Recently Viewed Caches list

So now that the 'Recently Viewed Caches' feature has been around for a few months, what do people think? Useful? Meh?

I generally like it but I wish that I could move it below the recently logged caches lists, and for both lists I wish I could control how many caches appear on each list.

Posted

I do find it very useful. I go there a lot more subconsciously than I would think. I think it was a god idea. Saves a lot of clicking in some situations which abound from time to time.

Posted

I use it all the time. I'm fairly new to this and haven't found a good way to organize what I've found, still want to find, etc. I find myself looking at several caches to try and decide which one(s) to go after and this tool has helped to find ones that I've searched for using different criteria.

Posted

I've used it on a couple of rare occasions but the times that could use it the most it doesn't go back far enough. I also don't like that it is such a prominent spot.

Posted

I blocked it off the Quick View page almost immediately after it was added. I have never gone to the actual page. There are times when it may have been helpful but I forgot that it was there until I saw this topic. I just looked at it and see that it can be useful. In fact, I should make more use of it.

I turned it off as soon this has been possible and never used it.

I turned it off as soon as that was available, I haven't missed it.

I didn't know it was possible to turn it off. That's good to know, will have to do that.

Never use it, and find it just a pest.

It's my understanding that this list was used to help locate a missing Geocacher. Unfortunately, the outcome was not good :(

I just went in to check, and cannot see how to turn it off. Help anyone?

Go to your account details

and scroll to the bottom section titled Your Preferences

click change and change the setting of the last item ( in section display preferences).

I've disabled the display on my profile page. When I've wanted to return to a recently viewed cache listing, I've used the "Recently Viewed" link at the top of the profile page. It has actually been useful occasionally (e.g., for looking up a puzzle cache that I saw earlier and now want to work on), but I don't want the list at the top of my profile page.

At first, I considered it annoying and "hid" it.

But, later, when I was trying to put together a list of caches to search for on a 3-day trip, the feature became invaluable. It was so helpful, that I've left it "unhidden" ever since.

Just goes to show ya...old dogs can learn to appreciate new-fangled things. :D

You should look into making some bookmark lists. Combined with the "recently viewed" feature, planning becomes much easier.

You can create up to 40 Bookmark Lists and share them with your friends. Each list can contain 1000 items.

When I look at my 5 recently viewed caches I have:

  1. A cache I found 3 days ago
  2. A cache I found last month
  3. A recently published cache that I haven't found yet
  4. A cache that I posted a NM on and checked it to see how it was doing
  5. One of my own caches

I look at a lot of caches willy-nilly so haven't really found a good use for the 5-recent-viewed. I'm more of a PQ user for planning cache outtings. But I can sort of see how it could be a useful tool for non-premium members.

Thanks for the info on turning off the feature Cezanne. I had no idea. Nice of GC to offer the option. But before I turn it off I'll see if someone's come up with a use for it that I haven't considered and might be useful for me.

When I'm planning a cache outing, I read the cache description on every potential cache that I may be seeking. The short list at the top of default profile is really not useful after I have reviewed 20-30 caches. Also, I am using a 17" monitor. If I set the resolution too high, things get to small for my old eyes. Having useless information at the top is really not helpful as it pushes useful info out of view. I AdBlocked it when it first came out and then disabled it when we were given the option.

I use it and kinda like it. I'm likely to look at planned caches before I go out, so when I get back to log, they are right there on top.

Sometimes I look at random things too, but they go away soon enough.

Once in a while I go to the full list, but usually the 5 are good enough for me.

Wouldn't a private bookmark list have been more helpful? I'd think the recently viewed caches list would very quickly become filled with caches that I found that I wasn't interested in, once I viewed the cache page.

At first I wasn't sure what it was good for and thought it was just in the way, but now I can't remember how I lived without it. I even find the mix about right, with just a handful listed before the recent logs: 9 times out of 10, the cache I'm looking for is one of those 5, and when it isn't, it's easy to go to the longer list.

We find it very useful but wish it showed the most recent 20 caches we have viewed. Great for road trips with limited phone internet which cost a fortune if we travel from Kanada to the US. See it, get the info needed and Bobs your uncle....(he is my uncle) onward to that dnf. :o

I found it to be completely useless for me. And incredibly annoying/in your face, like the FaceBook log in. How do I turn that off?

+1

This about covers it for me too.

Except that I find the 'Do you want to share this log on FaceBook?' equally annoying/irritating.

I've found it to be interesting. I haven't spent time yet to figure out the highest and best use but I have found that I use the links fairly often. I doesn't interfere with my use of the page.

Meh. It's nice, but Firefox has a feature that goes so far beyond it.

I just type a few letters of the cache title that I remember (in the address bar), and Firefox pops down a whole list of recent pages with those letters in the title. If I want to re-visit, for example, "A River Runs Through It", I just type "riv" and that's usually enough. If I go back to that cache a lot, "r" should be all it takes.

It even remembers pages I visited months ago, so I hardly need bookmarks anymore.

I don't use it because I use GSAK. If I like a cache I download the GPX file and add it to the database I'm using. I"m planning a two week trip across six states and I have 320+ caches in that DB (I don't know how many I've rejected, I save fewer than I save). I've also planned day trips within my 'local area' and other short trips nearby (with any where from 4-6 caches to over twenty) - how is that short list going to help me keep all these different sets of caches organized?

I use it a lot. Especially if the cache page closeds by accident and you can't remember the GC# of what you were viewing.

Is it too much for you just to click on Recently viewed? This will lead you to

http://www.geocaching.com/my/recentlyviewedcaches.aspx

and this lists even more than 20 caches.

The list of five is just displayed by default on top of all finds (if not switched off). The longer list can be viewed even if someone decided to switch off the display of the short list on top of the finds.

I didn't know you could turn it off!

Thanks

Now, I'd really like to get rid of all the facebook clutter!

Too bad there wasn't a greasemonkey script, or something, for that
