Wherigo on windows phone

Recommended Posts

Is it possible to run Wherigo cartridges on Windows Phone running 7.5. I do not see an app in the MarketPlace.

Apparently not, unless you can find a way to use J2ME apps on it. That's one of the few smartphone platforms Wherigo isn't available on.

What a shame all the new Wherigo caches and I ( and other cachers using windows phones) can't go anywhere until an APP gets created. Someone help please!

Hey guys, I'm working on a port of the great open-source openwig library to .NET, as well as on a Wherigo client for Windows Phone 7.5 (and 8).

:)

Great thing. Nice to hear. Thumbs up

I've been very interested in seeing a .Net-based Wherigo Player (in C#, I hope) to tinker with. When you're done, I'd love to play around with the code and attempt to add some of the items from my Wherigo v2 list and even the inter-game system.

One thing, though. Please feel free to take some artistic license with the UI. By all means, make it look pretty! The Wherigo Player sorely needs this.

Thanks all :)

I must mention that I'm not the only one working on this, geocacher fellow charlenni has started his own .NET port before me.

Ranger Fox, you bet! As an interaction designer, I care more than anything about fun, aesthetics and usability. I want it to be cool. :)

Edit: Yes, it's in C#, for sure.

Let me know if you need an extra coding hand! I have a background in Usability and UX, and although not an expert in WP development, I did code a newsreader app when WP7 was launched and know C# since its beggining. :)

So, latest updates.

I've been researching for a while now, and there is no way a Lua virtual machine can run on Windows Phone OS 7.1, because the platform lacks support for native code (meaning no lua.dll import) and it lacks support for critical dynamic code emitting which all the current Lua implementations on .NET are using in order to support metatables (namely).

There is one last direction I am looking to in order to make Lua work on WP7, I'll keep you all posted.

Hey guys, great news.

I have a working Wherigo engine for Windows phone 7 and more. Charlenni and me worked hard to create a platform independent Wherigo lib.

Now my focus is on creating this first wp7 player.

Feature requests are welcome ;).

Great news! Any Update on the progress? Will the player be WP8 compatible? I would be love to beta test when it gets to that point. PM me if you are interested.

I really hope this comes to fruition - I too have a Windows phone, and it's really frustrating not being able to do Wherigos. All because I refuse to use any mobile that isn't a Nokia!

I'm needing to get a new phone now and have got it down to 2 models. The one that ticks all of the boxes for me is Nokia Lumia 520 Windows Phone 8 with the exception of being able to do Wherigo caches. The other option is an android that I know WhereYouGo works on but the phone itself doesnt tick all the boxes. Any ideas as to how long before Wherigo will be available on Windows 8?

Cheers

Diane

I'm not the right person to answer this question, but I do know this is in development. You might be able to play around with something in two to three months, but you probably won't be playing any cartridges for real until the end of the year. All this is wrapped up in my timeline for Wherigo v1.1. You'll hear more towards the end of August, unless Groundspeak is convincing enough to delay my announcement.

Good to see there may be some progress. I was a bit surprised when I searched, came across the thread, and realized I started it. Shows how often I think about Wherigo, but I did run across one today that interested me. In general, if you want to know what it feels like to be a second class citizen, buy a Windows Phone.

Hey guys, thanks for the interest.

The player will support Windows Phone OS 7.1 and later.

So, yes, Windows Phone 8 will be supported.

The developement is not super fast since I'm juggling with many projects aside.

Maybe we'll go for a "release early release often" policy, rather than taking years to create the perfect app? I don't know.

Anyway the work right now is about fleshing the app itself out, designing and implementing its views and flow.

Stay tuned :)

Wait until the Project Foundation announcement.

Greets, can you give an approximate timeline for the announcement? It is almost 5 months since your post.

Cheers

Go to this topic. This is the Windows Phone version of the Wherigo Player we'll be working on for the Wherigo Foundation. We first have to get the new player to support Wherigo v1.0 before we begin with v1.1, which will be integration with the new site's Wherigo API, which will let you do a ton of really convenient things directly from your phone or even a compliant Wherigo Builder application. Downloading a cartridge directly to your phone is just the tip of this gigantic iceberg.
