DannyCaffeine Posted April 16, 2012 Posted April 16, 2012 Okay so here is what happened. I went to a cache site and on my way to the GZ I saw a page of a porno mag stuck to a tree with a rusty knife. If that isn't creepy enough there were slash marks in certain places on the picture. (not going into detail here). There is obvious evidence of someone living near the cache and that they were there recently. I posted on the cache page that I had found the cache and that it was in bad shape. I also posted about the adult materal I found there and they just encrypted my post. I really don't feel that there is anything right about this area and I am not quite sure what should be done because the cache has been there for so long I don't want to feel guilty that I was the reason it got archived. Here is the link to the cache if anyone wants to see my comments. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=9e24e6a0-d390-4f20-90cb-95dff4d82ab3 Quote
+thewingfamily Posted April 16, 2012 Posted April 16, 2012 Honestly...I would find that creepy too. But, it seems that the CO is aware of the area and what is there, I think that is why he encrypted your posting. It does give away some points near it, so it is a spoiler. Having said that though, people will probably decrypt it (I usually do, just to be safe) and make their choice whether to go or not. JMHO thewingfamily. Quote
DannyCaffeine Posted April 16, 2012 Author Posted April 16, 2012 (edited) It was a good ways away from the cache (like 30 feet or so) and the CO gave a pretty good spoiler with the hint. Edited April 16, 2012 by DannyCaffeine Quote

I agree with you that it is something that should be known...believe me, I know exactly what you are talking about when you are saying that you are concerned. But, it is really not up to us to make the decisions about whether to take the cache down, it is up to the CO, but since you are putting it out there that this is there, you are warning people (which is all you can do) and allowing them to make their own choice as to whether or not to go. thewingfamily. +Max and 99 Posted April 16, 2012 Posted April 16, 2012 I think you did the right thing by posting what you knew about the site. I'd leave it at that. Not much else you can do considering the CO encrypted your log and Groundspeak will support that decision. I personally really appreciate it when cachers like you inform me of situations like you described. Quote

The adult material sounds out of place based on my experience in the area. I live and work within a couple of miles of the cache and shop at the nearby box store at least weekly. The area is a tiny hill in the middle of an urban retail and commercial district. No finders have ever reported any issues when hunting the cache other than the homeless guy camp and some trash. I found it about seven years ago when it was about fours years old. The original name - "Ant Hill Cache" - was better. I don't think anything needs to be done about this cache. Let it continue to exist and put your perceptions aside. A cache that has been logged as found 450+ times in 11 years doesn't need intervention. Quote

Places change over time. The poster above seems to know the area so maybe not with this one. But it is always a good idea to post a concern I think. Quote

+JesandTodd Posted April 16, 2012 Posted April 16, 2012 As a solo caching type of girl, I'd want to know about creepy homless guy and his scary knife-y porno situation. The CO shouldnt' have encrypted your log. Luckily, the CO renamed the cache. Any cache with 'homeless' in the title goes on the ignore list. Quote

If I am heading out, I always read all of the logs, just incase, so I know things that people have ran into. If there are things (like this one) that are there, or even just the threat of animals, I will either not do the cache alone or will avoid it altogether. I really do think that he did the right thing by writing what he did and hope that people will look at it and decide if they want to do it or not. thewingfamily Quote
