide before they even get out of the car.

The first person who thought about hiding one under a lamp post skirt was probably considered devious at the time...

Devious now might be getting you to that lamp post, where the obvious location is under the skirt, and hiding the cache 10 feet up.

I gave a Favorite point to an LPC that had 4 or 5 "decoys" before you finally found the actual cache. Not terribly devious but very clever and funny.
