'Restricted' height or elevation?

Hello all,

 

Been benchmarking for a couple of years now, and my first time here. I plan on hunting for some marks in Connecticut in the near future, and I noticed a lot of marks in CT that have been monumented, but are not publishable because they have 'restricted' heights or positions. I am no surveyor by any means, so can anyone here explain what the NGS means by 'restricted'? Thanks for any help

I would assume it cannot be made public by NGS.

 

Maybe the state does not want it published for whatever reason, its thier money that was used or it was contracted out and there is some legal reason it cannot be made available, courts, private claims. Maybe some kind of agreement or dispute to the information, political?

I recall reading something saying that there are marks at/near military installations that were classified and have never been declassified. Don't know if that's what you're seeing, but it seems to be a possibility.

I considered the military possibility almost immediately, but these marks were set in random areas such as alongside highways and in residential neighborhoods, and nowhere near any installations AFAIK.

 

The marks that I questioned are all CTDT survey disks that were set in the early 1980s. Since they were bluebooked with NGS, there are datasheets available, displaying all the usual information right down to an exceptionally detailed to-reach description, then finally the reason why the sheet is unpublishable.

 

I think Z15 has it right that the state of Connecticut set these marks for CTDoT business exclusively, in spite of the NGS bluebooking. Perhaps the bluebooking is merely certifying the quality of the monuments

 

I might go out and find some of them anyway, just to embrace the challenge. The only downside is that I can't log them on Groundspeak. Of course, there are also plenty of NGS marks out there that I can log!
