Intro to GPS Coordinates for Elementary Students

Any suggestions for explaining waypoint coordinates to elementary students? The few sites that explain coordinates are not going to make sense to fourth-graders. They'll get the long/lat coordinates, but what about the minutes and seconds? Since I don't really understand these myself, I am really at a loss! Any information is appreciated.

If we lived in a world where all systems were decimal based it would probably be a lot easier... However...

Degrees, Minutes and Seconds are an odd system to get used to because they are based in time.

Here is about the best answer I have found..

I explained the degrees minutes and seconds to my son this way:

Using a globe I pointed out the Latitude and Longitude lines and that explained the degrees part. It took a little explaining but using a pealed orange to show a ball is divided up helped a lot. The rest is just a vinear scale making smaller divisions like centimeters and millimeters on a meter stick.

I hope this helps
