"Special Places" and Logging vs. Posting

My husband and I both have places that we have been going to since we were kids. These are usually local out of the way places that few people know about. I have thought about putting geocaches and waymarks at these points, but my husband is very resistant to the idea. I am not sure how I feel about it. Part of me (probably the geocacher and waymarker) wants to share the spot with others. The other part of me wants to keep it a local place. Any comments?

 

I also was wondering if anyone else feels like I do in the fact that I would rather post new places than log familiar ones. I looked that the waymarks that are close to me and they are all places that I pass every day. For some reason, that feels kinda like cheating to me. On the other hand, I am really enjoying adding new places for others to find. I think that if I go to an area where I am not as familiar, I would probably log some of the places. Or, maybe if I was really bored and looking for something to do I might do the local ones, I still think that I would probably do it rather hesitantly. Again...does anyone else feel like this?

Sharing the world around you is what Waymarking is about. There is enjoyment to be gained by knowing that by sharing a location so others can it enjoy it also, whether they visit the location physically or just by viewing your well constructed Waymark online. Sharing a location as a waymark may not get visited as much physically as a cache would but will probably get viewed more online. Sharing a location via a cache can be a bit more intrusive if the cache is well hidden as people have to look hard for it.

 

You will find many of more active waymarkers share your sentiments on the desire to post new waymarks rather than visiting existing ones. As now most of my Waymarking is done while I am traveling I usually go to places I want to see just because they are places that I want to see rather than to just visit a waymark. Then I post new waymarks for the places I went to and if there happens to an existing waymark I will post a visit to it. I will typically scan the existing waymarks to see if there are places I missed that I might want to see and add them to my itinerary. If there just happens to be a waymark at a location that I would not normally stop I probably won't stop just to visit a waymark.

 

Being somewhat a "specialist" on the National Register of Historic Places category, I may skip a town if all the sites on the Register are already waymarked if there is another town nearby that has not been waymarked.

I do like visits. But I prefer posting.

 

I never thought about posting my favorite private out of the way locations as waymarks, simply because there is no category for them.

 

There are categories that have to be considered. This changes the whole approach to Waymarking. Some great locations will not fit anywhere. Another great location has already been cross-posted to twelve different categories, but you might find two more. A third location is not so great but the category is really rare.

Thank-you for the responses You are right, that I am thinking about it more as a geocache and less as a waymark. I have looked at some of the places in my area and there are some that I have never heard of, so I probably would go out to those because they are places that we would enjoy going, not for being able to log the visit. I also agree that I would probably not go to somewhere (unless it was on the way to somewhere else) that isn't somewhere I wouldn't normally visit.

 

I never thought about what category they would go into. Most of the places are along larger stream/river systems or part of conservation land, so I just figured that there would be a category for those, since there are so many.

 

I don't really know Waymarking etiquette yet, so I have one more question..Is there a limit to the number of waymarks that I can have in a town? I know that there isn't one in the rules, but if I went through and "waymarked" my town, would others be upset? There doesn't seem to be a lot of Waymarkers in my area (there are only a handful of Waymarks) so I don't know what to do

It depends - as always - on the categories. Each category has its own rules. Almost all do not have any restriction at all. There are a few that limit waymarks by the same poster within a certain area, but they are exceptions. I think there is a limit for Lego Sculptures within a park and one of the headstone categories has a limitation within a given cemetery and the Philatelic and the Numismatic Photographs do not allow more than one waymark by the same poster for the same location. I have not checked this so I may be wrong in the details, but they are very rare exceptions anyway.

 

On the other hand there is no limit for the number of waymarks for the exact same location. Popular examples are the Space Needle in Seattle or the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Both have over 60 waymarks or so.

Got it This seems that I am over thinking this and making much more harder than it actually is . I can just think of 100's of places in my area that are deserving of a waymark. This isn't even counting the survey stones and markers that I have no clue what they are, but I posted on yesterday because I took a picture of it while I was placing a cache and logged the coordinates so that I could find out what it was, turned out to be a survey stone (found that out thanks to this site.) See, I learned something But there is so much history and interesting places just outside of my door that I would love to share with people. I have already started to log some of the ones that I have visited more recently and have the information for them that is needed.

 

It truly amazes me how many categories there are. Took me forever to find the survey stone one But, I am sure that I will figure it all out (probably with help from the forums

Don't worry about posting too many waymarks in your town or area. For example do a search on Gettysburg, PA, St Louis, MO, or Pragae CZ and there other locations also with high density and there are many more Waymarks that can be added. You are in a great area for Waymarking, lots of history and lots natural features.

I've recently discovered Waymarking, and there has been a very active waymarker in my area for many years. So a ton of places are already waymarked. This doesn't bother me, because I can always log visits and then I don't have to go through the whole GPS thing, which I find to be a bit time-consuming; I can focus on taking photos instead, which is the part that I enjoy the most. Different strokes for different folks, of course, and I know lots of people come to Waymarking from geocaching, but for me, it's a way to get myself out the door and practice my photography.

I agree with that! I love to take pictures and I have been so many places locally. I think that it is the best of both worlds. I especially like finding new places while geocaching and then doing the waymarks for the area
