What is this new forum feature?

and why? There is now a "report this post" icon in the forums. Is that for us to run to TPTB each time someone uses a dirty word, or in the instance of the recently locked thread where a link was posted to a hacker's site and the thread was locked for being off topic? It just seems like something that might become abused. Or are we supposed to report flame wars so someone can get a fire extinguisher on it?

Now we can type things such as *****, ****, n*******e.com, and **** and it's ok as long as someone isn't offended.

Well, i just tried, and things with the "N" word still get "cached" for review.

I was wondering about that myself. As long as the censor is still in place, I don't see any reason for people to get pissy about cursing. Although, I suppose the automagic censor won't catch every word that might offend someone.

But overall, I can't see any reason that I'd ever "report a post" due to content - other than in situations where it is obvious the poster is a troll, and using extremely negative posting methods to try to stir up trouble.

Like, if I came in here and started a whole new thread just to tell umc what a cheap, lying, no-good, rotten, four-flushing, low-life, snake-licking, dirt-eating, inbred, overstuffed, ignorant, blood-sucking, dog-kissing, brainless, ****less, hopeless, heartless, fat-***ed, bug-eyed, stiff-legged, spineless, worm-headed sack of monkey **** he is... I'd expect that post to be reported rather quickly. icon_wink.gif

But yeah - I can't believe J & TPTB would want this feature, as I'm assuming they already have plenty of e-mail to deal with. We've already got people out there policing our caches, so I guess it only makes sense that the politeness police make their way into the forums here. icon_rolleyes.gif

I think in all of my posts, probably only a few of them might have ever been offensive and/or annoying enough for someone to go crying to Jeremy about. I'm a pretty good boy. I hope people don't abuse the feature though... perhaps J & TPTB can post some general guidelines for when it should or shouldn't be used. I mean, should we report every "test" thread that starts? icon_smile.gif

Ahh, and here we were thinking this was some type of proactive measure... when it was just something that "happened" with an upgrade, evidently. I hope it doesn't lead to much hassle for y'alls. icon_smile.gif

Jeremy's right. There was a forum upgrade performed last night which added a few new features, but mostly it was a complete UI redesign. I haven't turned on the new UI for these forums as I haven't completed my testing of them yet and the changes are significant. If you're curious, feel free to check out the new UI on Infopop's preview site.

The "Report This Post" icon is a new feature to allow users to flag a particular topic for review. Its intended use is to let moderators know that there's some objectionable material in a post, like porn, spam, or abuse toward another user.

You're right. I'm actually petrified about the potential abuse of this feature, but its new and the community might find it helpful. So I'll wait and see how the community responds to it before considering restricting its use.

That's the smartest approach, IMHO. icon_smile.gif
