I am used to keeping my eyes out for ticks and poison ivy. So I was wondering what sort of precautions I should take when in your part of the world. Also, what are the caches I should look at to get. Look for a Bookmark Link on each page and do expect ticks and Poison Ivy. Mission Trails Regional Park not far from downtown San Diego. Iron Mountain Trails twenty miles from downtown San Diego. Cuyamaca Rancho State Park about forty miles east of downtown San Diego. Good chance you will encounter rattlesnakes. Just watch where you put your feet and your hands. Risk goes up when you hurry or run along the trails. Poke a stick or your hiking pole into the nooks and crannies before reaching in to grab a container. There's been just one reported instance of a Geocacher that was snake-bitten in San Diego County. He was running when bitten and so the snake had no time to sound a warning. Best precaution for avoiding ticks and snakes is to hike with a tick-magnet (female) companion and make sure to keep her ahead of you on the trail. Always encourage her to be the one to reach for and grab the Geocache containers. See what I'm sayin'? July brings high temperatures to San Diego back country. Water, hat, sunscreen ... the usual precautions. Remote areas have spotty cell-phone service so tell somebody where you intend to hike and what time to expect your return. If you encounter Jahoadi or Splashette along the way ... either hide behind a bush or run for it. If you run for it you will probably be bitten by a snake but, you know, one should sensibly take the least risk. I will most likely hang around the MTRP in the Escondido area, as that is where my tick magnet's family lives. Looking forward to it. Anyway, If you are looking for caches in the hills I recommend Black Mountain in Penasquitos/Rancho Bernardo area. There are a few slopes/trails that are steep but it is generally ok. I just did a 30 found caches in one day in there last Friday. There are a good variety of small to Huge sized ones. Don't miss the biggest I've seen so far which is "Tom & Jerry's Locker". I had a really great time there and the caching was a lot of fun too. I only cached for one day, and the Daily Ranch was very close to where we were staying. I had a great 5 mile hike and found five caches. It was amazing how quiet it was out there, and after I got further from the parking area the less people I saw. Truly a great day.
