Geocaching History in South Africa

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

A friend of mine (who recently started geocaching) has decided to do a project for school about geocaching. I'm trying to get as much information as possible about the history of Geocaching in South Africa. I've managed to get the history about Geocaching in general from the web, but would like to get more information about Geocaching history in SA. So far I've managed to get a few basic information pieces such as the oldest (first) cache in SA: Sentinal View. Anybody willing to share some more information or stories etc that can be used in the school project?

Thanks,

Tom

This will be an interesting topic to watch.

Minor point, Sentinel View is the oldest *active* cache in SA. The oldest cache is GCZA01 http://coord.info/GC163 FTF (and only to find) was Jors.

As a relative newcomer to the game, I will let others better suited fill you in on some of the details.

There are lots of resources online, animations of caches appearing over time - check out the 10 year event's logs for some stories. http://coord.info/GC2JKAX - also the statistics thread is a good place to look.

I have a video at home where Discombob was interviewed on some TV show Top Billing I think it was.

If I can find it, I can upload it somewhere. Gives a little bit of insight into the (early days) of caching in Cape Town.
