What's up with live.geocaching.com?

Recommended Posts

Hello gc.com team,

i've been on a cache tour yesterday. As every time after that I tried to upload my field notes with the good old java app "Geocaching live - powered by trackonfly" to the site live.geocaching.com from where I am sending them to http://www.geocaching.com/my/fieldnotes.aspx. That worked perfectly for many years and is a good solution since live logs from in field often sounds like "TFTC - fast found"

In past, the site was not working some days for some minutes. But since yesterday there is no more page loading. What has happened?!

The offline map creator for the program is not working too, and ends with the words: " failed due to connection timeout". In GC Live, the possibility to use online maps like openstreetmap is not working, too

I hope that it's just an temporaly problem?! Here are many people using this variant! Maybe the server is just offline due to any reason?

Thanks for reading and hoping with soon answer, when I can expect to use the program as before

Not working here either. It's been very unreliable loading cache details for some time, but it's downloading nothing now.

Hope this is fixed soon, otherwise it's a new phone for me.

Same problem, server not responding.

I hope that this interruption will be fixed as soon as possible.

Mmm, what about osm map? Follow the URL tinyurl.com/osmtile1 I tryed new Map server http://tile.openstreetmap.org/{z}/{x}/{y}.png,'>http://tile.openstreetmap.org/{z}/{x}/{y}.png, http://tile.openstreetmap.org/[z]/[x]/[y].png and http://tile.openstreetmap.org/[Z]/[X]/[Y].png but not get map. All with WGS84/Spherical. What is wrong?

For google maps I do not have problem http://mt1.google.com/vt/lyrs=m&x=[X]&y=[Y]&z=[iNVZ]

All with WGS84/Spherical. What is wrong?

After doing "jar xvf GeocachingLive.jar" and looking at "ay.class" with a binary viewer, the correct new URL for OpenStreetMap is:

http://tile.openstreetmap.org/[iNVZ]/[X]/[Y].png

(notice the INVZ instead of Z, and as always non-default "WGS84/Spherical")

Works great on my Nokia E71 (still love it for its excellent GPS receiver).

Is the source code of the GeocachingLive software available? There's a couple of minor bugs I'd really like to see being fixed. It's such a great application and works on so many phones.

Wow, cool, I didn't know that. Was always wishing for a satellite view to better locate caches. With "lyrs=y" it does what I want. Thank you so much for posting this URL.

In geocaching live on your cell phone

about Menu - Tools - Settings you can "Add mapserver":

Name: OSM

URL: http://tile.openstreetmap.org/[iNVZ]/[X]/[Y].png

Projection: WGS84 or WGS84/Spherical

Than select the new mapserver in the pick list "Map server" and save it.

Fine, thanks

I was already desperate about the "tinyurl.com/osmtile1-pattern".

Now GCL works well again, thank you very much !!! :)

It seems like it is! http://live.geocaching.com/livebetaretirement.html!

Have you contacted Groundspeak already?

I am a Nokia E72 user and sympathize with you strongly!

I'm also having an E72, and would hate to see the current app disappear.

While there are two applications listed in the "API Partner Applications" for Symbian, neither one works with E72, but appear to require touchscreen mobiles.

There just is no alternative.

Just read it today, and that's very bad news. I like my Nokia E71, and there's no real need to buy a new mobile phone (it just does what I want). I'm sure there are still a lot Symbian S60 phones in use world-wide.

I've written a mail to the address supplied in the text. Maybe it's not too difficult to adapt the software to the new API (like it was very easy to configure a new mapserver some weeks ago). However, my programming skills are primarily C for Unix, but I have no experience with Java on mobile devices yet.

I'm not sure if I want to buy a new phone just for Geocaching. What's coming next? No more support for Android 2.3, Windows 7 and iPhone 4? I'm paying premium member, and of course I don't expect Geocaching.com people to put a lot of work in development of old Symbian S60 applications or the old API (it hasn't changed for 1-2 years anyway), but I would have preferred a better planned ramp-down with a much longer time for users to find a new device which fits there needs. (Hey, it's not even Christmas where a lot of people get new phones. :-) A warning only a few weeks in advance is not right.

Maybe this is a sign to have a time-out from Geocaching in general. For me, it's a hobby and it should be fun. But this is no fun now.

This brings now a question:

where to find a replacement app (and which one) for Symbian-based non-touchscreen mobiles?

The only one i Know is the Geocache Navigator. But I don't know if it'S still available.

But for me GC Live is working half. I'm using it only with PQs - works

Offline Maps: work (although I can't create new ones because the map creator is no more working) - but Mobile Atlas creator works fine

Online maps - still working

not working is: Downloading Caches (I am not missing that cause of PQ)

AND Field notes - that'S very bad for me. Now i just can mark Caches but no more upload them as field notes

I tried today the Trimble Geocache Navigator. Not available :(

For me, the Field Notes were a major reason for using the Live Beta. If it would even be possible to download them from the mobile and send in manually..

So has anyone found a working alternative for non-touchscreen Symbian phones? I'm not going to buy a new phone when the one I have works just fine

There is nothing good available for non touch. You can try AFtrack and smartGPX

But none of them is supporting field notes. So they are lesse worthful than the "rest" of GCLive

Actually, SmartGPX supports Field Notes, although it is a bit more tricky to get them to the geocaching.com site.

I've used it for logging while travelling. The trick is to write the logs with SmartGPX, so afterwards you can then export the logs to a Field Note file (in the mobile). That file needs then be sent to the website.

Hi,

the server at live.geocaching.com has been ramped down on Sept 15, and this is why the Geocaching Live Beta application no longer has access to database.

One suggestion was AFtrack. I've used that a lot for other purposes (tracking and lightweight navigation), and also tested it a bit for geocaching. It does work, in the sense that you can have geocaches displayed as POIs, but it's not as easy and streamlined as GC Live was. And as far as I can tell, there's no way to get the cache descriptions and such. Some have mentioned SmartGPX. This does look pretty neat, though I haven't tested it extensively yet. SmartGPX does not seem to provide any map display, but supposedly can integrate with AFTrack by using an addon. If so, using AFTrack and SmartGPX together might be a pretty complete solution.

The main advantage (feature) of the Geocaching Live application was that you could be anywhere on the world and get a current map with caches and basic information. No need to prepare anything offline and transfer it to the phone. Just have fun with geocaching - whereever you are.

This has gone now.

SmartGPX is cool if you know in advance where you're going. Good tool to organize a large amount of GPX data (but you need to get those files on your mobile device first). SmartGPX is also able to view caches in Nokia Maps. Although the offline feature of Nokia Maps is very nice, it has two big disadvantages: (1) no satellite view, (2) always tries to put you on streets and not where you really are. As far as I know, SmartGPX cannot view caches on Google Maps instead of Nokia Maps.

If you know where you're going and you have an online connection, it's also possible to import GPX data into a personal layer for Google Maps. However, there's still the problem that you have to prepare things in advance.

I also offered help to Geocaching.com to try to convert the GC Live S60 app from old to new API, but nobody answered my mail. They shouldn't have asked for help if they didn't want it anyway. Or does anybody know where the source code of the GC Live S60 app is available from? (What's the benefit of keeping it secret?)

Yes, it seems geocachers are fantastic at making something as simple as lat/lon very VERY complex and limiting for the end user.
