GeoWoodStock XI Prediction

Recommended Posts

We got 12 more days to find out where GeoWoodstock XI is going to be hosted. So let have fun predicting of where the new location for the year of 2013 is going to be at.

I been thinking NV.

Anyone else?

Well about the only place in NV would be Las Vegas and that would be a major pass. How about Orlando Florida? Or San Diego California? Of course the idea venue would be Boring, Oregon.

Geocoinfest, the other main traveling Mega in the US, will be in Denver this fall and Las Vegas next year. So I hope they don't put Woodstock in the SW as well. Maybe midwest or Texas? I would not protest Florida though.

I'll make a side prediction, that if this year's GeoWedding during the GWX festivities is well received, that it will become a regular sideline occurence much the same as weddings are at Renaissance Festivals.

Hmmm, maybe I can become a going concern by selling myself as Best Man for anyone that wants me for the price of a flight and a hotel room.... It's not far fetched. A rusty can of beans has flown Team 360 to Europe a few times. :anibad:

Yeah, let's be having a Snoogan's Chapel O' icon12.gif Loveicon12.gif at each and every GW.

Just keep Hollywood out. They're wrecking Comic-Con (always wanted to go to one, but now it's all Movies, Games, TV, etc. no room for comics or comic fans.)

I'd like to see Colorado, Utah or Arizona.

Hamburg Germany

As much as I'd like to see the event go across the pond at some point, from what I hear they have quite an active mega event schedule.

I'd love to see it in Canada before it heads over there if it ever does. Lots of folks from Canada flock to GW.

Would GW even have the same feel in a non-English speaking country? How many folks would follow it across the pond?

I'll make another sideline prediction. When GW increases to a 15K plus (attendance) event, and possibly as low as 12K, it's gonna move indoors to a convention center setting, due to logistics and weather considerations for a crowd of that size. This will swing the door of possibilities wide when it comes to bid proposals.

And if it ever does go there, I'll make a bid to have it in the George R. Brown convention center in Houston. (If I can get some other crazy cachers to do most of the work.) Seriously though, a paid event planner will need to go into the money factoring. At some point an all volunteer effort isn't going to fly.

It would be a blast where-ever it was. I've studied French, German and Spanish, so I could muddle through most Euro countries, though I might have a spot of trouble in Yorkshire.

Ahhh. Manchester fan ay? :anibad::laughing:

Nah, we were visited by three men from Yorkshire at our local pub, I could only make out about 1 word in 4.

And since you asked, I'm arsenal.png

They fare better in even numbers.

And to get back on topic, a GW in Great Britain or Ireland would be pretty sweet.

I don't think UK cachers are spare of Mega event opportunities. I'd *love* to get over there during the Summer months and mooch around a few events and find a lot of caches. Hoping to work something next year. It'll be a wonderful thing to have the car paid off and able to channel that money into other means of running amok.

The pending and past are roughly 2 Ohios apart. I'm hoping the next will be a bit further afield (although I'd love for there to be one in Michigan, let's leave that thought for a couple of years, at least, to be fair to the rest of the country.) Still crossing fingers for a western setting.

South Lake Tahoe would be pretty dern cool too. Or North Lake for that matter, but think about it. Forests, high elevation mountains, a gorgeous lake, and casinos galore

You know what a shameless self promoter I am... I would be telling everyone to head 2.5 hours South on 395 to do my caches. Those are the ones I'm most proud of and get the best feedback. Even glowing DNFs.

Monkeybrad and the rest of Team STFU took a long detour on the way to GW6 and actually got FTF on one of my caches on Mono Lake. One of my favorite geocaching memories is when Southpaw told me how much he enjoyed that adventure. He looked like a little kid. He was so happy to get tell me in person. :)

How is weather there for Memorial Day weekend? When we had it in July for Geowoodstock in Washington and Pennsylvania, there was a number of people complaining that Geowoodstock isnt around Memorial Day.

Here is the list of all the past Geowoodstock events.

Might be snowy, might be sunny. Right now, there's barely snow on the mountain tops, and the first snow I actually say was at about 7000 feet. Next year, they might be burried on Memorial day weekend. Last year they got snow in June.

I've gone to a firework convention in Lake Havasu City. They have park down there with great area to set up GeoWoodstock. ATV tracks, trails, the lake itself.SARA Park

Access to LHC is great from other sections of Arizona, California, Nevada Utah. If not this time maybe another time.

I don't think there is a single day of the year on record where it hasn't snowed somewhere in the Sierras... At least above 7,000 feet. I have experienced snow in every month of the year in Mammoth, then again, a good ski season there is 300+ days.

Nice thought but don't think there is enough room for thousands of cachers on top of visitors already visiting. Maybe on the Nevada side by Boomtown or Carson City.

I can personally attest the accommodations here would definitely not be AAA listed. Do they have a lump of coal rating? Suck just does not cover it.

During a busy weekend in the winter Squaw Valley can typically get 8000 skiers per day. If you added the number of skiers at Alpine Meadows, Northstar, Homewood, Boreal Ridge, and even Sugar Bowl there could easily be 30,000 visitors in the North Tahoe area that are not locals. There are a *lot* of accommodations available in the area that are mostly empty during the "off season". I'm going to be in Squaw Valley in July staying at a resort hotel that normally costs over $300 a night but is only costing $122 per night to lure in more people to stay that time of year.

Once I close on this Taho property that I'm interested in we'll have the registration event at my place. :anibad:

Simply can not beat the hospitality at this location

Please, not Sedona. It's a tourist trap.

There's a nice canyon with a large part north of there, Oak Canyon(?) which would be pretty good, but may not have the capacity for a Mega.

I agree, sedona sucks. The area around it is nice though, including oak canyon. There are some wonderful waterfront parks in Florida that would make great settings for megas. One is in Sebastian. I saw Arlo Guthrie there with about 10000 of my closest friends so I'm sure it would be big enough. Stephen foster state park, in north Florida is home to the Florida folk festival every year (about 20000/day) that would be a fun spot too.

What about twin cities area? Oh yes, over east of there in wis. :)

knowschad, u know anything?

If they are having it in that area, I am going. I got a few personal friend over there. One is a cacher now, not sure if I got her hooked or what! I knew her for close to 10 years now and when I found out she's a cacher too, my jaw just about hit the floor.

I swung through Sedona on the way to Meteor Crater, on a day trip out of GCNP. I was greatly dismayed by all the development in what would have otherwise been a beautiful setting. Couldn't help notice the post cards they still sell are based upon photos taken before houses were built everywhere.

As a caution - if you don't protect beautiful parklands from developers you end up with things like Sedona. Outside the town is still pretty nice, but way outside of town.

What it's ultimately going to take is a strong base of geocachers to throw their energy behind hosting the event -- and there's the very real risk they could end up losing money on the whole if not very, very careful.

Can I change my vote for Boulder to Cache Valley, Utah? It's a beautiful location, not far from Wyoming and Idaho for those that want to add a couple of other states to their stats, there are a few power trails nearby for those that into that sort of thing, and it's only an hour and a half or so from a major airport. Seems like it's got a lot going for it in addition to be called Cache Valley.

I'd like to see GW come back to California, but I'm not hosting it again. That was a lot of work

However if someone else wants to host, I'll be happy to give advise.

Maybe in Redding, Ca. :anibad:

I'd love to see it someplace on the Pacific coast. Santa Cruz maybe.... Really, anywhere on the Pacific coast would make me happy.

However, the town of Mammoth Lakes is nearly broke from a nearly snowless winter. They could use the business and ya gotta admit that the scenery is awesome and they have enough rooms to handle 5 GW events at the same time. :anibad:

Coos Bay is one place that can host. They got a very strong group of cachers that can host.

I have nothing against Santa Cruz (I used to live with 20 minutes or so from it) but if it's going to be there for GW XI, then GW XII should be someplace like Bar Harbor, ME so that west coaster would have to travel as far as east coasters would to Santa Cruz.

Mammoth Lakes would be a good spot but it's not real accessible. I know there's a small airport there (I once flew there with a co-worker that is a private pilot from San Jose) but it's 3.5 hours from the nearest major airport (Reno). On the other hand, the drive from Reno to Mammoth is pretty nice.
