How many visits do your EarthCaches get?

My latest EarthCache has just been published featuring one of the black sand beaches in Hawaii. Since this is a popular vacation spot, I'm thinking I might be getting lots of emails for this one. I'm curious to know which EarthCaches are visited the most often.

My most visited EarthCaches are:

Wakatipu to the Core in Queenstown, New Zealand - 329 visits since 02/05/2010 (avg 12.2 visits/month)

Burgess Shale in Yoho National Park, Canada - 212 visits since 10/03/2007 (avg 3.9 visits/month)

- Note: this one is snowed under for several months of the year and inaccessible during the winter

We have a couple of ECs on not very popular places:

Two in Qatar which mostly get visited when Qatar's most active cacher is driving people around (thanks Cincol!)

Two on Sri Lanka. One hardly ever gets visited as it's quite far away from the usual tourist routes. The other one gets a fair amount of logs. Unfortunately, most cacher don't read the description and hope that their log stands without sending in any answers. :(

One in Norway -most visits with 36- which we should really get translated as it's got not many visitors either, and only in summer.

Oh, and there's the one on Gran Canaria, the island where some ECs get several logs each day. It's far away from the tourist resorts and it's not easy. I guess that keeps most people from visiting it. We're thinking about adding a German translation though. Maybe that location will get a bit more well deserved attention (if anyone of you will spend the summer holiday there: it's a fascinating place, sedimentary deposits on an otherwise volcanic island! ).

Good luck with dealing with your visitors!

I hope it is ok as well to provide links to ECs owned by others - in any case this might answer your question raised above.

Here are three frequently visited one from Europe that came up my mind when reading your question

http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=d3c8369a-cb38-44f3-9970-08d71220e791 (Cologne, almost 4500 visits)

http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=239dca05-4848-4db9-8dc1-849c4a0bde8b (Vienna, almost 2500 visits)

http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=bbda0034-efda-4513-afc4-c70f69b6a96f (Prague, almost 2250 visits)

The most frequently visited Italian EC appears to be that one in Venice

http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=0707fede-00e8-4dbd-9487-95e2bc956c28

with roughly 1300 visits.

Wow! And I thought the one's I put out in the National Parks were visited frequently.

Yep - major tourist attractions certainly get the major finds.

I have 2 of the 4 above :)

My Earth cache in Dubai at the Burj Khalifa certainly gets the most visits of all of mine - and here in South Africa - Table Mountain, the southernmost tip of Africa and the Kruger National Park (safari park) all get the most visits/logs - but are certainly not necessarily the best EC's of mine or in SA.

That's only one aspect. The fountain in Vienna to which the EC cited above is dedicated is not a major tourist attraction, but the EC has been the first one in Vienna and still one of only a few.

Cities like Vienna and Prague do have an extremely active local geocaching scene - tourists add to the numbers, but the local scene does play a considerable role as well.

I don't dounbt the local caching population - but having an Earthcache in the centre of a "tourist" city like Vienna makes a huge difference. It is the reason I found that particular cache - it is right near the central train station and on the way to the nearby park and parilment and lippizaners etc.

There are lots of people who come to the centre of Vienna - both Vienese and tourists (local German/Austrian and international). There is another Earthcache close by (Danube Insel) which is a similar age and only has less than 800 finds (still very impressive) - but I am sure the centre of Vienna just gets more people passing through.

I agree, I just wanted to point out that the Lapis lazuli fountain is not a tourist attraction itself. The Cologne cathedral, however, is certainly a tourist attraction and also indeed worth to be visited in its own right.

With local cachers I not only meant cachers from Vienna. I do not count cachers that visit Vienna a few times a year for professional reaaons or simply for geocaching as tourists. There are many Austrian cachers from different provinces than Vienna that used ther Lapis Lazuli cache to more quickly attain EC finds in different states/provinces for the EC master program (e.g. Vienna and Lower Austria count as two states in the same way as California and New Jersey).

800 visits is not impressive in terms of the Viennese situation. That's peanuts.

The real tourist factor can be seen here (but that's not an EC)

I just noticed one of our ECs is now at the end of a powertrail <_< It might bring more visitors to that place, on the other hand I'm not too keen on powertrails. Mixed feelings here.

Mrs. terratin

There’s a good chance that most folks doing the power trail will stop by your EC. I am familiar w/your feelings on power trails. After trying a few I found them rather enjoyable. In general they are developing more creative containers and D/T’s. As a devotee of the “shoe leather express”, rather than biking, I find the power trails an enjoyable way of walking many of the rails to trail out our way. Through power trails I’ve found R to T’s I never knew existed. Those that have ECs along the way are usually incorporated into most of the cachers journey. There not just for “number hounds” any more. Give em try…

Actually the Norwegian PT does not look like one perfectly suited for hiking (they all seem to be 1.5/1.5 micros along a road). It rather looks like a trail for the "car express".

I would be annoyed if I had a cache in that area regardless of whether EC or not.

Sorry to hear that… I’m becoming more and more impressed w/the Rails-To-Trails System in this country and how geocaching has brought more traffic on these trails.

As of our last look at the data (a few months ago), this was the EarthCache with the most logged visits:

GCZ8H7 - The Cologne Cathedral - A Geological Point of View

One way to see some of the most visited ECs is to do an "Advanced Search" through www.geocaching.com, use EarthCache as the type, and earth or cache as a keyword (to get as many possible), then sort on "Favorites". It doesn't capture all EarthCaches, and favorites are only somewhat correlated to the highest visit totals, but that's one way to see some EarthCaches with high traffic. I suppose one could do this while looking by Country/State too.
