tyl3n0l
Hey I just got a brand new dakota 20 and was wondering if someone would point me in the right direction of some maps that would be more helpful than the base maps that come with it. I live in eastern Virginia.... Thanks! Quote Link to comment
+phlatlander
Here is a link to an excellent map source. Be patient to learn how to select the map tiles you want and you can download a .img file that will work in your Garmin. I have an Oregon 550 and the micro sd card contains at least 8 maps (Canada, continental USA, Mexico, Barbados, England, etc) http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ Quote Link to comment

seldom_sn
Garmin compatible custom maps Most of those maps aren't routable, like the ones from garmin.openstreetmap.nl, but they will have contours and probably higher quality rendering of water features. Quote Link to comment
+user13371
Tyl3n0l, you've already gotten the best recommendations you're gonna get, for a variety of uses. What kind of maps are you most interested in? Quote Link to comment

Route-ability was not a criteria in the original post. Quote Link to comment
seldom_sn
Route-ability was not a criteria in the original post. Routability was not mentioned either way in the OP, and the OP may not know the difference. But if you follow any BaseCamp forums you'll see lots of questions about why won't my (non-routable) map route? I thought the distinction between Phlatlander's link and yours was worth pointing out. If the OP wants a routable topo map of VA, he'll probably want one of the Garmin 24k series. Edited April 22, 2012 by seldom_sn Quote Link to comment
