Urban exploration+geocaching?

Hi... New to the sport. Great fun. My friends and I are into urban exploration (exploring underground storm drains/tunnels/sewers and abandoned factories/hospitals/buildings). Wondering if it would be kosher to leave items for geocaching in some of these places (ie in the depths of a nice big storm drain under the streets of Melbourne)? Seeing as many of these places are sensitive to trespass /private property etc. or if so would you not want said items labelled/affiliated with written website addresses linking to this site?

Mods pls move if not relevant to forum

OH gosh. Yes, we're definitely not underground such as the urban exploration crowd. This is not to say there are not storm drain caches, abandoned train tunnel caches, etc... Some of these are very popular, and usually garner many favorite points. Now if you're talking about abandoned factories and wharehouses and that sort of thing, I think the Geocache reviewers are much more sensitive to tresspassing issues there. Just my opinion though, this should be an interesting discussion.

Hi SchmooO,

You're not totally off base here with your request. There are some caches placed in abandoned structures. See here:

Forum post on geocaching at abandoned structures

Also, we even have an abandoned stucture attribute that can be assigned to a cache. If you're a premium member, you can even search for caches with this attribute.

And, under the right conditions, you can even have caches hidden in underground in caves and drains if they're done correctly. See here for one example that I recently found in a series in a city drain.

medoug.

There are already a couple of listing sites (1 in the UK, and 1 in the USA that I know of) specialising in urbex/not-quite-legal/extreme cache hides. Give it a little time and I'm sure you'll get an invite :)

I just hid a cache about 150-200' down an underground storm drain tunnel, with a reflector trail.

Over the past five years, I have found a few cave caches and a couple dozen bunker caches, including one multicache that had its final over a half a mile into an old German tunnel system.

Subterranean caches may be the exception and not the rule, but they are quite definitely around. And they've been some of my favorites. A few have been archived over the years because they interfere with bat habitats, but as long as they're done right they can be great.

I'm not so sure about this "secret" caching/urbex society. I'm a member of an urbex community and I've never heard about any related caching being done.

I know there's a few other geocaching sites which don't always play by the "rules" and don't have designated reviewers which could result in some caches placed in restricted areas; but, as far as I know, they are not specifically geared toward urban exploration.

If such a society did exist, I'm pretty sure the caches would be widely scattered thoughout the US or only be concentrated in a smaller pockets with several active members. To really make caches work, you need to have people hiding caches and people looking for caches in the same general area. I don't think there's enough interest in combining these 2 activities to support such a site.

LOL

It's not a "society". It's a listing site, just like Groundspeak (although much smaller, and closed).

It lists caches that wouldn't necessarily be allowed here - as well as cross listing caches found here and on other listing sites.

I can't believe you've never come across any urbex/caching crossover.... ;)
